pangy Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 Begovic would top any list of keepers that are obtainable to us
Saint Charlie Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 Begovic would top any list of keepers that are obtainable to us He isn't going to leave Stoke for Saints. He will go to a CL team, and IMO is unobtainable for us.
St Chalet Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 Boruc is more than adequate as a number one and he would maintain some much needed continuity to our team. Agree we should sign someone like Alex McCarthy to give him some backup / competition.
pangy Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 He isn't going to leave Stoke for Saints. He will go to a CL team, and IMO is unobtainable for us. So why hasn't he gone then ? if a CL club wanted him then they would of snapped him up by now,Stoke are no different to us or maybe they have more ambition ?
thefuriousb Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 So why hasn't he gone then ? if a CL club wanted him then they would of snapped him up by now,Stoke are no different to us or maybe they have more ambition ? I heard a rumour during the world cup that Real Madrid had mih on their list of potential targets. After Casillas' performances in the world cup this may be hastened (and is not like Real had him as clear number one for the last 2 years)
melmacian_saint Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 So why hasn't he gone then ? if a CL club wanted him then they would of snapped him up by now,Stoke are no different to us or maybe they have more ambition ? Exactly the point.
skintsaint Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 Boruc is a far better keeper than either Marshall or Forster, and I hope we don't waste 8m on a keeper. Would rather we stick the cash on an outfield player as its more important at the moment.
charliemiller Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 Maybe its just my suspicious mind but Boruc says positive thins about reporting back for training and the very next day the daily mail prints we are buyin this keeper and that keeper ....maybe to try **** Boruc off ??
Lighthouse Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 We definitely need a 'keeper. If, or rather when, Boruc gets injured there is nobody in our squad capable of filling in. Gazza is a long way from being a Premier League 'keeper and I wouldn't be surprised if Kelvin has unofficially retired, the way he seems to have disappeared from the squad. Gazza cost us points last season and just looks like an accident waiting to happen. If we have to make do without Boruc for a couple of months, we really are in trouble IMO.
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 Don't understand the clubs apparent obsession with British keepers when there appears to be a lot of keepers outside these shores who have the distribution which the modern game requires. I suppose having the English National Team coach may influence that but still.
Matthew Le God Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 I wouldn't be surprised if Kelvin has unofficially retired, the way he seems to have disappeared from the squad.
Lighthouse Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 I meant the way he had disappeared from the match day squad, as opposed to the training ground all together. Good to see him around but I do not regard him as Premier League quality either.
david in sweden Posted 7 July, 2014 Author Posted 7 July, 2014 whether Boruc " likes the idea " of being no.2 ..or Marshall would expect to be no.1 is immaterial .....as it's the manager who selects the side. The big problem last season was Boruc was out (on two occasions) for a total of 10 matches. In that time we used both KD and Gazzaniga who had only ONE win between them and shipped in 20 goals.....(means we lost 25 points during AB's 10 games absence). In the remaining 28 games ...Boruc let in a total of 26 goals in 29 games. Surely those stats. speak for themselves. He's the only reliable custodian we have. He is a very good keeper, but we have no competent replacement. Were he to have another serious injury, we 'd surely be in the same situation once again. All this nonsense about not wanting to play because of the competition is rubbish. Boruc may be good, but I don't believe he's fool enough to think he has a Divine Right to be no.1 for the coming year(s). Just a couple of seasons ago, Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs each had THREE international goalies on their books, and they fought it out to get the no.1 spot. We must have good cover - it's common sense.

No most teams have an out an out first choice keeper and a back up. Liverpool didn't keep reina not because he wasn't better than Jones etc but because he wouldn't have been happy sitting on the bench all season. If people believe Boruc would be happy as a reserve, that's their opinion. Personally i don't believe for a minute he would be. That's not to say we shouldn't bring in a replacement for Gazzanigga who is more capable, but more the case that we shouldn't be shopping for individuals who would expect to be first choice.

Remember those lost 25 points I quoted (in the above post). Mostly Gazzaniga's call.

I suppose having the English National Team coach may influence that but still. keepers take longer to develop, and for the past four/five years England managers have become obsessed with only one candidate...Joe Hart. Why shouldn't we see more English keepers?... and with Dave Watson on staff he'll know all the " possibles" as well as anyone.
the saint in winchester Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 So, we either 1) stand by Boruc as #1 keeper and settle for an up and coming deputy eg. McCarthy from Reading, or 2) recruit another top notch keeper to rival Boruc and tell them they are of equal status and compete for the jersey. If Boruc doesn't accept that and chooses to leave, we have to accept that. Vote now.

Even if we get someone like Marshall in and Boruc leaves as a result (very doubtful), we're where we were, with a great goalie and dodgy understudies. Thing is, keepers tend not to leave when competition is brought in - they compete. If Boruc doesn't get in the team all season then he might fancy a move next summer but right now I think he'll want to prove his worth here.
Baird of the land Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 1) up and coming deputy such as McCarthy for me all day long.
angelman Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 Right, we have Kelvin Boruc Gazza Cropper and are looking at another. That's too many. Cropper and Gazza are 21/22 respectively and seem to be occupying the same sort of position in the club, so I would have thought that one of them should be let go. As Cropper has just signed a contract, I would be surprised if it was him. Having said that Gazza is contracted until 2016 and cost a staggering £2.5m or something along those lines. Kelvin hopefully can move upstairs so to speak.
Leicestersaint Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 We need a really good keeper in addition to Boruc - whether Marshall fits the bill I am not clear.
Saint Charlie Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 Marshall isn't one of the two keepers playing in Cardiff's friendly tonight.
DuncanRG Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 Maybe its just my suspicious mind but Boruc says positive thins about reporting back for training and the very next day the daily mail prints we are buyin this keeper and that keeper ....maybe to try **** Boruc off ?? Why would the Daily Mail want to annoy Artur Boruc?
SuperSAINT Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 Marshall isn't one of the two keepers playing in Cardiff's friendly tonight. Injured? We can't be anywhere close to a deal when his thread is only on page 2
Sour Mash Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 Why would the Daily Mail want to annoy Artur Boruc? Polish immigrant taking our jobs innit.
simo Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 I meant the way he had disappeared from the match day squad, as opposed to the training ground all together. Good to see him around but I do not regard him as Premier League quality either. Think he was injured back end of the season?
SuperMikey Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 Looks like we may be a bit late to the party, but the Estudiantes keeper Geronimo Rulli has been making waves over the last 12 months and I reckon he'd be the perfect understudy for Artur. I say late to the party as it looks like Malaga are going to snap him up for a measly £3m to replace Caballero who's off to Man City for £8m. Watching the video below I think he'd learn a lot from Artur, they've got a pretty similar style of keeping...it almost seems too good to be true! Saves us spending £10m on Marshall, who is a good keeper but won't really progress too far past where he is as a player now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeAZk0EiyI4 Anyone got RoKo's mobile number so I can let him know about this chap? Cheers!

saintedwill Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 It's Forster or McCarthy for me. Boruc is still a top class goalkeeper but he needs to be pushed. Gazzaniga and Davis simply don't do that. Gazzaniga and Cropper could do with going out on loan.
CB Fry Posted 7 July, 2014 Posted 7 July, 2014 Can't really see how we can carry off having two "top class" keepers. Not enough games to justify it - would think a, say, Marshall would want to No 1 and that is going to drive Boruc out. Can only see us buying a youngish prospect with a view to them being first choice by the end of the season.
saint_ed Posted 8 July, 2014 Posted 8 July, 2014 We won't be signing Marshall, not unless Cardiff go full circle in their stance on selling him. (straight from Director level)
melmacian_saint Posted 8 July, 2014 Posted 8 July, 2014 The Costa Rican 'Keeper, Navas, has a release clause of £8m(could be €'s?) if Atletico Madrid don't go for him I think he'd be very attainable and solid. Very much agree!
Bearsy Posted 8 July, 2014 Posted 8 July, 2014 We won't be signing Marshall, not unless Cardiff go full circle in their stance on selling him. (straight from Director level) hi saint_ed! going full circle would be returning back to their original position, cardiff would need to go half circle pls. Regards, Brian

for_heaven's_Saint Posted 8 July, 2014 Posted 8 July, 2014 Thanks Bearsy, I hadn't heard that term before but it naturally makes much more sense. I see the error of my ways. It tends to be referred to as a 'U-turn'.
Tokyo-Saint Posted 8 July, 2014 Posted 8 July, 2014 True story, girl on facebook posted that her life had changed 360 degrees. I thought she must have made the same mistake as above but then thinking about it, she did start of as a bit of a slag so....
bazza Posted 8 July, 2014 Posted 8 July, 2014 Marshall would be a great buy. It would need a shed load of money to prise him away though.
the saint in winchester Posted 8 July, 2014 Posted 8 July, 2014 Mine would be number 2 but It'd be Darlow not McCarthy. Then you are mixing up the options. If replacing McCarthy then you are choosing option 1. If you want option 2, choose from Foster, Forster, Marshall, Vorm or a GK from the World Cup.
