New Keeper / David Marshall Interest

I see the Daily Mail has resurrected this story that I first read - even before the end of last season....

the Mail, it seems, has quoted that Saints have bid £8 million, about half (they say) of Cardiff's valuation of the keeper - where did they get that figure from, I wonder?

.....Certainly not tapping Les' phone, but maybe they have someone who is I.T.N...? However, this promises to become an interesting storyline for the next week or so ....one way or another.

....whatever the out come...perhaps Cardiff may recall that Paulo Gazzaniga kept a clean sheet when Saints beat Cardiff 3-0 last December...? At any rate it might be a carrot for a part-ex deal ?

Marshall is a really good keeper but I'd still rather get Forster, would probably be available at a similar price too.

I can't see us mugging them off to the extent that they would take Gazzaniga!

Assuming we are in the market for a new keeper, I am interested in posters views on potential targets.

Would a new signing start as first choice? Should we go for a younger keeper?

I hate the arrogance I see at other clubs, fans assuming players are there for the taking so I'm not assuming these will automatically be achievable;

Marshal

Forster

Foster

Vorm

Anyone else?

Marshall seems to be at a very good level, but Forster is younger, could he get better with Watson?

Great signing. Much as I love Buroc, for me we've always needed a better keeper.

Boruc as understudy to Marshall works for me.... And he has experience of a relegation dog fight..... which until we make some ambitious signings may be where we are heading. (odds reduced to 6-1, they were 14-1 at start of WC). But, with these sort of signings.... we're going to be ok. :)

Boruc will NEVER play understudy to Marshall and they have history as well

Can you see us doing business with Tan, the man is a rich maniac... He will ask for a fortune for any player he wants to keep, and even if we offered it he still might not take it.

(Wonders what would have happened had we still had cortese in charge)

Long story short, I can't see people buying Cardiff's key players unless it is for stupid money. Ironic that its harder to get players out of a championship team who just got relegated than a premier league team on the up who are rich and just had their best ever premier league season.

Replacing Boruc should be the least of our priorities... Striker, Left Back, Potentially Centre Back, Attacking midfielder all more important at this stage.

Its possible to have more than one transfer on the go at a time. The Pelle and Tadic deals are also in motion, others maybe as well that we don't know about yet.

I'd say goalkeeper competition is required, we look extremely vulnerable whenever Boruc is injured, Gazzaniga and K.Davis aren't making him fight for his place as the arrival of Marshall or Forster would.

I suspect it will be easier to buy Forster from Celtic than Marshall from Cardiff.

Very true. Davis and Gazzaniga arent really good enough at this level (still holding out a bit of hope for Gazza after maybe a lower league loan) - I would just think somebody as an understudy rather than spending a massive amount on a keeper would be a better plan at this stage.

Would you say being relegated reduces the ability to hold out for a higher price?

I wouldn't - with the parachutes now, they're good for a full 3 years paying their Prem squad - even before the recent hike you could have 2 years with the Prem squad on the same money without worrying about admin if you didn't go up. It's the player's decision on whether they want to risk being a "Championship player" when their next contract renewal is up basically.

Hardly, if Saints sign a keeper for 8-12m, that keeper will be first choice. Just as Liverpool signed Mignolet and shipped out Reina. Just as Chelsea have loaned out Courtois repeatedly because they had Cech.

in that case, we will need to sign two keepers, as gazza or kelvin as No.2 is simply not good enough

I agree

Personally i'd prefer to keep Boruc(who looked good last season), not buy Marshall(who seems way over priced to me too) & instead go after someone slightly younger like Alex Mccarthy who might be happier spending a season as understudy to Boruc.

After his excellent display at Arsenal, Boruc is being moved up to partner Gallagher.

one of the best keepers in the league last year IMO

He was, agree - but for long periods of his career he's been out of form and been dropped or backup - although admittedly some of that was injury related. Don't forget Boruc was brought in to replace him at Celtic and he's only ever been third choice for Scotland. For £8m plus you'd expect someone a bit less patchy.

You could get some fantastic keepers in Europe with that sort of money.

Think prices in England are really inflated, and explain why european clubs never go for English players.

Not convinced with that move, 4m maybe but 8m is an ennormous sum of money for an inconsistent keeper.

Thats a little unfair on Marshall.

A 25 year old international Artur Boruc joined Celtic for the 2005/06 season, David Marshall was only 20 years old at the time and not a regular before Boruc joined.

Agree its not directly comparable, just an odd symmetry about it. It's more worrying that successive Scotland managers have rated him behind Craig Gordon, Allan McGregor and even Matt Gilks at Burnley.

Still think Boruc is better, he just played in a much better team and didn't have to make loads of saves each match. Marshall still conceded a lot of goals and made errors.

Tend to agree. Friends who are Norwich fans thought he was poor for them after a decent first season and played a big part in their relegation to L1. I'm sure he's improved since then but it's still dangerous for people to want us to buy him based on one worldy display at SMS. I'm sure the backroom and scouting staff will have watched him over a far longer period but whoever suggested Alex McCarthy at Reading I agree with, he makes less 'camera saves' than Marshall but looks to have a far better command of his area. I've a feeling Marshall could turn out to be a bit of a Paul Jones - great first PL season but then weaknesses were exposed.

If we are planning to ship Boruc out and money is no object then Forster is good. Not overly a fan of Marshall, very highly priced and overperformed last season imo. As i've said repeatedly i've been highly impressed by Alex Mccarthy of reading everytime i've seen him & think he'd be very good value for money and a decent age to boot.

We need two top quality keepers. We saw what happened when Artur was out for a period.

Agreed. Don't understand the scepticism. Marshall is a very talented keeper and made some outstanding saves for a struggling Cardiff team. Still, at least our Scouts recognise that. Forster also good but I haven't seen enough of the latter to give a fair comparison.
