croydonsaint Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 Ok, so with all the threads around transfers in and transfers out and all the hand wringing going on [understandably] it will be interesting to see what every ones consensus is for the season ahead. Do you see us, 1. better league position than last season. 2. top ten 3. struggling but out of the relegation mix 4. Relegation fight but just safe at end of season 5. Relegation Accepting that to judge it now is to make assumptions on players coming in, as I think it is a given that as we are now we would be struggling and quite likely relegated. My prediction is struggling but out of relegation mix.
SaintRichmond Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 Struggling all season Staying up would be a result As Cortese himself said, you don't progress by selling off your best players. Can't argue against that I will be amazed if we stay up Anyone who truly thinks otherwise is really only looking through SFC glasses
Delmary Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 I see us fighting relegation. Too many key players have left, and others may leave too. It's very difficult to build a new team in one month and being competitive by the start of the new season. Think the new board have under estimate this challenge. It takes years for a team to gel.
angelman Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 Struggling all season Staying up would be a result Excellent, bring it on. I found the last 10-12 games last season somewhat unexciting given that they were fairly meaningless given our almost assured position of safety. Much more fun if we have something to play for. Who knows we might be lucky to get another Great Escape season, but given that we are back in stripes, reading the forum I feel assured this is our relegation outfit.
CB Fry Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 (edited) Far too early as we haven't built the team yet. I'm expecting solid mid table, because I can't see Koeman being worse than Steve Bruce or Mark Hughes. Edited 5 July, 2014 by CB Fry

WealdSaint Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 Would settle for mid table. 3 or 4 quality signings and a few £10's of million in the bank for a rainy day
angelman Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 You won't be saying "bring it on" if we go down You know, I am frankly beyond caring about it. I am looking for an excuse to give up with football and this might be it. I find my enthusiasm is severely tempered by the relentless pursuit of money.
Wopper Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 Hope we get sold soon the clubs being run by amateurs.
ratio_decidendi Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 You know, I am frankly beyond caring about it. I am looking for an excuse to give up with football and this might be it. I find my enthusiasm is severely tempered by the relentless pursuit of money. If you want to give up watching football, why don't you just do that? What keeps you coming back for more?
angelman Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 I have also changed my view on the make-up of the team. I guess I had the naive view that we could have players coming through who wanted to push on with the club - I blame Le Tiss for this! Now I am more than happy to be full of foreign mercenaries as what is the point of developing the teams of the big clubs? I know we get recompensed for it, but sod it.
angelman Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 If you want to give up watching football, why don't you just do that? What keeps you coming back for more? Cos I love Saints.
CB Fry Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 You won't be saying "bring it on" if we go down I could live with it.
Wrensup Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 I'm in Angelmans boat, I definitely agree with you on your last three posts.
Fan The Flames Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 As Cortese himself said, you don't progress by selling off your best players. Can't argue against that I will be amazed if we stay up Anyone who truly thinks otherwise is really only looking through SFC glasses Didn't you say our team as it was would have got a top four finish this season. Surely the prem isn't that tight that three departures means we go down.
S-Clarke Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 You can't really say until the window is closed. We could amazingly do better than last year, be embroiled in a scrap all season, be relegated before a ball is kicked....or stay, pretty much, the same. My prediction is for a bumpy ride, a season very similar to the one Swansea have just had - but ultimately the end result is mid-table.
Fozzybear Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 Struggling all season Staying up would be a result How about wait until we see who the club bring in this summer before writing off the whole season?
Batman Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 How about wait until we see who the club bring in this summer before writing off the whole season? Unless we being in players better than lambert, Lallana and shaw. Let alone lovren and Morgan. Which will not happen The fact we had a thin squad anyway with all those players had they stayed I just can't see us being anywhere as good as last season where we just added quality to a very settled squad
Fan The Flames Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 Unless we being in players better than lambert, Lallana and shaw. Let alone lovren and Morgan. Which will not happen The fact we had a thin squad anyway with all those players had they stayed I just can't see us being anywhere as good as last season where we just added quality to a very settled squad But under NC we had an ambitious squad on the road to breaking into the top four, surely our squad wasn't that thin.
Minsk Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 Too early to say really. However, whilst we probably won't replace those who have gone with players of better quality, we could certainly improve the squad depth overall. Given that we do bring in enough players of a good enough ability, I will go for mid-table; with a cup win thrown in!! Yes, I am ever the optimist!!!
positivepete Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 Hope we get sold soon the clubs being run by amateurs. Be careful what you wish for http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/jul/03/massimo-cellino-leeds-united-paddy-kenny
martyg1950 Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 (edited) Too early to tell, but with as many changes as we are going to have to make, I'd say we are certainly at risk of a relegation scrap this season. There are sufficient rubbish teams in the lower reaches of the Prem though that we'll probably be OK. We have an opportunity with a new manager and a warehouse full of money to build something special. If we can get through this seasons anxietys we could all be smiling again next year. Edited 5 July, 2014 by martyg1950 Typo
sentry Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 Last season us and newcastle were clear from the rest of the pack who were struggling,,, the top clubs will always be up there, then its just between the rest. I think we will be down in the rest next year with maybe Hull or Stoke being the comfortable two of the crap clubs this year. We should survive fine I think, remember there is a lot of crap in the league at the moment, Villa, WBA, Newcastle etc.
Chez Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 At this point in time I can't see anything other than a struggle, but we will have to see what happens with Lovren and Morgan and how quickly the new recruits settle in . Just taking Shaw out of the side would have effected us big style in my opinion never mind the others! and in such a closely fought league the slightest drop off our best can turn draws into defeats etc. if we do go down it's just as well the club haven't tried to bleed every last penny out of the fans over the last few years seeing long term season ticket holders fall away, because the club might need that support should some tough times follow this great period. Oh.
croydonsaint Posted 5 July, 2014 Author Posted 5 July, 2014 How about wait until we see who the club bring in this summer before writing off the whole season? To be fair the spirit of my original post was to speculate at this time where we think we will be at the end of the season. As I pointed out this means a level of speculation as to state of incomings and I guess further outgoings. Therefor your comment to Batman was unnecessary and missing the whole point of the thread.
Dibbs1988 Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 I really don't understand what's wrong with some of you. You clearly want saints to do bad just to boost your little egos by saying I told u so !! Sort it out for god sake !!! In my opinion we will probably be somewhere between 8-13th. Of course we need to wait and see who we buy in 6 weeks time. But at the moment I'm feeling reasonably confident . Yes we have lost Luke, Adam and Ricky. But we could end up buying better than we sold. The money we got for Luke and Adam is obscene when you look at what other players are going for. The players we are linked to. Pelle and Tadic. These two players here imo are at the very worst no worse than Adam and Ricky.. And any proper fan can't tell me that Ricky was struggling last year by the end. And Adam yea he had a great season but before that was he worth 25 million ? Tadic can fill his boots and more Can we all try and be a bit more positive. We have a great manager. A lot of money in the bank. And although sometimes I question it on here a great bunch of fans. There's no way in hell we will struggle next year. Look at some of the teams in the bottom half last year. We are better than they are now, even with all the departures !
pap Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 Probably one of the most worrying seasons in recent memory, due to all the upheaval. The watchword is unproven. Koeman hasn't managed here before, three of our best known players have done the offs, with possibly more to follow. Koeman is likely to raid the Eredivisie, so most of our incoming players will be unproven in the PL too. Then there's the question of whether we can knit all of this into some semi-functioning team. The spine of the team hasn't completely gone. Lallana could be famine and feast, as we all know. Rickie had his off days. I am genuinely gutted to have lost Shaw, especially as it seemed we'd finally cracked the left-back conundrum and the winger problem in one player. If player sales are stemmed now, I think we can get quality replacements. Even if Morgan and Lovren end up going for silly money, we can replace them. The only real problems are getting team cohesion and other clubs taking the píss because they know how much money we've got. Make no mistake though, they could be big problems. I'm fully prepared for a long dark November.
Dibbs1988 Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 It's comments like this that warrant a good head banging. Can you not remember where we were 5 years ago ? Can u not remember all of KL money that she spent getting us to were we are ? Can you not remember what it was like under Lowe ? How any saints fan can say that genuinely makes me angry. Can you please try and explain to me what the board have done to warrant such as opinion ?

kpturner Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 Relegation fights are depressing in the extreme, not exciting. Anyone who thinks otherwise have short memories. There is nothing exciting about losing week in, week out. The only positive aspect of a relegation fight is the euphoria you feel if you scrape out of it (a la Sunderland). No thanks - I'll take "safe by March" all day long.
Dalek2003 Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 I see us fighting relegation. Too many key players have left, and others may leave too. Dibbs1988 Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 'Amazed'?! Amazing. Id love to take that bet with all of you so sure we'll be relegated. Anyone keen? I would happily put a ton on that Saint Richmond if your keen ?
kpturner Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 Think the new board have under estimate this challenge. You really think so? What do you think they should have done differently then?
OldNick Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 I said when MP left that we would finish just above the relegation places. At present that may be downgraded unless we find some decent players to join us and the club put a stop to the players leaving. A cynic may think this is a cloaked firesale, the come and get me statement and then the players not for sale unless we get top prices is not the position of a club with serious intentions IMO KPTurners post is the most apt IMO

My prediction is struggling but out of relegation mix. Cannot make my mind up, but I would say number 3 or 4, it will be a struggle even with R.K. at the helm, too many players have gone and I reckon Morgan and Lovren are not far behind, so a total of 5 first choice players will have left, half the outfied team; sorry but that is a massive hole to fill with what appears to be players with no premiership experince, very sad but you cannot avoid facts.
Leicestersaint Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 We can dream of finishing 4th! But the PL is a hard unforgiving marathon and we don't yet have the squad to do well - if we manage to get several top-class new players in then we would have every reason to have high hopes. I do think we need a top-class keeper and CB.
adrian lord Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 Impossible to call presently because we simply haven't got a clue what the team will be. We have already lost our 3 best players. The next tier down may also be on their way if the rumours are to be believed. But realistically, it is not looking good in any objective view presently, even if Koeman is a virtual miracle worker and we get some signings.
Batman Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 well, at this rate Yoshida Ramiez Morgan Lovren Lallana Shaw Lambert went to the world cup, looks like two (if we are lukcy) will return
SNSUN Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 Mid table. Even if we're struggling at Christmas time we have enough money to blow our load in January to strengthen.
Colinjb Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 Right now and without strengthening, I would say relegation. I firmly believe we will strengthen though and that we shall be safe after flirting with the drop zone for a fair while.
DuncanRG Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 (edited) At this stage you're predicting what the team will be, not just how they'll do. I think we'll be competing for top half again but not as comfortably as we were last year, and might well miss out. Capable of much better if everything goes well, though. Edited 5 July, 2014 by DuncanRG
Saint_Abroad Posted 5 July, 2014 Posted 5 July, 2014 5th - 8th position. Rockin Ronnie and the Scintillating Saints will have a point to prove. While everyone criticizes the board (unfairly) they don't wear the boots on Saturday and Sunday. They're going to come out swinging and Ronbo will be a better manager at making a cohesive team.
