leeham_69 Posted 2 July, 2014 Posted 2 July, 2014 Hello all, been reading your posts in silence for about a year now and thought I'd pop something up for a change! Now that Lallana's declined the offer to have a stand at St Mary's name after him post-retirement, it occurred to me that we need a new skipper. If it was up to me I'd double Morgan's wages and make him captain for the foreseeable future. I know that the captaincy is largely just a title but the announcement would be a long-awaited piece of good news and intent. Failing that, it's a pretty tough decision! Probably Jose would be my next bet. Seems genuinely satisfied and dedicated to the club. What does everyone think?
melmacian_saint Posted 2 July, 2014 Posted 2 July, 2014 It should be Jose really as he was already third captain behind Lambert and Lallana.
ExSt Peter Saint Posted 2 July, 2014 Posted 2 July, 2014 It depends whether Fonte will start. It's a bit early to know who's likely to be in RK's starting line up this season. Cork, Morgan or Davis might be a decent shout if all still here and playing regularly.
melmacian_saint Posted 2 July, 2014 Posted 2 July, 2014 My biggest worry is whether RK will want a few Dutch-based or Feyenoord-based players to join, and immediately place them ahead of the players that are here. I feel that right now the last thing we need is to break up the existing core even further. But in all fairness, Tadic and Pelle seem like for like signings.
rick1976.4.38 Posted 2 July, 2014 Posted 2 July, 2014 steve davis would be a good choice isn't he captain for northern Ireland?
Dodo Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 Definitely Morgan or Fonte if either of them are here come august 16th
Saint Bones Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 Thinks there's some good calls above... Davis or maybe we can use it as a temptation to stay for Morgan and/or Lovren
doddisalegend Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 Steven Davis for me Captain of his national side, would lead by example and comes across in interviews as the sort of person the rest of the squad would listen to IMO.
Mr Saints Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 Jose - he's done it before and bleeds red and white
Fan The Flames Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 Give Morgan the armband and a pay rise. Steven D as vice captain.
Special K Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 Good question. I've always liked a sturdy centre back to be a skipper, so either Jose or Lovren, but Lovren seems to let pressure get to him a bit (both Spuds games last season he lost it a little bit), so either Jose or Davis for me - he has experience of it at international level. Also depends on who we bring in of course!
Saint Fan CaM Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 Steve D...you don't get the Captaincy of your National side for no good reason.
MarkSFC Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 If it's Fonte that suggests to me that we won't be buying a better CB (which would would be a negative thing) or Lovren is off (also a negative thing. As great a servant he has been if we are to progress we need better than Fonte. If he is third choice this season then we are in a strong position. The captain needs to be the first on the team sheet, and Lovren fits that bill as does Morgan. Needs to be a CB or CM. Steven Davis clearly has the skills to be the captain but if he plays every game I think we may be struggling in terms of overall quality. Like Fonte a decent player and a great option for some games and squad man. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Killers Knee Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 We cannot make a player the captain when that player needs replacing, so Fonte can be ruled out at an early stage. If Lovren is staying then I would give it to him, he is already the boss of the defensive line. If he's off the Morgan gets it on merit for being the best footballer at the club in a long while.
Bearsy Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 I would give it to JWP. It would be slightly mental, but it sets good precedent if ur captain came through the system and I can't see most the other candidates still being here in 3 years time.

Can strike Lovren off the list, for going on strike
Graffito Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 Steven Davis. Captain of NI. Formerly captain of Glasgow Rangers. Always professional on and, as far as I can tell, off the pitch.
ben05 Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 If Fonte is a nailed on starter (which at this rate it looks like he is) he's got to be captain. Saints through and through.
Minsk Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 It's a tough one at the moment, as we have no idea what our starting 11 will look like come August 16th. The captain should be the first name on the team sheet, a regular starter whenever they are fit. They should also have great leadership abilities and have the respect of their team-mates. I agree that both Steven Davis and Jose Fonte have the aptitude for the job, as have Jack Cork and probably even JWP, but I am not sure any of those will be guaranteed starters this coming season. IF Morgan stays, he would fit the bill; but I would prefer to wait and see how the squad looks in early August before going firm with that.

St_Tel49 Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 If Fonte is a nailed on starter (which at this rate it looks like he is) he's got to be captain. Saints through and through. I would be hesitant to say that about any player now! Steve Davis for me.
Badger Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 Morgan if he stays. Davis is potentially a good option but wonder if he'll be a regular starter ( depending on whose left of course).
Baird of the land Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 After the bad experience of Captain Lallana the Liver bird, i'd be leaning solid Steven Davis as Captain. Obviously Morgan has attributes to be good captain but would be nervous that he'd just be part of a conveyer of annual captaincy change.

Clearly has leadership qualities and I agree that it sets a good example to others coming through the system. Unfortunately, Lallana has set a precedent...

If none of those guys are starters next season I'll be shocked. We need to bring enough new players just to replace the out going one and shoring up last seasons weak spots in the squad. I don't think we can start replacing the proven players who are staying as well. Edited 3 July, 2014 by doddisalegend

Matthew Le God Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 Morgan if he is here, JWP if he is not I think its extremely unlikely a 19 year old will get the captaincy next season ahead of a number of senior players with good captain credentials. I do agree Ward-Prowse is captain material, but in the future.

buctootim Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 Steven Davis. Always gives his all so leads by example
Charlie Wayman Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 Morgan Schneiderlin is the only sane choice, not only a natural leader and control freak but also endowed with the silky skills that the others can admire and look up to. £60k per week + The Armband... What's not to like, monsieur?
KingdomCome Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 Steven Davis or Fonte for me, preference is for Fonte as he is more likely to be on the pitch at the start of the game! Both dependable, professional and seemingly respected at the club. I would consider Morgan or Lovren, but I'm not convinced either will be here. That alone tells me they maybe wouldn't make for a good captain.
beancounter saint Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 I'm surprised no one has mentioned Wanyama. Does he not captain his country?
dronskisaint Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 Whoever is left come August? Steven Davis on a more serious note...Wanyama would also be good
RobM Posted 3 July, 2014 Posted 3 July, 2014 Morgan for me too. I prefer a midfielder as captain anyway, somebody who's in the thick of things all game.
funkymojo44 Posted 4 July, 2014 Posted 4 July, 2014 Totally agree about Davis, but only question would be if he would get enough games under Koeman - he might not be in his plans especially with signings coming in. I would prefer him over Morgan and Fonte though. He has good experience as captain already.
Matthew Le God Posted 4 July, 2014 Posted 4 July, 2014 I'm surprised no one has mentioned Wanyama. Does he not captain his country? That may be because he is Kenya's best player by some considerable distance even at a young age. He even has it ahead of his brother who is at Inter Milan.
bazza Posted 4 July, 2014 Posted 4 July, 2014 Fonte. Davis' form dipped alarmingly for NI when he was made captain.
St Chalet Posted 11 July, 2014 Posted 11 July, 2014 Morgan if he stays for me. Wouldn't be upset with with Fonte or Steve Davis otherwise.
