I need a couple of guinea pigs...

first post :)

This is brilliant, I hate twitter, but it contains useful information... This helps me find it.

You should hawk it to the club, sure they would buy the ip to add to their website, they are all about social media now (apparently).

Thanks

May I echo the sentiments of my colleague The Gay Boot, and welcome you to the forum.

I must say that it fills by old and aching heart with joy to know that you broke your posting cherry just to laud praise upon ZeitgeiStMarys.

And thanks for the suggestion about selling this to the club, but this is bigger than the club, Plastic. This is bigger than you, it's bigger than me, it's bigger than TMS and everything and stuff and whatever.

I have a dream where Twitter is tamed and made accessible for all through the application of a few words, some statistics, a bicycle pump, some blue and orange paint and a length of sticky-backed plastic. I have a dream where every club in The Football League has it's own Zeitgeist cloud. I have a dream where MPs will raise ZeitgeiStMarys questions in parliament. I have a dream where old people sit in coffee shops and point their tablets at ZeitgeiStMarys so that their analogue brains can make sense of a digital world. I have a dream where Eugenie Buchard and her twin sister are anointing my...anyway, you get the point.

Like garlic bread, Plastic, it's the future!

And anyway, if entities like clubs were to allowed to control these clouds, they'd surely be censored.

The words Reed, ****, footballing and Les would appear and we'd blink and find they were automagically converted to Reed, Les, footballing and Visionary.

Word patterns like big, Katharina, masculine and girl would become Katharina, Big, androgynous and boned before our very eyes.

And Tokyo Saint sexually impales labradors, would transform to Kindly dog-loving Tokyo Saint helps injured dogs to walk again, uphill (from behind).

Where would it all end, Plastic?

BTW can I use your quote above in my nationwide print and tv advertising campaign?

Thanks. I've brought a bottle of rosé with me.

Nobody will judge you here, even if you do nudge the brown.

All are welcome.

Can't see a problem on Sony Xperia tab with Chrome and kit kat.

The main issues at the moment, hutch, surrounds the speed of rendering on smaller screens (this is less about computing power and more about the logic I use to ensure that the words all fit in and are tightly packed), and also Chrome Mobile erroneously tells me that the dimensions of the screen have been resized even if the user has simply scrolled. This forces me to do a redraw of the word cloud even though none is needed.

I saw the title of the thread (only just noticed..) and thought: "You never have a couple of guinea pigs - only one or many..". Then I thought 'Oh crikey, it's the muppet show, gaffer tape will be involved'...

In fact, although I don't use twitter I thought this a clever idea, the thread made me laugh and it's a very good way of representing information. Is the graphic software available separately: I can see possibilities for English language teaching?

Sage advice as always hutch. You lay off the beer and keep out of the sun, y'hear?

That was the idea suewhistle. As Plastic said below, I knew that there was interesting information on Twitter, but I couldn't be arsed to trouser* it.

I wanted a way to quickly show what are the most popular conversation topics and which ones are trending up or down.

Longer term I want to include discussions from other sources - particularly here. I'm waiting on permission from The Man for that.

As Polaroid Saint says, Wordle is a great site. Its creator Jonathan Feinberg produced the first reference implementation of the word cloud, and it is his IBM paper on the subject that provides the logic for the word cloud I use.

The other sites that Polaroid Saint mentions include Tagxedo and Tagul. These are both excellent, but place greater emphasis on making the word clouds form clever patterns.

Whatever you plan to do for your students, be aware that the best implementations focus on what NOT to put in the cloud. You'll probably notice that there are lot of English words that aren't shown. These are usually the common words - known as 'stop words' (articles, pronouns, prepositions, etc.), and because they appear most frequently and add little lexical meaning, they would simply drown the cloud. You, however, might want them to be in there. Just thought I'd mention it.

koeman today f.cked Brendan

Who is Brendan and what did he do to deserve the amorous advances of Ron

Art imitating life? I hope so. Not that I'm a particular advocate for gay sex. Not that I'm particularly against it either...

I imagine that Brendan Rogers Koeman probably isn't that far away from appearing either.

This morning, it appears that Lovren is being given some sage advice...

Thanks for that. Actually it might be interesting to do an implementation of both, as a comparison, and to highlight stress patterns and weak and strong syllables etc.. I'll try and get a few up before the British Council inspection... :-)

OK Muppets, I've updated ZeitgeiStMarys so you can now change the appearance of the word cloud. If you hover over the timer in the bottom left-hand corner, you will (hoperfully) see that 3 horizontal bars appear. If you click these you can then change the font, angles and colours.

Expect problems, please report any that you find.

Only one story in town this morning, although the day is still young...

OK Muppets, you can now (hopefully) share the word clouds.

In the bottom right hand corner of the screen is a button-like link named Share.

lpXbPT-09n87.png

If you click on that, it will (hoperfully) upload the word cloud to the mediacru.sh service, and from there you can copy the file location and post it on here. Like so...

Axi3PiWAL_iu.svg

Oh, but Muppets, here's the fantastic thing... the image is 'alive'. Whooa.

If you click on the image immediately above (not the first image in this post), it should take you to the image in a window if its own. Once there you should be able to click on the terms in the cloud, and you will then be taken off to search Twitter for those terms in relation to #saintsfc.

Note. To share the word cloud like this it will try to open a new window/tab. So if your browser is blocking pop-ups you will either have to manually allow popups to appear each time, or tell your browser that you're happy with pop-ups from that domain.

It's under-tested and a bit ropey at the moment, so please report any problems. (I don't think the downloaded images work properly in Firefox for example).

And hey, Muppets, I can see that this is getting plenty of usage, but there are very few comments on here.

All you lurkers, you know who you are, I'd really appreciate you telling me if anything is wrong on your PC/Browser configuration. A PM would be fine.

Hi Bletch,

Just thought I would check: if you can tell that I am using/sharing zeitgeistmarys, can you also see what porn I'm surfing?

Not quite sure how all this techy stuff works but if this is the case, this is a shared computer and it is definitely not me looking at teen latinas and amateur milfs.

Thought I'd better get that straight.

Love Goats.

Kewl! Looks OK so far on FF30.0.. Had to specify the domain for pop-ups, so if I get any nasties...!;-)

You're OK suewhistle, you have my word that no trojans will attempt leap out of my pop-up and try to enter your back door. Even if they did, rest assured that I use the finest quality prophylactic-ensheathed pop-ups.

Oh, and the cheques in the post.

One question re FF. Once you've uploaded the image to mediacru.sh, if you click it to open it in a window of its own, do you lose the font effect?

i.e. does the font change? It did in FF when I tested it. I think it is actually an issue with mediacrush and FF.

Thanks again for taking the time to provide feedback.

Well Gay Boot, all I will say is that whilst I can't tell what other sites you've been searching, if you check your webcam, you will see that the little green light next to the lens is illuminated.

Suspenders AND boxers shorts?

Fashion faux pas GB. I'm no expert, but it's surely one OR the other.

PS, one annoying thing is that if I have ZSM open in a tab, it doesn't continue to 'evolve' unless I actually click on the tab. Can it not continue to grow in the background or is this just me being techspaz?

It's a good observation (#notpatronising) and it's by design. If you haven't already done so, you have my permission to stop reading now...

There are two issues. One is that I don't get the browsers attention to draw stuff if it is not in the foreground (the top most window that has the focus). So even if I were trying to update this, it wouldn't work.

The other concerns how many requests are made to the servers that talk to your browser. Imagine if more than the 200 or so users I've seen so far were to be using it, and they each left an instance of ZSM (I like that BTW) running. My servers would be serving requests without anyone there to witness it. I really don't know how they will scale to service any sort of serious demand, so I don't want to be doing work unnecessarily. As a result I stop the timer from counting down if the window loses focus (is no longer the topmost window), or if the mouse pointer enters any of the graphics on the page.

It's good feedback though (#slightlypatronising), and what I can do is allow you to see when there is a later word cloud available, and then provide a way for you to quickly grab the new word cloud without needing to press F5 to refresh the whole page. Good idea (#verypatronising).

I hope some of that makes sense Gay Boot. Gay Boot?

Oh, and by the way, if it doesn't make you feel too grubby you can take a look at the MUFC version.

http://www.zeitgeistmarys.com/desktop-only/270614/2

As you might imagine, it's much more active, and as the #saintsfc twitter feed is quite quiet at the moment, you don't see a lot of evolution.

My systems analysis days are long over, but yes, it seems you do lose the font effect in mediacrush, but it comes back immediately if you click on the MC screen again. You have to click within the boundaries of the text, and not on the white margins outside..

Yes thanks suewhistle, I've just re-tested it.

The reason that it comes back when you click inside the image, is that it effectively downloads the image from mediacru.sh to your browser, and when it is re-rendered there your browser knows to use the right fonts.

I think it's an issue with the way mediacru.sh handles the (SVG) files on FF.

PS: Fred?! Pell??

You mean, why are they there?

Pell seems to be a misspelling (there's a hilarious word pun in there somewhere I feel) of Pelle, and if you click pell, you will see it shows that Pell has appeared erroneously in a couple of #saintsfc tweets.

One by a Dutch transfer monitoring user, and the other by the redoubtable Alex Goring Cock.

Fred is Fred Rutten the Feyenoord coach that I mentioned below.

Are you sure the Fred reference isn't from this article, Bletcherooney?

http://bwinbetting.com/leagues/premier-league/southampton-lead-premier-league-clubs-chance-fredjee,57802.html

Ahh, Deano6...the stateside Len Ganley, the thinking man's Michaela Tabb, the mathematical pedant's go-to mathematical pedant*.

Fred to Saints?

Well my snooker-refereeing ex-pat, in the words on Mao Tse-tung "I ****ing hope not!"

Once the word cloud has been shared, the wonderful terms that it captures for all of posterity are like so many ancient flies caught in amber.

All you need do is click on the word, and Twitter will be searched for that word. Clicking is just the cracking of the metaphorical amber, so that Twitter can free the metaphorical insect.

With me?

Well, this is a rather roundabout way of saying that when I clicked on Fred last night, it was Fred Rutten that came up.

Not that it will do you any good to click on Fred now, because a) he's not there anymore, and b) this is the "spirit of the minute" deano6 - like Father Time, Twitter has moved on...

Muppets, I need a favour.

I've sort of hooked up the forum to the word cloud generator. I'm a little way from launching it on the ZeitgeiStMarys site as I need a lot more testing.

The images below reflect the most popular terms being discussed on The Saints' forum - over the last hour or so.

They are interactive, and embedded behind each of the terms is a link to the search page of this forum.

I'd like you to click on one of the images below to open it in a new browser window, and then click on the terms in the word cloud to open a new window allowing you to search TSW for those terms.

Please search the forum for the various terms and let me know if the results are what you were expecting.

Background and some questions...

- The blue text is trending up, green text trending down and grey text is steady.

- I know there are some erroneous tokens in the cloud - td, smilies, etc.

- I've added the thread title to each of the posts which has made that text more prominent. Is this the right thing to do, or should I not include thread titles?

- Short terms (less than 4 characters) are not supported by the forum's search facility, so searching for them doesn't work.

- The usernames that appear in the cloud are there because they've been quoted. Is this the right thing to do, or should they be excluded?

- Should I add terms like player, players, season, etc. to the list of words I removed from the word cloud - because they don't add any real value?

Any other comments?

Thanks.

Pretty damn groovy stuff there. When I clicked an item, the search entry had that item plus its apostrophised possessive form plus, in some cases, hashtags of each of those (do you pick up items which are tagged in some clever way?). So that's pretty much as I'd expect - the actual search results are an interesting mix of threads and forums. I should think that the great thread of threads must appear in an awful lot of searches merely by dint of its overwhelming size.

And to your questions, my responses are:-

  • Adding the thread title to each post is the right thing to do - the thread's existence is significant in itself and this is then reflected in the word cloud.
  • Personally, I'd exclude user names - we all know who posts the mostest, and we don't really need to see the word Hypochondriac appear in every cloud. ;)
  • I'd also exclude a lot of commonly appearing words - player, thread, quote, season and more, as you suggest. The hardest part here will be knowing where to stop, as you could argue that the vast majority of words in posts lack any real significance. I guess adjectives and how they're trending will provide a good instant feel of the mood of the forum, nouns generally less so. Proper nouns will reflect subjects of discussion rather nicely.

I assume you already exclude strings of asterisks from the clouds, as I'd expect to see a fair number of them otherwise.

The Mighty Bletch? I prefer Bletch Almighty, but I'll take the reciprocal approbationary naming, especially as it makes such a nice change from the critical opprobrium of silence.

It metaphorically 'literally' warms the cockles of my heart to wake and read a word like approbationary - in TMS - especially since 'they' killed the hilarious fun with words thread!

Thanks for the feedback W D Folly. And yes, they are damned groovy.

I've added those additional 'stop' terms and will add more if they are suggested and provide no additional insight.

Regarding user names, I'm not sure I completely agree. I like the idea of this creating a community feel, and if people are being quoted or mentioned then they seem, to me, to be important. But I do take your point. I'll have a ponder.

The code is getting there, but I'm having problems with getting the colours to reflect the rates of change of the various terms.

Sorry papster, had to tell someone. The hoops I've had to jump through to get at that lovely, lovely content. It shouldn't happen to a real programmer.

But yes, it would be possible in theory to track posting habits. Reaching a definitive conclusion might be more difficult unless each actor quoted or named the other (and didn't use slang names - or stick to a limited set that could be learned).

But I'd like to hear your proposal, sounds like fun - well masochistic fun anyway.

Anyway, the reason for my attention being here instead of focussing on getting the new version of ZeitgeiStMarys running, is that I was about to issue a formal apology that this will take a little longer than planned.

Sorry Plastic et al.

Git submodules, eh pap? What's that all about?

I've been learning git and had to look that up.

Looks like git's version of a symbolic link. I'd say it's most useful for peeps that have a set of common libraries (base, data, etc) they want to include in their bespoke projects, but don't want to have to rely on parent path file structures to reference them. That's very useful, actually - bletch. Might use it myself.

I think it's pretty clear from the preceding posts that Lou Reed died a few months too soon. Had he lived, he'd doubtless now be penning a bleak masterpiece describing the agony felt by the denizens of TMS at the loss of their word clouds. We all feel sick and dirty, more dead than alive...
