Looks like there will be two Saints players in the team tonight. So they join the select group who have played for England in the world cup finals.

Paine (1966), Keegan (1982), Shilton (1986), Bridge (2002), Lallana, Shaw (2014)

There have been others who have played in finals, but not while Saints players. Hopefully more in 2018

Yes, you're right, although it was at WHL. He went to Italia 90

Right, don't remember much about that day except that we lost, Mark broke his leg,and that beer was difficult to get before the KO. Waited for ages for a pint in the "Black Horse" only to find out it was a LLoyds Bank.

I was about 10 yards from where Wrighty broke his leg. In fact, I heard it.

So did I. Sickening sound. :(

Think it's ok to still count Lambert. He was listed as a Southampton player in the official FIFA squad lists and his L'pool registration can't come into effect till 1st July.

That's wrong - that applies to players whose contract runs out. I checked with the club and they said Lambert is officially a Liverpool player

My mistake. Transfer window opened 9th June. However he WAS listed as ours on the official FIFA squads list

He was, not sure he went to Mexico with England though, didn't he break a leg in the cup semi at Highbury ?

I was at WHL that day I am sure that Aussie count Johnson gave Wright a shove in the back that pushed him into Shilts.

Having not been able to work out why FIFA still had Lambert as a Saints player I checked the Premier League Handbook, which says

V.2 "The first Transfer Window in any year shall commence at midnight on the last day of the

Season and shall end on 31st August next if a Working Day or, if not, on the first Working Day

thereafter, at a time to be determined by the Board."

So Lambert is a Liverpool player, even if FIFA's documentation http://resources.fifa.com/mm/document/tournament/competition/02/36/33/44/fwc_2014_squadlists_neutral.pdf says he isn't:

16 Phil JONES JONES Philip Anthony JONES 21.02.1992 DF Manchester United FC (ENG) 185 10 0

17 James MILNER MILNER James Philip MILNER 04.01.1986 MF Manchester City FC (ENG) 175 47 1

18 Rickie LAMBERT LAMBERT Rickie Lee LAMBERT 16.02.1982 FW Southampton FC (ENG) 188 6 3

19 Raheem STERLING STERLING Raheem STERLING 08.12.1994 MF Liverpool FC (ENG) 170 4 0

Actually it would have been midnight at the beginning of 12th May according to Premier League rules. You're right about the squad list.

All a bit vague. You're right about the PL rules but according to Wiki (yeah, I know  ) FIFA regulations are that the maximum window is 12 weeks, so counting backwards, that starts 9th June. But then it also states "Although, in England, the transfer window formally opens on 1 July, transfers between clubs in the same association can take place as soon as the last competitive fixtures for the season have been played. However, many transfers will not be completed until 1 July because many players' contracts expire on 30 June.".

I guess PL view is that if all parties, buying club, selling club and player are in agreement and there are no possible competitive fixtures after end of season in which the opposition could object to the player appearing, then there is no reason to delay the move.
