mulletsaint Posted 18 June, 2014 Share Posted 18 June, 2014 Evening all I know the season's a long way off and we don't know what the squad will look like come the start, but I thought it might be interesting to think how we might line up for that first match at Anfield. From what others have linked, it would appear that Koeman will look at what the squad's like and choose a formation that suits the players. For that reason I'd say there's a good chance we'll still be playing 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. But what if he decides to go with 5-3-2? I wonder in this case who the third CB would be, maybe a younger player like Chambers? Would Lallana play as one of the front two or as part of the midfield three? Here's my stab based on the players we have at the mo. Boruc Shaw Lovren Fonte Chambers Clyne Wanyama Cork Schneiderlin Lallana Rodriguez (when fit)
Bearsy Posted 18 June, 2014 Share Posted 18 June, 2014 You wouldn't want to play 3 dm's in that formation I reckon. It would be Southampton
mulletsaint Posted 18 June, 2014 Author Share Posted 18 June, 2014 I thought at times last season if we'd gone with those three in the middle it would free up Morgan to be more attack minded. Admittedly that would have been in a 4-3-3. Personally I hope we don't change to 5-3-2 but just wondering how we'd line up in that formation. Olallana Posted 18 June, 2014 Share Posted 18 June, 2014 In a 5-3-2 I´d drop Wanyama back when were defending but pushing him up into DM/CM position when we´re in control of the ball.
Turkish Posted 18 June, 2014 Share Posted 18 June, 2014 Let's hope like All good coaches he has more than one trick up his sleeve. I'm sure he will and we'll use more than one system.
ant Posted 18 June, 2014 Share Posted 18 June, 2014 The fluid Chilean 3-5-2/5-3-2 (complete with high tempo pressing) looked pretty tasty against Spain tonight and certainly asks questions of teams that like to hold onto the ball. It's a system that Koeman dabbled with towards the end of last season.
Polaroid Saint Posted 18 June, 2014 Share Posted 18 June, 2014 I do wonder about where the goals are gonna come from too, Bear. Seems the 'tweaked' 5:3:2 system would require different players to some we already have. Lallana for instance. Unless Ads is going to suddenly add pace to his box of tricks, we need more than just a Lambert replacement, two or three quick strikers. A fit J-Rod is a start. Oh no. I think I am about to type it. Yep. Here goes: Mayuka anyone? Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
Smirking_Saint Posted 18 June, 2014 Share Posted 18 June, 2014 Id imagine it will be the sameish as we play now, I.e a transition of 433/4231 Its how the whole set up is coached, suits the players and we have played that way for ages. Besides we dont have 2 strikers and an abundance of midfielders
Saint_clark Posted 19 June, 2014 Share Posted 19 June, 2014 If he's looking at systems that suit our current players, why would he play a 5-3-2 when by your own admission we'd need another CB?
JxgrSaint Posted 19 June, 2014 Share Posted 19 June, 2014 Unless Chambers shifts to CB (which apparently has been mooted in the past) or we buy Van Dijk and/or De Vrij...
david in sweden Posted 19 June, 2014 Share Posted 19 June, 2014 every manager has his own favourite system, and doesn't like to change. Can't really fault MPs attacking style, but all that ball possession surely should have produced more goals. If Koeman has his own special formation in mind, that will go a long way towards deciding .......who plays where.

Did you actually read my original post? Thought not. I just thought it would be interesting to think how he might utilise our existing players if he wanted to go with a 5-3-2. Need Luke to stay to play left wing back, Clyne on the right, Chambers part of a back three with Yoshida (or a new CB) and Fonte (assuming Lovern leaves). Jack/Victor, Morgan and Steven Davis in the middle. Up front errrrrrrrr who knows?................ Wilfred Bony and Nathan Redmond wouldn't be bad
