derry Posted 17 June, 2014 Posted 17 June, 2014 Yeah, the introductory meeting PowerPoint should be fairly inspirational. Glad he's met at least one of the players, anyway. His scoring record for a centre back wasn't too shabby either, 193 goals in 535 games. A lot of strikers would take that.
Ohio Saint Posted 17 June, 2014 Posted 17 June, 2014 Whilst RK's management and coaching experience and expertise is all important, I think when it comes to dealing with players it does no harm to have a stack of caps, medals and a high class playing record having played for the likes of Barcelona, Ajax and Holland. I was thinking this re: Shaw. RK was a world class defender who scored a LOT of goals too.....Why wouldn't Shaw want the chance to learn something from an ex-player like that?
angelman Posted 17 June, 2014 Posted 17 June, 2014 I am afraid that I am a pessimist/realist and being offered the best part of £80-100-160k a week (depending whether you want to believe the press) is more of a pull. He may well have been a Barcelona great, but he left before Shaw was born (by a month or so) and won Euro88 a month after AL was born.

RK was a world class defender who scored a LOT of goals too.....Why wouldn't Shaw want the chance to learn something from an ex-player like that? I would almost guarentee that Shaw wouldn't have heard of Koeman until he was linked with us, and almost certainly would have no idea of his achievements as a player.
Ohio Saint Posted 17 June, 2014 Posted 17 June, 2014 I would almost guarentee that Shaw wouldn't have heard of Koeman until he was linked with us, and almost certainly would have no idea of his achievements as a player. That's what Google is for.
S-Clarke Posted 17 June, 2014 Posted 17 June, 2014 I would almost guarentee that Shaw wouldn't have heard of Koeman until he was linked with us, and almost certainly would have no idea of his achievements as a player. Why? My brother is a year younger than Shaw, and him and his friends knew all about Koeman and the clubs he was at. Shaw is surrounded by football people, so what makes you think he wouldn't know who he was?
KelvinsRightGlove Posted 17 June, 2014 Posted 17 June, 2014 I would almost guarentee that Shaw wouldn't have heard of Koeman until he was linked with us, and almost certainly would have no idea of his achievements as a player. Best, Eusebio and countless others did all their best work way before I was born. I still know who they are, and did from a very young age. Don't be so effing patronising.
Saint Charlie Posted 17 June, 2014 Posted 17 June, 2014 (edited) Why? My brother is a year younger than Shaw, and him and his friends knew all about Koeman and the clubs he was at. Shaw is surrounded by football people, so what makes you think he wouldn't know who he was? Obviously knows who he is now, but I bet if you asked him a year ago he probably knew little of his career at all. Didn't he say recently his first England memory was in 2006 or something like that? Koeman is from a different era to the likes of Luke. He had only just turned 8 when Rooney made his Everton debut. Not saying age means you have never heard of players from a past era, but I doubt Shaw would suddenly decide to stay because of Koeman. A Van Gaal or Mourinho would be equally, if not more attractive to play for. Edited 17 June, 2014 by Saint Charlie

BARCA!!!! that is probably why the story of a transfer request came when it did the start of the world cup, his name in the news that he wishes to leave his club and a decent run out will probably get him that move

Considering we've been lucky enough to have two of the best penalty takers of all time playing for us surely you must concede it is an art? When you look at Gerrard's penalty record you know there's a great skill to them.

Not really the point, whether a defender takes penalties well or a striker it still boosts thir goal total, so when you have "striker would be happy with that" it negates the question somewhat. A penalty is a penalty, who was it that said no professional football should miss one, Lineker perhaps. Penalties are great but they alter stats.

CityRanger Posted 17 June, 2014 Posted 17 June, 2014 Decent article, not sure if its been linked yet: http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2896/premier-league/2014/06/17/4889633/- This snippet from the above caught my eye:"Despite a Copa del Rey triumph, Koeman’s time at Valencia was a disaster. The Dutchman managed to divide a dressing room in a single season and his man-management skills were under scrutiny after he dropped Joaquin from a matchday squad which included Ever Banega, who had been arrested for drink-driving. "Maybe next time I'll get pi***d and run a red light instead," said the winger, who subsequently blamed his omission from Spain’s Euro 2008 squad on the Dutchman." Ever Banega...

waggy Posted 17 June, 2014 Posted 17 June, 2014 If Koeman should read this dire thread he might wish he hadn't signed for SFC I would think he's read a lot worse in his career.
Lazlo78 Posted 17 June, 2014 Posted 17 June, 2014 I would think he's read a lot worse in his career. The Valencia fans consider him the worst manager and person EVER. He ditched Canizares, Albelda and Angulo who were all heroes at the Mestalla. So yes, I should think he has heard and read some proper nasty things in his career
dannysfc Posted 17 June, 2014 Posted 17 June, 2014 Am buzzing that we've got Koeman as manager now even if it is for 3 years or who knows more depending on how well he does and that yes I was gutted to see MP go but who knows Koeman may do better and we may sneak in a Europa league place but this is Saints so anything can happen so Good Luck Koeman! COYR!

I guess different clubs with very different ambitions but I can't imagine hating any manager who won the FA cup for saints. I still have Pardew down as a bit of a legend for winning the god damn JPT.

So yes, I should think he has heard and read some proper nasty things in his career i saw an interview with a Valencia player that he had a run in with the other day, bloke seemed to think he drank a lot of vino or something and stripped them of 7 millions euros or so for getting sacked. Joaquin I think his name was, Koeman dropped him for turning up 2 minutes late at a team talk but took no action over Ever Banega who got done for drunk driving and running a red light. Valencia was a total disaster for Koeman but it was 6 years ago, he's probably moved on since then.

I'm just surprised how strongly Valencia fans are still reacting to news about Koeman years later. They really don't like him

Pierre Posted 18 June, 2014 Posted 18 June, 2014 For the Ulrich Van Gobbel trophy, I hope. Or the Ken Monkou trophy, or Alexander Ostlund, or David Connolly or Marek Saganovsky. Any more bids?
SaintRobbie Posted 18 June, 2014 Posted 18 June, 2014 Must admit, would love to hear Koeman say the FA Cup is important to him and we will go for it... Unlike potty chino. That will also mean the mods will start writing stories for the Saintsweb homepage again, instead of the symbolic end of the season FACup story that's not been replaced since - even though we have a great new manager!

sotonist Posted 18 June, 2014 Posted 18 June, 2014 just switched tabs from a lallana thread. yeah shaw is unlikely to know who he is. shaw is unlikely to know who most people are though. i'm sure they can find him some videos to impress him with.

Saint George Posted 18 June, 2014 Posted 18 June, 2014 Hmmm...Maybe someone should tell him that's the way we've been playing for the last 18 months.....and the very same reason i would rather have seen Jorge Sampaoli or anyone else from the Bielsa stable get the job at Saints.....Really think we've missed a trick here, but onwards and upwards

Window Cleaner Posted 19 June, 2014 Posted 19 June, 2014 Well for one Bielsa joined Marseille before Poch even left us so was never an option. Mauricio acted as go between for Bielsa and the OM actually, could have put in a good word for us if he'd wanted to I suppose, perhaps he hadn't made up his mind about leaving in April/May.
Riin Posted 19 June, 2014 Posted 19 June, 2014 I think it's a very good step forward for Southampton to sign Koeman however it's perhaps a difficult moment to step in, due to the fact that Southampton were outstanding this year, and it's gonna be a massive job to continue that, otherwise I'm fully convinced about him as manager. Hopefully Pellè follows him, in 2013 Pellè and Bony were very comparable and look how Bony play and score now in England, I think Pellè can do the same, he is very strong if you give him the ball he never give it away in a duel with a defender. Of course the Eredivisie is more easy for him but I'm pretty sure he will make it in England. Virgil van Dijk is a quality defender who will be a decent replacement for Lovren, it's quite weird that LVG didn't pick him up in the Dutch national squad for the World Cup. But Koeman likes him and I think he can make him a better player, like he did with all players in Rotterdam. When Koeman joined Feyenoord there was no money at all and he had to pick up players from the U21 team to make them profs, a difficult job but he did it very well and now they are fully-fledged internationals. After De Boer, Hiddink and Van Gaal I think Koeman is the best Dutch coach you can get.

Saint Jude Posted 19 June, 2014 Posted 19 June, 2014 just had lunch with a guy who has two sons in the academy at Feyenord (as you can imagine is also a big Feyenord fan)... couldn't speak highly enough of Koeman and the work he's done with the kids and behind the scenes... also spoke very positively about Pelle.... also said that although he's a bit fiery.. Koeman handled him really well behind the scenes....
