Ziggy Posted 13 June, 2014 Share Posted 13 June, 2014 We have an exchange scheme in place at work with Australia and I ended up sat next to one of the Aussies a couple of nights ago. A nice bloke who confessed to not knowing much about football but said that his son had taken a shine to saints because of the way the club plays football and admiration at what the club is trying to achieve. Imagine my pride when explaining that I was a season ticket holder and spent the next half hour boring him with all that is great with the Saints! People have mentioned on other threads about our club being a laughing stock - well I beg to differ!

Danbert Posted 13 June, 2014 Share Posted 13 June, 2014 If we've reached the point where we're excited by nine-year-old plastics from Australia then yes, we are a laughing stock.

sadoldgit Posted 13 June, 2014 Share Posted 13 June, 2014 The people I speak to about football (I live in Kent) have always been complementary about Saints and the stream of quality players that we have produced over the years. They have never referred to us a "laughing stock" during our conversations and the departure of Pochettino was met with the expectation that we would get another decent manager in. I think we are only a laughing stock amongst some of our own fanbase and those to the East of us.
Tamesaint Posted 13 June, 2014 Share Posted 13 June, 2014 I was speaking to a lawyer at our company's Headquarters in USA. A young "Portuguese" American who was studying in London when Chelsea won the Champions League he considered himself to be a Chelsea fan.He however was very complimentary about us. He was aware of our young players like JWP and Chambers and admired the style of football that we play. I guess that NBC's coverage of the Premier League will mean that we will pick up a wider global following.Just get used to it and enjoy it!! angelman Posted 13 June, 2014 Share Posted 13 June, 2014 (edited) I tend to get the feeling that there are many clubs's supporters who look at us, look at the chance of the team being dismantled and really seeing that football is all about the have and have nots, with the haves being limited to about 6 clubs. With my rose tinted glasses on, I get the feeling that many supporters were/are desperate that someone break into the top positions to break up the immutable situation that we seemingly have now as well as to give hope to other clubs. But, without wanting to be too pessimistic, that isn't going to happen, although it will be interesting to see what happens with the new manager. I can't work out whether the press are approaching us with alot of schadenfreude or whether they have aligned themselves with the big clubs and treat us with a little disdain. Certainly at the beginning of the season when we were as high as 3rd, the press couldn't praise us enough for being in the mix, but that soon enough was replaced by dismantling the team. Maybe they feel that if they write articles that are helpful for the big clubs that they will be thrown a bone once in a while. adrian lord Posted 14 June, 2014 Share Posted 14 June, 2014 Yes, I met a chap at Neasden bus garage last week who thought we had done fairly well and said he had respect for us, although he reiterated his support for Chelsea and thought they would be in for Shaw, Dejan and Morgan once the WC is over. saintquin Posted 21 June, 2014 Share Posted 21 June, 2014 I don't know if this counts as winning fans but watching the England Thursday in Mauritius, two waiters were talking about the England team. One said to the other England should bring on Lallana, Lambert and Shaw. The other replied they should bring on Southampton, they could do better then the team on the pitch. Made me smile. Laughing stock to the Press and internet WuMs yes. Speak to anyone in football and Saints are respected all over Europe. Parents of young pros I have spoken to all say that the talk of 16 to 22 year olds in the game is of how Saints run the academy and give youth a chance. We may end up losing a few top end pros this summer but the club will continue to thrive with the structure we have. Golden Balls Posted 22 June, 2014 Share Posted 22 June, 2014 Most non saints fan I speak to genuinely see us as their 2nd team. A lot of football fans seem disappointed that our team is being broken up as I think people genuinely wanted to see what we could achieve.
