Fitzhugh Fella Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Was it MLT with his 47 out of 48 or was it SRL with 34 out of 34? Certainly no one else comes near. So if your life depended on a penalty being scored who would you pick?
shurlock Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 MLT - more pressure pens (usually as part of a relegation dogfight) against higher quality keepers.
sandwichsaint Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 I'd take either, 81/82 is an astonishing conversion rate. What's the 'average' conversion rate in the PL? It can't be above 90% can it? FF, what's David Peach's record if you have it to hand?
Mallagroth Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Was it MLT with his 47 out of 48 or was it SRL with 34 out of 34? Certainly no one else comes near. So if your life depended on a penalty being scored who would you pick? SRL actually. Once you miss one there is always going to be that doubt. (If I had to pick)
Berkshire Saint Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Probably MLT overall for shurlock's reasons. Although Lambert's two at Millwall for example were pretty high pressure! We've had plenty of decent penalty takers over the years. Don't think Beattie, Pahars or Dodd ever missed one and they must have taken around 20 between them. Between 2005-2009 we missed a fair few (Quashie, McGoldrick, Rasiak and John spring to mind) though!
shurlock Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 SRL actually. Once you miss one there is always going to be that doubt. (If I had to pick) Was at the Forest game where he missed the pen (the follow-up was even worse). It didn't do anything to his confidence after that. Le Tiss was the last player in the world to dwell on anything -was the epitome of nonchalance and serenity- whereas I could see Lambo dwelling on a miss.

It can't be above 90% can it? FF, what's David Peach's record if you have it to hand? I know Peach missed at least 2 in the 20 odd he took and Beattie had a 100% record but only 12 Edited 9 June, 2014 by Fitzhugh Fella
krissyboy31 Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Le Tiss because all of his league pens were against top flight keepers. It will be interesting next season, when we won't be able to chalk up the goal before the penalty has been taken.
Bearsy Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 I won't be able to watch if Rickie takes one in the World Cup. I reckon all this never miss puts him under extra pressure & I would have such bad feels if he sky'd one
david in sweden Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 I'd take either, 81/82 is an astonishing conversion rate. What's the 'average' conversion rate in the PL? It can't be above 90% can it? FF, what's David Peach's record if you have it to hand? now that's an interesting question. According to whatever record book you read. David Peach (a left-sided defender, mostly playing at LB between 1973-1980) scored a total of 44 goals in 278 apps. Of those, 20 were "outfield goals and 24 were successful penalties (of 26) he missed 2. Although it doesn't surpass either of the above, he does hold the FA record for highest number of penalty goals scored by a defender). George O'Brien (leading goalscorer in the early 1960's) was a good penalty expert, but I don't have any stats. to hand. Terry Paine also took quite a few in his career, but didn't always score.
ericb Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Le Tiss for me, just for the way he did it. As great as Lambert was Le Tiss' did it for far longer and (for me at least) with more style and panache.
BARCELONASAINT Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 MLT all day long. Agree with others that his pens were more pressure based.
david in sweden Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Was it MLT with his 47 out of 48 or was it SRL with 34 out of 34? Certainly no one else comes near. So if your life depended on a penalty being scored who would you pick? what a good question that is. Both had a very easy manner of taking them.....MLT could place them to left and right, and Rickie just hits them as hard as he can off of a short run-up. Statistically... MLT has scored more (but he was with us much longer). Rickie has a 100% record although he did admit (in interview ) that he had missed a couple in his earlier career before Saints. I really don't care. You have to trust someone and I just loved seeing them do it in a Saints shirt. I hope that England can find 4 others (incl. RL) in case of one of those dreaded WC shoot-outs.
WealdSaint Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 A tough one. I'd go for MLT at the moment. But if Rickie puts away a penalty (or 2) at the world cup he might edge up BTW I've decided that for the purposes of the World Cup that Rickie is still a Southampton player until 1st July.
channonwindmill Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Was at the Forest game where he missed the pen (the follow-up was even worse). It didn't do anything to his confidence after that. Le Tiss was the last player in the world to dwell on anything -was the epitome of nonchalance and serenity- whereas I could see Lambo dwelling on a miss. Yeah I was at that game too. We lost 2-1 but our goal was one of MLT's classics if I recall. Sort of made up for the penalty miss.
Cabrone Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 For me 3 players completely stand out. No 1 has to be Le Tiss as he took every one of his penalties in the top flight, 2nd is Ricky Lambert with his 100% record for us and 3rd is Beattie who scored 16 from 17 in the prem league (and I think had a 100% rate for us?). We've been very blessed with the quality of our penalty takers over the last 25 years.
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 9 June, 2014 Author Posted 9 June, 2014 Easily Le Tiss, took more at a higher level. But he did not have an 100% record
Pamplemousse Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Did Lambo miss any pens before joining us? http://www.bristolpost.co.uk/Lambert-s-penalty-miss-proves-costly-Bristol-Rovers/story-11273000-detail/story.html
Heisenberg Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 http://www.bristolpost.co.uk/Lambert-s-penalty-miss-proves-costly-Bristol-Rovers/story-11273000-detail/story.html Thank you 100% MLT then
aintforever Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 But he did not have an 100% record Neil Ruddock had a 100% record for us as well.
Gemmel Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 (edited) Question for the stattos; Are Saints the most successful penalty takers in all leagues .....fook it Europe, over the last twenty years? MLT and Sir Rickie with one miss between them - I think we must be close. We had the gap and missed two in one game once, but even so, I think we must be the most successful penalty club in World Edited 9 June, 2014 by Gemmel
VectisSaint Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Was it MLT with his 47 out of 48 or was it SRL with 34 out of 34? Certainly no one else comes near. So if your life depended on a penalty being scored who would you pick? Dave Peach.
Kenilworthy Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Neil Ruddock had a 100% record for us as well. Afraid not. He missed against his next two against Forest away and Wimbledon home a couple of weeks after the Newcastle game.
Graffito Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Pressure next season on whoever replaces Lambert as penalty taker.
Dr Who? Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Matty was the king of pens without a shadow of a doubt. Coolly placed in the corners.... Fantastic that Man!
Dr Who? Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Pressure next season on whoever replaces Lambert as penalty taker. Messi?
dubai_phil Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 We all kinda know deep down that SRL will miss one in the WC, so apart from that nagging doubt, MLT for the reasons put so eloquently above
Roger Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 But he did not have an 100% record But he did it in the top flight all his career and lambert might miss on the next 13 if he'd have stayed
rpb Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 now that's an interesting question. According to whatever record book you read. George O'Brien[/b] (leading goalscorer in the early 1960's) was a good penalty expert, but I don't have any stats. to hand. Terry Paine also took quite a few in his career, but didn't always score. I recall O'Brien missed one deliberately in the cup against a non league team (Hersham?) - we had already scored 6 and he seemed to think they had suffered enough so side footed it wide. Paine missed two against Northampton but in each case scored from the rebound.
Hatch Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 when was the last time we missed a penalty during a game ?
Batman Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 when was the last time we missed a penalty during a game ? billy sharp away at blackpool. we got proper done that day. well beaten
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 9 June, 2014 Author Posted 9 June, 2014 Thank you 100% MLT then But this is about Saints, I daresay Matt missed a few for Guernsey Rangers
Hamilton Saint Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Le Tissier. I thought James Beattie was excellent too - just as good as Lambert.
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 9 June, 2014 Author Posted 9 June, 2014 Le Tissier. I thought James Beattie was excellent too - just as good as Lambert. Yet Beattie took just 12 pens for us and Lambert 34 so how can you say they were equal? #intrigued
Stud mark of doom Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 when was the last time we missed a penalty during a game ? I remember we missed two in the first 10 mins against, I think, Watford around 2008. Lost 3 0 from memory.
dronskisaint Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Le Tiss, we have been blessed with having both but Le God shades it..
Viking Warrior Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Difficult one to assess but I will go with Matt . It is a hard decision to make
Saint Charlie Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Hard question but many of Lambert's were actually unsaveable. Superb technique and had a fair few pressure ones too.
Halo Stickman Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 I won't be able to watch if Rickie takes one in the World Cup. I reckon all this never miss puts him under extra pressure & I would have such bad feels if he sky'd one Yep, I’ve been worrying about this too Bear. As to FF’s question, Le Tiss just ahead of SRL for me.
Fowllyd Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Has to be Matty - Rickie may have a 100% record for us, but he never had to take one against Mark Crossley!
Whitey Grandad Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 I remember we missed two in the first 10 mins against, I think, Watford around 2008. Lost 3 0 from memory. Paul Wotton?
saint si Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Paul Wotton? And McGoldrick the other http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/reports/reports0809/3833518.Saints_0___Watford_3/
Whitey Grandad Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 And McGoldrick the other http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/reports/reports0809/3833518.Saints_0___Watford_3/ Ok. Which was the match in which Wotton missed two?
