dubai_phil Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Shocked just seen on Sky News RIP Rik. Massive part of my Youth
jjsaint Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 'This house will become a shrine, and punks and skins and rastas will all gather round and hold their hands in sorrow for their fallen leader...' RIP Rik.
pap Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Big loss. The man was a massive influence in the early 1980s. He found lasting fame as Rik in The Young Ones, but was kicking around our screens much earlier as part of his Dangerous Brothers double act with Ade Edmondson. If you had a criticism of the bloke, it'd be his comedic range. He spent most of his life playing the same character, Blackadder's Lord Flashheart being the obvious exception to his habit of playing a women-repellent loser. Still, he was memorable in pretty much everything he did and always went for it if it made things funnier, no matter how ridiculous he looked. My recommendation for remembering the man? Mr Jolly Lives Next Door, also starring the talents of Peter Cook and Nicholas Parsons.
ecuk268 Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 A real talent. Loved him in Bottom, the odd appearance in Blackadder and as Alan B'stard.
pap Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 A real talent. Loved him in Bottom, the odd appearance in Blackadder and as Alan B'stard. I'd forgotten all about Alan B'stard. Superb performance.
Gemmel Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 What's your crime then spaspecker Whistling on a Tuesday Jester You B@stard
Micky Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Great comic actor. Sad, sad loss, far too young. But on the bright side - it's going to be hell in heaven for the next couple of days while he settles in...
Lets B Avenue Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Shocking news. Always remember this and hadn't seen it for nearly 30 years. You will recognize a few faces.
Suhari Posted 9 June, 2014 Author Posted 9 June, 2014 Will sink a bottle of Bombardier tonight. Bang on.
alehouseboys Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Kevin Turvey investigates... "got the time on yer cock?" Another sad loss.
View From The Top Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 This house will become a shrine, and punks and skins and rastas will all gather round and hold their hands in sorrow for their fallen leader. And all the grown-ups will say, "But why are the kids crying?" And the kids will say, "Haven't you heard? Rick is dead! The People's Poet is dead!"
The Majestic Channon Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 People forget the underrated filthy rich and cat flap , I've been a huge Rick fan since Kevin turvey and was gutted on hearing the news tonight, he seemed genuinely down to earth and humble always, Sent from my C1905 using Tapatalk
bpsaint Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 "Edward Elizabeth Hitler, come down here at once!!" . Utter legend, loved The Young Ones and Bottom whilst growing up, really gutted by the news.
The Majestic Channon Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 I agree, I may I say what a smashing blouse you're wearing Sent from my C1905 using Tapatalk
norwaysaint Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Kevin Turvey, the dangerous brothers, (p)Rick, Richie (rich and Richard), Alan B'stard, Flashheart, all those comic strip characters, even Drop Dead Fred, he really was certainly the most quotable comedian/comic actor for my generation. His material probably made up about 70% of playground talk when I was at school. Massively influential and comedy wouldn't have been the same without him. RIP
Whitey Grandad Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 That's a shock. He stole the show in Blackadder. Thanks for the memories Rik.
mcjwills Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 I'd forgotten all about Alan B'stard. Superb performance. Was great as Alan B'stard, trouble was in retrospect he was closer to the truth than he could have imagined re fiddling expenses, slavery (working for free) to get people off the dole. Will be sadly missed and makes you realise how fragile life is, especially as I was born the same year as him.
aintforever Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 How sad, I loved the young Ones and Bottom when I was younger. He was one of the great comic actors.
doddisalegend Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 (edited) RIP Rik the New statesman was one of my favourite shows in my youth Alan B'Stard: Who in this country was not moved when that great Englishman, Gazza, wept bitter tears at the World Cup last year? People thought that he was crying because he had been booked by the umpire and so would miss the final. But that was not the reason. He was crying at the thought that the Conservative government, the only government this young hero had ever known, was behind in the opinion polls. He was weeping at the threat of the return to power of a Labour rabble led by a bald Welsh windbag, dedicated to destroying Britain's prosperity, running down our currency, encouraging satanist abuse of our children, spreading AIDS through their sponsorship of homosexual behaviour, abolishing the House of Lords, and executing the royal family. Gazza didn't want that for his children, do you want it for yours? Or do you want a government that lets you share in Britain's prosperity by offering you the chance of five, yes five, free Sun jackpot bingo cards with every registered Tory membership application? Yes, apply now to join the Tory party at this week's once in a lifetime special offer price of only £9.99 and you will receive a free Tarzan Teenage Hero Turtle T-shirt, a Gazza car tidy, and the News of the World every Sunday for a year. dronskisaint Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 Deeply sad, way too young to lose such a talented and original all round talent...Rrrrrwik!
Fowllyd Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 An early, very angry poem from Rik: "But I don't know Vanessa Redgrave!" Brilliant. RIP Rik.
scotty Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 (edited) "Good evening, my name is Kevin Turvey. Why?? ...err, I dont know... " Great comedian, my personal favourite being Alan Beresford B'Stard, who turned out to be a prescient template for future politicians, both blue and red. RIP. edit; Here's a lovely piece of improvisation, from our very own Mayflower theatre. Edited 9 June, 2014 by scotty as above.

bpsaint Posted 9 June, 2014 Posted 9 June, 2014 This house will become a shrine, and punks and skins and rastas will all gather round and hold their hands in sorrow for their fallen leader. And all the grown-ups will say, "But why are the kids crying?" And the kids will say, "Haven't you heard? Rick is dead! The People's Poet is dead!" That episode is currently on Gold as a tribute, by far my favourite episode of The Young Ones. " Hands up who likes me!"
Saint in Paradise Posted 10 June, 2014 Posted 10 June, 2014 Sad news indeed at his young age. However I wonder if bashing his head when he had his quad bike accident had any long lasting effect ?
tpbury Posted 10 June, 2014 Posted 10 June, 2014 That's a real shock. I think he appealed to nerdy types but did great mass appeal slapstick as well.
jjsaint Posted 10 June, 2014 Posted 10 June, 2014 Will sink a bottle of Bombardier tonight. I forgot about that, he was the Bombardier as well. Must plan a Charlie Wells pub crawl in his honour.
Dimond Geezer Posted 10 June, 2014 Posted 10 June, 2014 Sad news indeed at his young age. However I wonder if bashing his head when he had his quad bike accident had any long lasting effect ? It's been reported that he suffered from epilepsy as a result of that accident, so he could have had a fit.
Saint_Ash Posted 10 June, 2014 Posted 10 June, 2014 Very sad news, was one of the best comedians on the tv when I was growing up, seen him live a few times on the Bottom tour and I've never laughed so much, especially when they mess it up and they improvise. Saw him a couple of years ago at the mayflower doing a B'stard type character and he still had it. I had a bottle of Bombardier Colonel's Choice, 6% of loveliness. Cheers for the laughs Rik, always up there as one of the bests for me.
S-Clarke Posted 10 June, 2014 Posted 10 June, 2014 This was a real shock when I heard this. He was one of the classics. Bottom was epic.
Goatboy Posted 10 June, 2014 Posted 10 June, 2014 Mr Jolly Lives Next Door. Another great that hasn't been mentioned yet. Will be sadly missed. Another part of my youth gone.
Special K Posted 10 June, 2014 Posted 10 June, 2014 Mr Jolly Lives Next Door. Another great that hasn't been mentioned yet. Will be sadly missed. Another part of my youth gone. Escorts Bestcorts! Come in if you're saucy! Classic. As was Dirty Movie and A Fist full of Travellers Cheques. Loved the comic strip and pretty much everything Rik Mayall did. Sad loss indeed.
pap Posted 10 June, 2014 Posted 10 June, 2014 Mr Jolly Lives Next Door. Another great that hasn't been mentioned yet. Will be sadly missed. Another part of my youth gone. Do you have me on ignore, Goatboy? Another Olde English pub, mate.
