Saint Charlie Posted 31 May, 2014 Share Posted 31 May, 2014 Could it be that the Board are actually not fussed about selling the existing players as many are still tied to the Cortese reign and are trying to bring about a fresh start where players loyalty is to the new board? Some of our players would most likely never be fans of the new setup because they were sold the 'dream' (rightly or wrongly) by Cortese. By getting rid and banking a load of cash they can build a squad that largely didnt know what it used to be like at Saints, have no loyalty to the old setup, and therefore perhaps are more motivated going forward and would be happier to operate to the goals of the new regime rather than the existing players settling for less? Also no coincidence that the ones out the door, Shaw aside, will be on big money, which perhaps won't be on offer anymore. Can see from the club's perspective how they might feel that getting rid of the players most closely linked to the old setup could bring about a fresh start, otherwise they might never be truely accepted by the players. Might be rubbish, just trying to rationalise things (if that is even possible). Wouldnt mind betting that within a year, many of the players that were the face of Saints in the Cortese era will no longer be here (either sold or will refuse to sign new contracts and then will be sold). I wouldn't say that would have been their original aim, no, BUT with all the bids coming in and what looks like a lot of players wanting to leave, then that could become a strategy. doddisalegend Posted 31 May, 2014 Share Posted 31 May, 2014 (edited) We've come a long way in a short time far the last few years it was easy to convince the players we where heading in the right direction and progress was going fast enough to keep the players onside. Any further upward movement by the club at the end of the 5 year plan was always going to be much slower. We are now at a point where the club can no longer match the ambitions of some of our players we can tell them our aims but why should they wait for Europe or trophies if a bigger club will offer the same right now? That's what is happening right now our best players ambitions are out stripping what we can offer them. I think the club might as well cash in on it's stepping stone status lets recruit and give hungry, young and ambitious players (from the lower leagues or outside Europe) a chance. Get them in cheap develop them and sell them on after a couple of years. Loyalty died in football years ago so lets use our PL status and current reputation as a good place to develop to bring players with a point to prove give them a stage and cash in on them if the excel. Not rocket science really but it does require the club to have a top notch scouting network, excellent coaches and continued improvement of the academy. I wish I could believe it was this, in the same way I wish I could believe in Jesus and eternal life in Heaven. Unfortunately I can't and think the present regimes' motives are far more cynical. This is far too sensible to be accepted on here! ;0) For what it's worth, I agree. Good post.
