Stop comparing Lambert to Le Tissier.

Le Tissier was loyal Played his while career here ans saved us more than once for the drop.

Lambert is not loyal has Played only 2 seasons and only Played 5 years so mentionning him in the same breath as Le God

Agreed, just saying this is how we would have felt if Matty had left, gutted.

IF the money quoted is correct, as much as I like Ricky, It does make sense to cash in. Pity It couldnt wait till after the world cup, but he could have a mare, suffer a really bad injury or anything. Lets face it not that long ago people were saying hes not up to it anymore.

I wish him the best of luck my only concern is it could open the flood gates if the board dont toughen the f*ck up over the next month or so.

I only started supporting saints our first season in the championship, I have only known **** times.

But so far this closed season I can honestly say i have never felt so disconnected from my club/team/players and felt so depressed about supporting saints.

Since our first year in the championship? For over half your Saints supporting life you've had it better than you'll ever have it again. If you think its been nothing but ****, give up now.

This past week brings to mind certain lyrics from 'My Way' by Frank Sinatra: "You're riding high in April, shot down in May." "I said that's life (that's life), and as funny as it may seem some people get their kicks stompin' on a dream. But I don't let it, let it get me down 'cause this fine old world, it keeps spinnin' around."

Hopefully as per the song we're gonna change that tune and be back on top, back on top in June!

Accepting the same measly amount of money we paid for Vegard Forren and Rory Delap is not what I would describe as "cashing in". Considering he is our talisman, a hero, our only fit striker, an England international, a World Cup player, the penalty king, a set piece specialist and many other lovely things, 4 million rushed through before the World Cup is basically a theft.

Who cares if Rickie wanted to go? If they offered 20p and a pack of biscuits would we have accepted the deal just because Liverpool gave the board a deadline? Amateur hour!

Excellent song, and it's so true.

Even though we enjoy a good rant and rave about players leaving a football club, the sun is still gonna rise tomorrow and there are plenty of coconuts left to be drunk, so all is not lost.

Thinking with my heart I'm gutted Lambert is going. When he was signed it was the beginning of a new era and his goals were a massive part of the success that followed. He has probably done more than any other player in the last five years to bring on a new generation of saints fans my kids have grown up with him as their favourite player. He will go down as one of those players still talked about for years to come not only for his football but because he was a decent bloke to that people couldn't help but like. All that makes it sad he has gone

Thinking with my head he will be 33 next season we needed to bring in a replacement for him soon anyway so if selling him help funds a new younger striker it's probably a good thing. Even if we only got 4 million we made 3 times what we paid for him and we have had him at the peak of his playing ability. If we are going to carry on playing the high press Southampton way a quicker younger striker will be better than Lambert. The club tried to replace him with Osvaldo this season and where happy to sell him to WHU when NC was here so rickies days at saints were numbered. The price seems low but regardless of everything else Lambert is in the twilight of his career how many players heading into their mid thirties go for big money?

Gutted he has gone but probably the right decision by the club if I'm honest. The fact he got a move to Liverpool to finish his career is good to because try as I might I find it impossible not to like the guy.

Pretty much how I feel.

We were going to have to get along without him at some point in the very near future, and this is a good fee for a 32/33yo striker, and a great move for him.

If we're honest not many of us expected the service we've had from him, and particularly in the PL. Pardew was probably the only one who saw that potential when he signed.

Great memories, and now we move on.

Good reasoning. Get working on why it was good to sell Lallana and Shaw now. Looking forward to reading that.

....feel much the same. Was beginning to get used to the idea that Shaw and Lallana would eventually move on - but the Rickie sensation came as a bit of a shock.

It's not the money of course.......£4 mill. doesn't sound much compared to the £20 plus millions being bandied about for Shaw and Lallana, but it was the " emotional attachment" that everyone has formed for RL and his success story from " Beetroot factory to Brazil " that caught everyone's imagination that is hard to swallow. Still, I won't deny Rickie his moment(s) of glory. He's earned them all.

Everyone thought at 32 he was already " past the sell-by date " for Prem.strikers ....and for him the light at the end of the tunnel must surely have resembled being blinded by the oncoming headlights....

No!.... times change, managers and squads, too. Now we must wait and see who remains after the mad stampede for the exits, and then let the new manager build his squad of loyal players.

It won't be hard for me to continue enjoying Rickie Lambert as a Liverpool player (I've always liked them since the Shankly days of Euro football in the 60's)...but the thought of some of our other players moving to ....."Spuds".....or even Man.Utd. hurts far more !

P:S: suddenly there was a deja-vu feeling that recalled that when Ron Davies left in 1973.

7 years and 153 goals, but we all knew it was ineveitable that a 31 y.o. couldn't cut it forever at the top level.....but there was a sort of sadness all the same.

A great player for us and a nice guy. As many others have said he is in the twilight of his career and we will have to do without him anytime soon. He has looked tired in the last 20 mins of games recently and we do not know what the coaches GPS systems show up during games and training. A good move for Rickie and good money for Saints. Good luck to him.

The fact that the board have caved in to the case of they don't want division between an uphappy player and the club, that has made an unfortunate president. Now where's that Krueger avatar that seems so popular

That says it all for me too David, Rickie has earned the right to choose in my eyes so we will be forever grateful and hope for the best for him in the World Cup too

Completely disagree. He will accomplish what is porobably his life dream of playing for his hometown club that he grew up supporting and after having played in a world cup. Likeley he will end his career in a Liverpool shirt. 6 years (and even 6 month ago) that would have been unthinkable for him

This is a a personal and emotional move for him and that will far out weigh anything he could achieve here.

Good luck to him I say. He's been a legend for us and I'll be forever grateful for his goals that propelled us to the Premier league and gave us some of the most positive few years I've experienced as a Saints fan.

Thats exactly what I was thinking yesterday. Of course we had Micky Channon to worship as Ron left

Rodriguez scored more goals last season. This is his chance to step up. He wont be sold. Clubs will wait to see how he is after his injury.

And he scored more than Lambert last season. We struggled to score from open play after his injury too.

Thank Lambert. Good Luck. And we move on.

Coincidentally, they have both played their final match at home to ManU. Difference being SRL scored.

I don't begrudge Rickie going to his beloved Liverpool who are in the Champions League next year, I would have been unhappy selling him to the likes of West Ham where it would have appeared that he just didn't want to be with us anymore.

Unfortunately we have reached a stage in Saints development where we are at the end of our 5 year project (and the new project isn't clear, to us anyway), had a fantastic season where our players have shown to other clubs how good they are and invited interest, lost NC, lost MP and there is uncertainty going forward. These in isolation or certainly combined are good reasons why players will be considering their futures and career progression. Again I cannot begrudge a loyal (over 3 years at Saints) player the chance to go to a good Champions League club (home or abroad), we should feel priviliged that our club helped to get them there. If they go to similar clubs to ours just for the money then that's a different matter.

I think that all of us, players included, need to keep level headed for the next month until we know who the new manager is, which new incoming players are being touted and clarification of the Boards commitment to the club. If we get a World Class Manager (potentially) better than MP and a class striker better then Lambert then things might not seem so bad. It is important to get the new manager in ASAP though to 'stabilise the ship' and give some direction as far as players staying/going are concerned.

You'll probably think this is trite, but here goes anyway:

"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference."

I've moved on, and will if those two get sold. Players come and players go; It makes no difference to my life, and will not affect my support for SFC.

Doubt we'll see Rodriguez till Xmas. New signings are going to have to be top drawer.

I've never understood why so many of our fans have not seen how important he is. Basically since our arrival in the prem he's been accused of being passed it, no pace, can't score from open play etc etc. For me aside from Lallana he remains our best player. It's not just the goals, he is absolutely integral to out tactics in assists link ups holding the ball etc. if he wanted to go to his boyhood club - he deserves it and us setting an undervalued fee as a reward makes sense. If however we think this is good business, well losing your top goal maker and second top scorer, an England international who has scored 28 prem goals in the last 2 seasons for 4m simply isn't, he's got at least 2 more seasons in him at his current level. I'll state this - we will not find a fwd for next season with as much influence no matter what we bid. Good luck SRL - one of the best players I have seen at saints (and I'm 39 !).

Who will take our penalties now?

Very good point, think how many extra points we've gained through his spot kicks. Every time we've had a penalty with him playing, you know it's a guaranteed goal. As for next season? There's too much to be worrying about, but my guess is David McGoldrick after we resign him once Mick McCarthy is appointed as our new manager. Exciting times ahead

I'm very sad to see him go. I'm not sure £4 Million was enough. He has been central to the way we play for the last 5 seasons.

However, if he clearly want to go and warm the bench at Liverpool then he deserves his chance.

If he has a good next 2 seasons and we get relegated then we will look back on this as a massive mistake, however, if we push onwards and carry on as a good competative prem side then we might view it as making a little money from a good servant at the end of his career.

I wonder....

If a new manager came in, didn't fancy SRL and sold him, new managers would be instantly unpopular.

By selling before the new manager arrives, have the board spared the new man from having to make an unpopular decision?

Who wouldn't fancy him though?! Top player and a model pro off the pitch.

FarehamRed makes a good point, Krueger takes any flak over this sale, the last thing a new manager would want to start his new job with would be selling a legend or a clearout.

See the case of Clough v Leeds fans.

Either way, I still love Rickie - and in geography news, Fareham is red and white!

We were calling for him to be replaced last year, whilst I think that he certainly has a future as a no.10 for a couple of years I dont think itll be that damaging for us, certainly no more near as damaging as losing Lallana.

4m is low though, Id rather thr upfront costs were higher, 9m is a good fee. Fair play to him, he deserves his chance. Its more what it spells out for us I think rather then actually losing him.

Seems the board have zero grasp on what the fans at this club feel

No we were not, but you were along with one or two others on here. It really was a minority view as I have never met a Saints fan who regularly watches us home and away who doesn't realise how important Rickie Lambert is to the team and how we play.

Hodgey summed it up perfectly for me. Top post lad!
