Supporter Relations Manager

I saw the giant word 'Vacancy' on the official Saints site and for a moment thought we'd been reduced to hiring a MoPo replacement online. Hope we don't end up advertising for open try-outs for the team next!

Anyway, what do you make of this job? Is it a move to improve communications between the club and the fans, or an official spokesman who'll be expected to toe the party line?

It'll be a thankless job, mainly to field all the dinlows moans about the quality of the pasties, queues in the concourses at half time etc as well as listen to all the fans brilliant suggestions of how to improve their match day experience by giving them free beer for every ticket/programme/pie/bit of merchandise bought.

I think it is a requirement for all PL clubs to have a Supporter Liaison Officer, and it is something they have had in Germany for some time. Whether it is of any use or not, depends of the attitude towards the SLO that the club has.

Could be a really useful way of having dialogue on ticket prices, travel, stewarding etc, but will probably about Pies, Beer and Car Park charges.

Absolutely.

Pompey tried it with fans champion Micah Hall appointed as engagement manager, or some such guff title. This was a man who was lauded for bringing down Chainrai and being instrumental in their Trust getting ownership. With just a few short weeks he was regularly getting pelters from all sides regarding all manner of trivial nonsense. I believe I read that at one point he was off on long term leave for stress from it.

It's nice to think that the club want to listen, and I guess it's laudable that they're employing someone just to tune in to a bunch of know it all dinlos. But you'd have to have the thickest of thick skin to put up with what will be and endless source of whining and criticism.

A tellralph@saintsfc email address would be much more useful

Fans: "Why haven't you told us what is going on?!?!"

SRM: "There's nothing to tell you ladies and gents, nothing has happened."

Fans: "Well, why havn't you told us that nothing is happening, since the last time you told us nothing has happened."

and so on.

Not to mention the utterly banal and trivial stuff (as alluded to above) that will take up the majority of the day.

"There was no toilet roll in this toilet"

"The shop ran out of kitkats at HT"

"The paint was coming off in the turnstiles"

"It was too cold when I was sat watching the game"

"My tea was too hot"

Christ, you'd have to be some sort of masochist. I'd lose patience and spaz out pretty darn quick in that role.

Nobody does whining quite like a Saints fan, so sod that. I guess it's due to our middle aged/old support base.

I dunno mate, I reckon it's probably more of a British/Football fan trait. I'm sure we're about the same as every club.

I imagine all clubs face similar problems in that respect.
