Saints v Forest - Post match reaction

I have no doubt that many were the same bloody idiots that kicked up a fuss and stopped the appointment of Glenn Hoddle in 2004 and started this sorry saga !

To suggest our sorry state started simply because we didn't appoint Glen Hoddle is rather ridiculous...

For the first time this season I believe that a) we are down & b) Jan has to go. Clueless, aimless, hopeless. Two comments from those around me today - firstly a young lad of about ten sat behind me - 'Dad, why don't they take number 15 (Euell) off. He's completely useless,' and two Nottm Forest fans talking - 1st fan 'We played really well today.' 2nd fan - 'Mind you, Southampton were truly shocking.'

Why shouldn't STH's mock the plastics? I spent most of the 2nd half doing so. ( and if that mong who thought he could offer out the Northam at the end of the game when walking out is watching, you are a c*nt and hopefully you won't be back again )

At the end of the day, if we had crowds like that every week, we would have money to spend and not be going broke.

"Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrradley Wright-Phillips, he hates plastic fans"

Let me guess: you get ******ed up and go with mates, and scarcely see what's going on on the pitch. to you its a "day out on the ******", and oif you can mock any****er you like then so much the better.

Very, very nice fan. Sorry don't live up to your standards

Southampton Football Club is unfit for purpose, plain and simple. That performance was an insult to all the fans, season ticket holders or not, who paid to watch it. Any Lowe, Wilde and/or Poortvliet apologists who watched today's game and still believe that they/he are taking the club in the right direction are deluding themselves.

PATHETIC...is the only word i can find close enough to

describe the performance, the coach, most of the players and the board.

If this continues we are as good as relegated.

Something has to be done to stop the rot.....now!!!!!

But...it WAS the catalyst that began our downturn. It was at this point that we begin to make a catallogue of errors. PS had lost the dressing room before he even got inside the club and did not have the ability to gain the respect of the players.

No doubt in my mind that if we had appointed GH we would have stayed in the PREM

The trouble with today's result is it doesn't surprise me any more. Half a season gone, the experiment has failed (dismally), it's time to change tactics.

I can honestly say that was one of the worst performances I have see Saints put in. The crowd were very up for it at the start and I thought it would have reflected on the players. We started ok up to about 20 minutes, but even then apart from Surman hitting the post, we didnt create one serious opening. Nothing. After that they totally lost the crowd. They looked like they were going to score from every single corner and although I don't think they deserved to be in the lead at half time (as they were pretty poor too) we certainly didn't.

McGoldrick was absoloutely abysmal and can't believe he stayed on for as long as he did. No mistakes about it, we deserved to lose today, we just had nothing at all upfront.

There were a few times where we had the ball in the middle and not one of thier centre backs was marking a player - how are we ever going to look a threat twhen thier defence has nothing to do ?

We are supposed to be playing with width, yet when our full backs have the ball there is no-one down the line, seems like somehting that should be done too.

Our corners were pretty lame too.

It was a pretty bad day all round, I haven't left early in amatch before but I did today, we were never going to win that one !

I was so wound up I forgot to rate the players

Davis - 5 Almost a stinker. A couple of great saves but at least partially to blame for the goals and couldn't hold onto the ball for his life in the second half.

James 5.5 -Not the greatest defensively, but I still think he is OK and as much of our creative play came through him as anyone

Skacel - 4 - because I expect better from him. Defensively wanting at times and a worse crosser of the ball than James

Perry - 5 - okay, just. Hideously at fault for the goal and nearly gave away one earlier

Pearce -4.5 - not the worst, but not good

Cork - 6 - our best player, kept plugging away when heads were dropping around him. Why the hell would he want to stay past next week?

Surman -5 - not dominant enough, but those in front of him never seemed as alert as he was

Lallana - 4 -you need more than twinkle-toes, I'm afraid. Found wanting physically and mentally today

Holmes - 5 - generous score because he looked a bit like a player who's been out for three months

Euell - 2 - pathetic. As bad as any game he played last season. Not a right winger, not a striker, not a player in the hole. To think he earns half the average year's wages for for that display...

McGoldrick - 3 - I think he tried, but he never managed a shot on goal all game.

Wright-Phillips - 4 - back to his clueless worst

Gasmi - 2.5 - was he playing? Oh yes, I saw him dive once and complain to the ref

Poortvliet - 1 - got it all wrong today. It was the kind of display today that finishes manager's careers. I am struggling to take a single positive from today's performance. They had a team full of youngsters, too, but they were quicker, more alert, more determined than we were and they looked better than us in all departments.

Posted

One other point, todays side really wasn't THAT inexperienced.

Only James and Lallana have less than half a season's league football behind them.(not sure about Pearce).

We simply re nowhere near good enough.

My prediction- Unless something drastic happens, the away wins will dry up, and our quite awful home form and results will send us down.

Forest were a lot better than us, and they are clearly a mid table team at best.

I ALWAYS look forward to the next game (hope springs eternal) but £24 to turn up at the Reading game is a big ask.

This love affair we have with SFC is a very one way thing tonight.

(PS since I missed the Norwich game, I have got to Xmas without seeing a home win- never thought I would wsee that particular day)!!!!!!!!!!

Off now to choose between Bally, Steve Williams and Armstrong for the all time team. Sigh.

Interesting...

And in and around that wonderful observation did you ever think that his leaving in the first place had any effect either?? Ok so it gave us Strachan but that was more luck than judgement.

Hoddle is absolved of any contribution to our decline whatsoever?

Whatever...

Get a long ball merchant in to manage and some big ugly buggers in the middle, a target man up top a-la Steve Howard/Kevin Davies and lets bully our way out of trouble?

Oh and a couple of full backs would be nice?

What you half wits do not realise is, being judgemental and bitter that people did not come for Man U tickets they came bacause they cannot afford to come more often but they are actually loyal Saints fans trying to make ends meet with family priorities. Whilst you no doubt, are iether lucky enough to be a millionaire or quite wealthy. Yes some of these people will stretch to the Man U game but lets welcome them and applaud them for finding the money to attend.

Let me assure you that this football club could not survive on your money alone mate. The team needs these extra 14,000 every game so we need to encourage them back or, you lucky wealthy ONE THIRD of the 32,000 of the people who would like to come every week will get what you deserve. You are not special people you are just a few random people who can afford to go when you like!!

Calm down and embrace your fellow supporters or stay at home that's my advice!

Today's match performance was totally unacceptable and had it cost me £48 instead of £30 for me and my son, I would have been even more angry than I am. As it was, I had to sit in the Itchen for the first time as I couldn't get tickets together in the Northam. If there is a stand called the Chapel, then we should rename the Itchen the Morgue. We tried to get some chants going in support of the small band of true supporters in the top corner and got the sort of looks one gets for farting loudly in front of your maiden aunt.

As for the match, some things have become patently obvious.

Poortvliet is way out of his depth and should go, along with his fellow countrymen.

McGoldrick is just not up to being the front man and should be placed in the reserves for as many matches as it takes for him to improve his ability, his confidence and his attitude.

We should throw out the Dutch total football and revert back to a system that is more appropriate to the game played in this country and at this level.

Lowe should resign as chairman and if he won't, his boardroom colleagues should tell him that his time is up. Whilst he remains, there will never be the unity required to fight ourselves out of thi mess.

I will be at the AGM on Tuesday and for once, instead of the usual dull affair that it is, I sincerely hope that Lowe is strongly taken to account for dismissing a young and able English manager and replacing him with somebody with no experience of football in this country and at this level.

Just got back in to my flat here in Brighton. Long day. Crap football... where do I start??

Well here's one facking tip for matey Poortvliet: given that a corner is a set f\/cking piece - and therefore totally f\/cking practisable at f\/cking Marchwood - do you think it might not be with in the bounds of a half-f\/cking decent football manager to get the f\/cking kid who's job it is to kick the f\/cking football from the corner flag AT LEAST OVER THE F\/CKING HEADS OF THE F\/CKING NEAREST OPPOSITION PLAYER ???????????

F\/ck me. TWO F@CKING YEARS NOW AND WE CAN'T EVEN TAKE A FRIGGIN CORNER????? ??? ??? ?? ? ? ?? ? ? ? ? ? ?

I have more, I need a breather....

Just a dreadfully boring game as far as Saints were concerned, cluster of players in midfield not looking to do anything with the ball except play it sideways or backwards, no shots, no vision, no ideas. I just kept looking at the clock to see when the game would finish and it dragged on and on. I won't be going again, I feel robbed even for £15.

Posted

I came away from the game knowing that I would be watching League 1 football next season. In previous relegation battles there have been players that were prepared to scrap for points. The heads went down 30 minutes from the end of today's game, even before Forest's second goal. I can't see this group of youngsters and old players having the fight. Just when we thought that it couldn't get worse than last season, it has.

Posted

Really ****ed off today! but mainly with the supporters! Although it appears that not all the players put in a full 90 minutes worth of commitment, in my opinion the players are not the main blame for the situation we find oursleves in.

The people that annoyed me mostly today were the people tat call themsleves 'fans' or supporters of SFC, which sat around me in the huhum Kingsland block 35 today! first time ive sat ther during a competitive game! Sat in Northam every game for last 5 years, this is the first year i havnt had a season ticket as at uni,a ltho anly missed 2 games, (although this is not the point) My mate was supposed to get me a ticket but told me last ngt hed 4goten so i had to get one, but Northam was sold out!

The atmosphere wasnt the best considering the attendance at all! But the silent fans around me had the cheek to moan about northam singing 'swing lowe' even tho for the rest of the game they get behind the team every game. Then when we concede they start slating the team and booing ect! Excpet from the minority that sing plus the Northam, from my experienec today, the average SFC fan gets what they deserve from the players performance.

The players say that they prefer to play away from home, as the home atmosphere is too nervous and negative. This is not that clear from the middle of the Northam but i agree after today!

I also agree that people that pay the money to watch SFC deserve their opinion and to sing or sit in silenece as they wish, as well as critcise the players when they feel they deserve it. But FFS most are just kids still, they do try and play a style of football which is attractive but not affective most of the time in getting results, this is not their fault in a big way, so lets try and get behind them, judge them after the game has finished, trya dn create a positive motivational atmosphere during the 90 minutes!

One home win all season says it all!

COYR! BACK TO THE NORTHAM FOR READING!

Posted

For the love of god, please can we banish any "We beat Reading away" talk from the official site. Our team seem to still be dining out on that one. Today was pathetic. One win in twelve says it all. A team of a) youngsters who are afraid b) those who fancy a move in January c) over the hill journeymen and d) clueless manager = relegation. If only those players knew how much it hurts. Proud to be a Saint.

Absolute crap I was going to go to the game but decided against a 300 mile round trip and how glad I am that I didn't Jan must go now or we'll be down sooner rather than later and no i'm not going on boxing day and thats only a 40 mile round trip merry xmas rupert you've ruined mine already

Having calmed down a bit, I must state that there was one bright spot today that made the expenditure of £30 almost worthwhile.

That Forest goal scored by lobbing Kelvin was absolutely sublime. A moment of genius worthy of Beckham and quite possibly the first division goal of the season. I was privileged to be there to witness it.

The rest of the match was pure sh*t and better forgotten, although I will quite happily point to this game if any of the happy clappy brigade think that our youngsters are better for their attitude and commitment than last season's players. Forest proved with a younger team than ours that youngsters don't have to be a push over if they have commitment and skill. Unfortunately most of ours don't.

Another bonus of today is that any scouts watching might have deduced that the better players amongst our youngsters aren't really up to the standard that they require, so those like me worried that we might lose them can console ourselves that we might get to keep them after all. :)

As a previous Lowe suporter I am afraid to admit that yes this performance was an insult. Three of us from our family were there and we were all just flabergasted by the clueless performance. There now needs to be a radical change of direction. The defence is appauling - who is coaching this area????? At every set piece we either concede or are just about get away with it - we are shocking in this department. Who ever is coaching the defence shoud be sacked NOW. He is not doing a good enough job.

Who picked Euell today - he was either not fit or playing so poorly should have been heaved off after 30 mins. McGoldrick whilst having neat control has no awareness of where the ball may go so is never in a scoring situation in the box - this will not change but he will not score he just does not have the awareness.

Nobody is making runs in the box - NOBODY !!!!!

After all this time if things as basic as this are not being sorted then they never will be. There is a lot of burying heads in sand going on at senior management level in this club and this is severly hampering any chance of progress.

One massive difference between the two teams again today was size of players. We were just brushed aside by the much larger built Forest players today. You just have to be over 6' and fourteen stone to play in this league that is fundamental !

...well now that I have had my breather and am happily half-way through my last can of Strongbow I'll bore you with my thoughts about the game:

Jan is being interviewed on Radio Hampshire now. I feel very sorry for him, because I believe he does know what he's doing, but he's being handcuffed by the finances, and the players at his disposal. But he wants to impose a system on players who don't seem to know how to play as a team, the way he wants them to.

I've just heard him admit that he doesn't know what to do regarding where the goals are going to come from. For me, that's enough. As a manager, you should never not know what to do.

But if Poortvliet has to go, then Rupert and Co has to go too.

JP was talking jibberish. He thought we played better than them most of the time, that our only problem was (apart from the odd lapse of concentration) up front.

Forest were a younger team than us - and they dictated most of the time.

We let in a chip from 40 yards. We give them a free header from 6 yards. KD saved us 3 times. They over-ran a one on one. On another day it could have been 1-6.

I said right at the start of the season Lowe would change direction in November. I think I will be about 3-4 weeks out. He HAS to change direction otherwise the crowd will be down to 12k, and we go broke. A change will at least renew some optimism, and bring back some of the crowd.

You're a complete and utter tw*t. Get it into your stupid head that if you want this club to survive you have to appeal to people who want to pick and chose what to spend their money on. It doesn't matter a toss why they came today. This team had the chance to convince them it is worth coming back again, to see them, not just to see MU. And they stupendously failed to do it.

I trust you will enjoy yourself effin and blinding in an empty terrace at absent people who have the temerity to show they want value for money. And entertainment and commitment, and skill and application from PROFESSIONAL footballers.

But yeah, f*ck them, who needs 'em. They aren't real fans like you.

We are going into admin after today. 10k extra fans will not even pay £15 to watch that. We have to face facts. The team i watched today were a long long way off being good enough for this league. I am certain we are in League 1 next year unless we throw the boat out and get a proper manager in. I really wanted Jan to succeed playing classy dutch football but that dream is over and we need to get someone in now who can get us back up once the inevitable happens.

Posted

Here I go again, but we have done it again.

McGoldrick must be left out, in the first half he had three attempted shots, once missed the ball completely, twice just managed to make contact then backheeled a through ball to the only defender. He was APPALLING.

Lallana did it again today, picked wide right, hardly ever there, in the first half Euell went out there and covered for him. He was HOPELESS. quick feet, good ball control, absolutely no end product, and completely buggered the teams shape in both attack and defence.

Attack:- By having nobody wide right, we were lopsided, allowed the defence to be narrow and get loads of players goalside. Our attacks were slow and ponderous, no penetration whatsoever.

Defence:- Because James had to try and get forward into the empty right. there was a massive gap on our right behind him. As soon as the move broke down we were short at the back, the two centre backs pulled over, the nearest defenders trying to get back and nobody defending our left side. This stretching of our defence makes us extremely vulnerable to counterattack.

Lallana needs dropping. Dyer didn't play badly for Sheff Utd and scored a good goal. We don't need Robertson or Pekart, get him back for starters. Maybe consider Skacel as support striker.

Did the players train at all this week as I was told they had time off but not sure I believed this but after seeing the game today it looked like they havent trained at all this season.

My teenage son went to see Exeter City win 4-1, and is over the moon. Used to be an ardent Saints fan until he wanted a team he could support every week - and two Wembley appearances have proved him right.

I listened to Radio Hampshire and LOL'ed at the live mic moments - better than the commercials they were supposed to be playing. And having supported saints on the terraces since '62 - all home matches from '73 into the '80's when I moved away, could only inwardly weep at their incomptence. Where is the club that used to be? Where is the Saints we loved week in, week out.

Son says Exeter will be playing Saints in the League next season - I fear he could be right!

He still wants to see the Man U game. I'm dreading it! He wants to wear his Exeter shirt - and try to say that they at least they drew. I fear a lynching - or perhaps a resigned acknowledgment that he is right.

This point has actually accurred to me on a few occasions over the course of the last couple of weeks. Why we are worrying about losing any of this team (apart from KD) is quite frankly baffling to me. Let's face it, none of the players are actually setting the world on fire - we havn't scored in donkeys years and we look miles away from actually being able to win a game.

It wasn't too many months ago when many posters on here were telling us just how wonderful our young players are and that they would easily compete in this league - where are those posters now - strangely silent.

The problem we have now is - not many of our youth appear to be putting up a case for 'promotion' to bigger clubs, and our proven goalscorers are out on loan and probably to expensive to play. We are stuck with these youth players who appear to be wildly out of their depth at this level - the future is bleak to say the least.

That's the ******* spirit! Well done matey, s\/ck my c0kk. I am a member of a football CLUB... Pick and Choose you say? F\/ck off you c_u_n_t. If you support saints, then get there and support the lads come rain or shine or f\/ck off and sign up to PLC Britain and its f\/cked up for-profit duck-hunting way of life. Not for me you f@cking piece of sh!t. Once a MEMBER of Southampton FC, forever a MEMBER. Not a shareholder: A MEMBER. Our club. Not f\/cking Lowe's. Not anyone's expect for the people who take time out of their week to SUPPORT their football CLUB because they know that it is not about television cameras or 'celebrity football stars' but about a fundamental and worthy part of the City of Southampton's heart.

Now don't go crying little 'cause I swore at you! There is more to life, and more to a football club than pure f\/cking pound notes in Rupert's pockets.

as far as i'm aware the deal with being able to buy early if you buy a forest ticket is only really for members so i don't know why you are getting in a such a fuss

its pathetic that instead of supporting the team at matches we are fighting among each other

i probably won't be at the man u game coz i'm not a member or a season ticket holder but have only missed 2 games this season. im glad im not going if i will have to listen to 90 minutes of snobby supporters proving how much better they are than the supporter next to them.

I actually agree whole heartedley with your sentiments. Unfortunately your point is going to be lost on most due, mainly, to the crass manner in which you have chosen to air it.

You appear to have some anger issues which may benefit from professional help, and if successful might help you to convey your points in a more appropriate manner.

I don't care about proving how 'good' a supporter I am. I know how good a supporter I am. I do care that all a sudden there has been a renewed interest in being at SMS for 90 minutes on a December afternoon. Funny eh? Excellent that the club is now due a big pay day because the big swinging-dicks from the Golden Premier League are coming to play. Hoorah!

What I object to is that people who say they 'support' SFC only come out when the cameras are turned on the pretty boys from the top-flight. There are 32,000 odd seats at SMS. All of this season there has been barely half of them filled. Suddenly today SMS is full, all but. So where are these 'supporters' for the rest of the season? Probably back at home watching a SKY tv game. Crap.
