The big opportunity missed…or taken

So, here we are apparently at a big moment, and this summer to me, is the biggest moment we've had as a football club for 5 years.

I think we are genuinely 4 players from being able to compete for Champion's League football and that this does not need to cost a massive amount of money (in football transfer terms) so long as we keep our best players. This is the opportunity before the current regime.

There is talk of maximising commercial opportunity and this needs to happen for certain. Cortese was not at all good here from reports and anecdotes, and so far, this board is unproven but one thing is abundantly clear and that success generates revenue and opens doors to international markets, as well as at home.

Therefore, if this new board is going to generate more money, then the vision has to be for success, and given that we are so close to even bigger success with a great, and importantly, young team with great team spirit led by a brilliant young manager, this should make sense to everyone at the club.

Are our leadership team going to squander this once in a generation opportunity to create something truly special or are they going to embrace it, and invest in the next stage knowing that a return is as good as guaranteed in football terms? Obviously, we have no idea what is going on, and this is not a demand for more information but I hope, as a fan, that we do choose to do something different and change the face of British football in this era by becoming a great team that isn't just built by spending lots of money. Surely, the football public globally will have massive respect for that if we were to pull it off. The money will then follow, and given the huge TV deals nationally and globally, the return on investment would be quick and sustainable.

I for one can't believe that bright and leading business individuals would miss the open goal that is staring them in the face. This is their time to lead and earn their crust. Anyone can cut costs, it takes more to do build. Fingers crossed that there things are being put in place that mean we sit at the top table for quite a few years to come.

I think it would take more than 4 new players to make it to CL and to keep the players we have but also invest another 30-50m is not fair to be expected of KL. I would be happy for the club to keep the manager and sell the 2 but to reinvest some of the incoming funds on replacements. At present it seems we are getting the worst of all worlds

Really ? Liverpool finished 7th last season, miles short of the title, but we all saw how close they got this year. The new signings that made the difference were Sturridge, Coutinho and Mignolet. Other than that it was basically the same squad as the year before. What they did have was a good, progressive manager, good young prospects coming through from their youth team (Sterling, Flanagan) and no European distractions. It can be done.

My post wasn't a dig at the current board as I am sure they are still making plans. It's more of a hope that, unlike in 2003 when our last opportunity to push on was there, we failed and ended up failing in big way. I am hopeful that internationally respected leaders and business-people will have more of a grasp of the opportunity before them, and that the investment can be recouped - £50m would be covered by one year of TV alone now, and am happy to give them time to demonstrate this. Players looking at us now will also see an opportunity if we keep the players, and keep Poch.

With regard to the players, i think we only really need:

A back-up or challenging GK (£5m perhaps)

A centre-back (£10m tops)

An attacking/creative midfielder - and only if Gaston starts performing and AL doesn't leave (£15m)

A forward or two (£20m)

Do you know when the big opportunity was actually missed?

15th Feb, 2014.

We ****ed away a chance to actually win something, in favour of the race to finish 8th. The manager and most of the players are all being linked with big clubs for big money, so as we all knew - we have a hell of a lot of class here, so ****ing away the chance to win something with what will be our best 11 in decades is the opportunity that was missed.

Totally agree with that!

As for being four players off the champions league just because Liverpool did similar last year pull the other one the team they had to build on was packed with internationals and had England's best midfielder in a generation at it's heart and arguably the worlds best striker already on the books hardly comparable to us.

Far too many similar threads. I think it's quite clear that the 'project' has come to an end. We need to accept we will never finish higher than 8th or compete is Europe. Sad, but true. I fear that there is no vision for success, but simply for the club to cement its position as a mid-table side. We can talk about the FA Cup defeat all day long, but we were still a mile away from winning it. Funny thing is, I cant help but think that a further run in the cup might have had a negative impact on our league form and perhaps taken some of our players out of the spotlight. The saddest part of the season just gone is that we have become victims of our own success. We are going to get bullied by other clubs in the transfer market now having missed out on Europe. I can't help but think it is the worst thing to happen to us in recent years. We're meant to look at it as a successful season. Call me a bed wetter, pessimist or whatever but we will look back on this season in a few years as the beginning of the end

If players leave, my feeling towards that defeat will sour as I tend to agree with you, if players stay of course then we have the same chance this year.

wow, I'd keep away from heights, trees with rope, fast cars and drugs if I were you. I can't wait for all the I told you so threads from which ever opinion just so happens to be correct.

"Anyone can cut costs, it takes more to do build." ... and there are many ways to do both and f**k it up. It's how it's done that is important. Cortese is being judged on five years and an easier achievement from bottom of League One to 8th in the Premier League. The new board are being judged to improve on that and have only had a few months to assess the situation. Hardly fair at this current time.

why are all these stressed types coming on and bleating about new signings / sellings?.....what do they expect? Not every business deal is done by a handshake, over a dinner and a glass of plonk .

Should Les Reed give a press conference every time we get an enquiry about a player?......or comment on offers we've had .....or refused?.........I think not. it's all too ridiculous for words.

As each day goes by, one or two of our contributors are becoming more paranoiac by the hour...chill out:suspicious:. As soon as decisions are finalised we'll hear about it.

No sensible organisation would talk about ongoing discussions / negotiations ....until the ink was dry on the contract (though some do). Cortese had the right idea there.

As someone who recalls the huge surprise that everyone had when we signed Kevín Keegan. I much prefer that scenario than the " has Skacel signed yet" saga which was an absolute farce.
