What Clubs / Players Have Survived The Big Four Approaches

Without a single player having left, our new board seem to have come in for an awful lot of stick with regard to player sales and how they are handling things.

For all we know old Ralph might have bigger balls than Buster Gonad and is simply telling the players and clubs to do one.

But regardless of how they are performing, what they are or aren't doing, what Club / players have ever survived an approach from one of the big four?

I can only think of Leighton Baines.

I'm sure I will be corrected by many other examples, but for those that are so ready to judge our lack of ambition, it might be interesting to see what the realities of the football hierarchical system actually look like.

I'm sure there have been a few that stayed for a while but then left after a few seasons. In all honestly I don't expect players to stay forever - and I reckon many people feel the same - just that leaving after one good season is a kick in the guts.

Not quite the answer you are looking for, but while it seems much more normal now, Liverpool did an amazing job of resisting Arsenal for Suarez a year ago. For quite some time it just looked inevitable -they could offer CL footie which he craved, Liverpool had missed out again, Arsenal had the £££ to pay and were keen to assemble a better squad. Liverpool were unbelievably robust in their resistance and hey ho, he stayed.

Ok they are a huge club with big resources, so its not the same as us, but they still did an amazing job of hanging onto one of the best strikers in the world

Liverpool also took quite an amusing approach when it came to the £40m buyout clause that Suarez had in his contract - their attitude was "well, players don't seem to be too keen to honour contracts they sign these days, so why should we bother honouring this one?". Ballsy, legally dubious, and could easily have blown up in their faces if Suarez had dug his heels in, but it ultimately had the desired effect.

You can even win La Liga and get to the Champions League final and end up selling your best players.

Imagine what their message board must be like? Perhaps we should send some our WuMs over to them. They can concentrate on getting upset on the lack of ambition of the board without having to worry about whether the team will play in traditional stripes.

We'll never know. I'm sure plenty are kept under wraps.

Don't be so naïve. when clubs turn down permission to speak to the players............ You get what we have had for the last couple of weeks.

The LAST thing they ever do is keep it under wraps

Maybe it's different in the Premier League or when the top clubs get involved because the players are more newsworthy, but there are plenty of enquiries which never make it to the press.
