  1. 1. Who do you want as manager?

Why?

contrary to the mass flow I actually think he did a decent job at Brighton and again at Sunderland. Sorting out the mess Di Canio left wasn't easy I'd think but he got them to safety with some decent performances.

http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/478314/Poyet-Lennon-and-Petrescu-in-frame-to-be-new-Saints-boss-as-Spurs-close-in-on-Pochettino

Poyet, Lennon and Petrescu in frame apparently according to the Express. Petrescu's name has been lingering around like a bad smell for a few months - reminds me very much of how Krueger's name was eased into the frame as eventual Chairman. Please God, no.

Isn't it terrible that Poyet looks like the best option out of those three?

That article isn't based on what the Express knows, throughout they are just referring to the Ladbrokes odds in the next Southampton manager market.

Malky McKay, AVB, Di Matteo, Kevin Keegan, Nigel Adkins, Rafa Benitez, David Moyes I'd be happy with one of them.

Steve McClaren, Gordon Strachen, Mick McCarthey, that Oscar guy who left Brighton - I'd put them all on the "Wouldn't mind but could do slightly better" list

Dario Gradi, Iain Dowie, Alan Curbishley, Tim Shearwood, Billy Davies, Paul Jewell are all on the "absolutely no chuffin way" list

Poyet is the last person I would hire - decent record as a manager but he's a complete odious c*nt.

If Poch is off there are candidates to replace him, but nobody who will rock the boat and upset the good team spirit we have (currently).

Steve McClaren for me. He has a few blots on his record but so do most. Winning titles in Holland with FC Twente is more than a good effort! Took Boro into a European final as well.

Unfortunately people will struggle to look past his time as England manager. Just keep the brollies away from him.

Boro fans were delighted he got the England job in the same way we were when Burley got the Scotland one.

No thanks, never trust a man who tries to cover up his baldness.

Steve Evans, the new Billy Davies? Who else has spearheaded back to back promotions - the anyone-but-Cortese brigade inform us that Nige was simply bankrolled.

Evans would be superb for the pie eating training regime, the false accounting of players salaries and the hard abuse of opposing players and officials. Not to mention he'd get to show his tapered little cock on MOTD instead of to some poor lass who works for Rochdale. Japes a-plenty, don't get me wrong, but about as good a fit to "the southampton way" as Rolf Harris in a school governors chair.

I meant it in jest (see St. Charlie's original post), though your joke was funnier than mine ;)

Seriously would not want McKay, McClaren, McCarthy anywhere near this club - all very much at home in the Championship, not as a manager of a top 8 PL side...

Couldn't give a toss about his england record, I judge him for Boro, Wolsburg and Forest.

But completely ignore what he done with FC Twente and now at Derby? Few resources and bringing through young English talent with some success? Where's the logic in ignoring that?

I would imagine we are a very attractive project for the right manager,as long as they believe in bringing through the youth and can attract decent players I genuinely think we can attract someone bigger than MP

No one has mentioned Paul Lambert.

Before I get a shellacking, I know it is hard to look past his possession stats with Villa and see him as an ideal fit based on our own brand of football this season.

However, I do feel he has been dealt a really bad hand at Villa and not spent a great deal of money with a lot of restrictions placed on him in terms of lowering the wage bill. Some of his signings have been dodgy - though partly due to the markets he was shopping in - but then he also the ability to spot a gem like Benteke.

I thought he actually had Norwich playing some decent football in the PL before he left. When Weimann, Benteke, and Abonglahor have all been fit and have started together (quite rare this season) they have also looked quite exciting going forward. Villa have had one of the youngest first teams this season and I could definitely see Lambert maintaining our commitment to blooding youngsters from the academy.

He's obviously much more of a pragmatist than the likes of Poch and we'd probably have to get adjust to a lesser brand of football, but the guy has a Champions League winners medal and seems to earn the respect of his players. The uncertainty with their ownership might present us with a chance...and I reckon we could do a lot worse based on candidates currently under discussion.

I think we. Will be OK but a betting man might be looking at relegation odds. They would be quite favourable now but by September they may have shortened quite a bit.

We feel pretty cheesed of can u imagine the morale of the squad as well. They can't have too much faith in the new board as they have left a few players high and dry.

My friend who worked at the club and was n the dressing room under Pardew told me the other day that when Reed arrived it was commented that 'he's come to take my job again' Wonder what the odds for Reed to be the man for a spell lol

And that's probably for a good reason, we don't want him here.

Hmmm I can't think why.

Agree that he is by no means a perfect fit, but at least an experienced PL manager who is committed to playing young players.

People are happy to offer the likes of Rosler and Howe but with little evidence that they could make the step-up to Premier League management. Some managers - the likes of Moyes or Lambert - are probably a bit unfairly tarnished with their experience at one club.

If the club can't keep hold of Pochettino I doubt they have the ambition to buy a good manager out of a contract at another club - so it will be someone who is already out of a job - or at club lower down the leagues

The favourites must be Lennon, Petrescu and Oscar Garcia

I'd have Adkins back but why would he leave Reading - a club who are just about to be bought by a billionaire - all be it a Chelsea fan

What worries me is if Pochettino does go Lallana, Shaw, Schneiderlin and Lovren will almost certainly follow hm out of the door for Champions League football

And I imagine Fonte and Cork won't sign new contracts so I expect they'll go as well as the club tries to cash in on them when they still have a year on their contracts

Wanyama, Clyne and Rodriguez will probably want out as well - to bigger, better and more ambitious clubs

I expect Lennon will want the job - and perhaps his only saving grace is he'll keep Wanyama happy and maybe bring Fraser Forster with him

Still it could be worse we could be Norwich I suppose

I'd prefer Adkins to the other three you mention.

Please not McKay or Moyes, truly awful fits for saints as is Benitez but he'd never come anyhow.

If they go domestic Sherwood, Lennon, di Matteo or Adkins would be the ones that think best suit style/youth emphasis.

I've said it twice and I'll say it again.

Eddie Howe will be the next Saints manager.

Howe is a good shout. Has overachieved massively at Bournemouth and has probably taken them as far as they can go. Intelligent, articulate, forward thinking and his teams play on the floor.

christ i hope not - we'll be back in the championship 12 months from now.

adkins showed us what zero prem experience achieves in the first half of the season.....add to that a new squad with the remnants of the team from the recent "glory" years and its got relegation written all over it

we need someone who can attract decent players and who knows how to handle top flight football - that ain't eddie howe

Benitez is probably the only one where his appointment would make most players want to stay and show real ambition.

Southampton is as nice as Naples right?

He's said he views Napoli as a 'stopgap' and wants to return to England. You have to assume he's been holding out for a top job but it doesn't look like he'll be getting one this summer. If Pochettino leaves for Spurs we're the best English job going but I doubt he's so desperate to come back to the PL that he'd join us.

Out of our league, sadly.

Eddie Howe has shades of Sturrock about him.

Murat Yakin could be a possibility

For me the realistic shortlist would be:

Domestic based managers:

Adkins

Howe

Imports:

Yakin

Tuchel.

All of which are gambles for one reason or another.

Moyes is the boring option, 13 years too late.

We're going to need a lot of transfers, so we either need a "name" or someone with an extensive knowledge of players, either domestically or abroad. Then we need someone who is a good man manager. Finally we need someone that plays an attractive style of football.
