  1. 1. Who do you want as manager?

Recommended Posts

Since leaving Old Trafford Moyes said he had received some "very good" job offers, but he added: "I may still choose to have a break and enjoy watching and observing football throughout the world."

Sounds like something any of us might say if we were suddenly unemployed with no good job prospects. Of course he has prospects, but that still sounds like he is defending his pride rather than stating any facts.

Thinks spurs are a bigger club, if he has a half decent season there and gets a chance at a CL club he'll leave spurs as well

Spot on

Marcoti was on the Times podcast, said Poch is extremely ambitious, really belives he can manage Real or Barca. The line was " you don't jump from Southampton to a big champions league club, but do well at spurs and you may do".

Well I think it was a good post, whereas yours is not - IMHO of course. Please tell me what the board are doing at the moment that smacks of incompetence? There may be plenty of reasons to think that in the coming weeks, but at the moment they are playing it quite well. Given the current situation, what would you have them do differently?

I would have expected them to do what Kruguer said they would do:

1. To retain all the key players.

2. Consult the new manager on any ins or outs;

3. This required them not to sell Lambert and to be able to explain to him why the move would not be in his, or Southampton's best interests;

4. Having broken their word on Lambert, I would have expected a further reminder to the press that this was treated as a special case, it would be the only exception, and no other key players would be sold without the agreement of the new manager.

The Heads in the Sanders are doing nothing to try to influence the Board not to break up the team, on the contrary too many of them happily clap everything the Board does, or fails to do.

I appreciate your IMHO, which mine is as well. The difference is that Lighthouse's post would encourage further sales.

This is one of the most sensible pieces I've read. Have to say, I'd rather have Moyes than Koeman. At least he brings Premiership experience. I can't help but feel that Koeman will be a flop. His track record is at best, average.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/southampton/10860028/David-Moyes-should-really-be-the-only-candidate-to-replace-Mauricio-Pochettino-as-Southampton-manager.html

My main problem with Moyes is not that he isn't a safe and highly competent manager ..it's just that he simply doesn't play the attacking football we've come to both expect and enjoy from Saints over the last few years. The first half at SMS against Manure is a typical example ...free flowing attacking football which was a joy to watch ...so yea....Moyes is safe and highly competent .. but is his style of football what we really want to see??

Also despite what that article says, I don't think Moyes has any real record with young players.

Phil Neville played instead of Barkley last year and any Manager would have played Rooney aged 16.

You could never say Moyes is a poor appointment, but I wouldn't be buzzing either.

I seem to remember Everton tearing us a new one at Goodison our first season back in the PL most of their threat coming from their full backs. Arguably in Coleman and Baines he had two of the most attacking full backs in the PL so I reckon he do alright with our full backs (assuming we tell man U to f off with regards to Shaw).

Sadly the Shaw bit unlikely... But who knows

Not really - were you there?

It's because we decided to spread our legs and play Jrod, Lambert, Ramirez, Lallana in a 4-4-2 with no real grit in midfield (Schneiderlin was out injured) and no apparent instructions for the wide men to cover the fullbacks. It was the one of the most naive team selections NA made in the prem. Never mind that Gazza was in goal. Anyone could have scored against us that day.

And they still hoofed it a hell of a lot.

Any idea when we will know?

This transparency from the Board is starting to look opaque :(

Most would condemn the board if they moved too fast as there is a thorough interview process to be gone through; if say 5 candidates were left with their hats in the ring the best two might be called back. So don't be impatient, as long as the appointment is made before the players return from hols and ready for training all should be well.

There is still also the obligatory close season trip to Switzerland to come, announcements of pre-season friendlies and the walk on hot coals that obviously spooked one or two of our guys to leave before they had to face the ordeal again this year. At least we find out who are the chickens.

Very good article and exactly my view. If we'd have got Moyes in when Adkins left it'd be lauded as a huge statement of intent.

I think well get Koeman and I'm fine with that, but I think Moyes would be the best man for the job.

IIRC we actually played Ramirez as a false 9, with Rickie and Jay either side and Lallana sitting alongside Cork (or was it Davis?) in the midfield. We were doomed from the start. Awful day out, couldn't see anything above the player's head height because of the weird away stand and the home fans were sh!t as well. Only redeeming feature was drinks before in The Arkles, which is a cracking pub.

Might have been, though Jrod basically started up top with Lambo (Jrod actually missed a great chance when we were 1up). Think JWP partnered Davis in the middle - not surprisingly we were outmuscled and overrun. The setup was all wrong. The mood wasn't helped by the locals who decided to play up as we were walking back to the station.

It was definitely an experimental line-up by NA, and one that really didn't work. And to think how confident I was when Gaston scored that header (Gaston, scoring a header!?).

They're an interesting lot though the Everton fans, the poor bloke who was running our coach kept getting calls on the way up giving him death threats from a bunch of Scouse lads. They called him when we were walking through the park as well from The Arkles to Goodison and scared the sh!t out of him by describing where the lot of us were walking through! All fart and no sh!t that lot though, most of their fans were either ancient or semi-foetal. Won't be rushing back there.

Cant wait to know who's going to use us as a stepping stone next.
to be honest I'm not too bothered being used as a stepping stone as it means we've done well, a manager can't move on to bigger and better things if he's been rubbish for us.

As opposed to the £15m which was plucked out of the air by Crabs?

There is no reason to think we wont spend or even exceed the value of any players we sell. Some people are just making up reasons to be negative.

Next we will be hearing about how Kruger shot Bambi's mother.

This, and the same 2 or 3 posters constant negativity is putting them up there into Barry-Alpine like status

I think many of us agree with you over Moyes, but you can't say Koeman's track record is average! He's a superb manager.

Even if the Board make a good appointment by the end of this week coming they are coming up against a number of logistical problems.

1. The World Cup starts on 12th June and we are now in the period where access to any players involved is going to be limited as most Managers will want to keep their players focused on the tournament. That only really ends in early July when the teams drop down to a few. But any complex transfers involving a multiple link of players and teams (think of a chain of house sales) could be held up by a player in the chain in the World Cup.

2. Players involved in the World Cup may not be willing to attend tests straight after - they may take 2 weeks leave. We could be at the end of July before some players are really willing to engage.

3. The season starts on Aug 16th. Of the teams rated on shorter odds than us for relegation only one of them is without a Manager. Our rivals have settled Managerial positions and Managers who know all of the players registered with that team. Our eventual appointment will have to get to know them sometime in late July/August.....

4. Yes there are players uninvolved mainly in the Championship. There are also those players at lesser teams in the PL, all of which have similar or better funding than us.

5. The window for transfers this year is congested and they will be leaning unfortunately on the judgement of Les Reed! Enough said.

6. So to summarise, it is highly likely that we will not have all the players on board that we need when the season starts. Think back to the effects of not having Boruc and Levron at the start of the 2012/13 season. All caused by not making a fast appointment with MP or even forcing his situation with Spurs before the season ended.

Dunno about that. You could say we weathered the storm. Appoint manager > world cup > pre-season > manager makes mind up on players ... oops season has started > manager sells players in January, Saints retain everyone. [oh and in the first few weeks manager reinforces the club with players he can attract in the off season]

Could work the other way - after all why were Liverpool so keen to try and force our hand over Lallana before the WC?

Fair enough. Personally, and at the risk of needing to eat my words when the new manager is appointed, I am quite happy with the way they have handled things thus far. They have been true to their word with regard to refusing to bow to pressure to sell before a manager is appointed (if they sell at all). I am disappointed about Lambert, but I understand the reasons for it. I also have no problem with Krueger or Reed for that matter as things stand. Believe me, my head is nowhere near the sand.

This will not affect solely Saints. All clubs looking to recruit players from World Cup squads - and that will include pretty much every PL club - will be in limbo.

There hasn't been a lot of business done since the end of the season, even among the top clubs.

Presumably they won't be able to integrate any players they sign until late July - possibly even later as the top clubs are likley to be chasing players from counties expected to make the latter stages of the World Cup.

If there is one peculiarity about World Cup summers it is that it pretty much plays havoc with every club's transfer ambitions.

Listened to the Press Pass on the radio earlier.

Paddy Barclay was adamant that since NC left there is a huge void at the club and despite sound bites, we have absolutely no leadership and direction from above.

And there is more choppy times in the next week or so

Tweet was sent to me no idea on the veracity or ID of the poster

Getting a bit sick of players acting like 10 year old schoolboys. Waaah! I want to go because my best fwend has gone. Waah! I want to go because that nice Italian man who talked to us has gone. Waaah! I want to go because our lovely best fwend who speaks spanish to the telly people for a big laugh has gone. Waaah! I want to go because those nasty old men are 'ignoring' my important phone calls after all I've done for them. Oh, and I want a load of money. Can you arrange please agent?

It's not only the board we should direct our criticism to.

Thankfully, it's rubbish.

Why? He has a superb managerial record.

He won 3 Bundesligas, 2 with Bayern, and one with Wolfsburg in 2009 for the first time in their history. here are the teams he's managed up to taking over at Fulham:

1995–1997 Hamburger SV

1997–1998 1. FC Nürnberg

1998–1999 Werder Bremen

1999–2001 Eintracht Frankfurt

2001–2004 VfB Stuttgart

2004–2007 Bayern Munich

2007–2009 VfL Wolfsburg

2009–2011 Schalke 04

2011–2012 VfL Wolfsburg

I think you're utterly mental if you don't think he's a good manager because he couldn't keep a **** Fulham team up.

It must be said that Fulham were probably THE worst team to come to SMS last season (which also exposed our sometime goal scoring deficiencies as 2-0 was not a fair reflection of the men vs boys)

Newcastle were worse in my opinion. Meulensteen screwed them and after that they had no chance.
