Andy Durman Posted 29 May, 2014 Share Posted 29 May, 2014 Why are a lot of you not getting it? When MP joined and when a lot of the new players signed it was through Cortese being chairman and selling the ambition which was champions league football. Since the daughters taken charge the ambition/five year plan has changed, it doesn't take an idiot to work that out, even small changes like cheap kit and sponsor, and soon to be the departure of Lallana, Shaw etc.. (Although I believe Shaw would always leave regardless) the new appointment of manager will also be underwhelming as they'll have seen the ambition and the transfer funds and realise it's a non starter, que Lennon or some turd from the championship We agree on one thing. The appointment will show the level of ambition.
Window Cleaner Posted 29 May, 2014 Share Posted 29 May, 2014 We agree on one thing. The appointment will show the level of ambition. the appointment and the recruitment package, not just the coach himself. More and more football managers are leaving clubs because they feel stiffled by the lack of serious funds for recruitment. It's why Zidane turned down Bordeaux, it's why Garde left Lyon. Managers want success as well as players.

Saint_Tony Posted 29 May, 2014 Share Posted 29 May, 2014 Benitez would be great. Whilst the chances of it happening are slim, it's a possibility. As has been mentioned, if he fancies a return to the PL what are his other options? We're not a big club, but if given a transfer budget he might want to take on the challenge

We're not a big club, but if given a transfer budget he might want to take on the challenge honestly I'd think that if we couldn't keep Mauricio we can't attract Benitez. See him as waiting for Villa myself when they eventually get a new rich owner or even QPR.

That's what it boils down to, maybe the ambition at some point was realistic, however now it isn't, resulting in the departure of MP and soon to be a couple of high profile players
Matthew Le God Posted 29 May, 2014 Share Posted 29 May, 2014 Why is there this belief than MP going means no ambition? Maybe he preferred spurs? Maybe they have the same ambition but are more likely to whoever it? Or just a bigger club? It's bizarre some people are taking it as some absolute statement of zero ambition. At the end of the day it's just the actions of one man who always said he'd question his future without Cortese. Assessments of ambition are only sensible based on the new manager, number of sales and sort of replacement signings made. Anything else right now is just gut reactions, paranoia and vitriol. I agree.

Many of us are still judging the board too early. MP has left, but that was to be expected. We don't know who the new manager will be and haven't lost any players. Saint Charlie Posted 29 May, 2014 Share Posted 29 May, 2014 Oscar Garcia mentioned again by the Echo. Would be awful if we get him. Surely not. But then again, he would probably agree to any remit to get a crack at PL, and can imagine him being heralded as a top class European Manager by the Board because he did well in Israel. Please note - I cannot divulge details of any talks he may have had with our board relating to our managerial vacancy because a) any discussions would've been confidential and b) all he said to me was 'hello'. Yep would be awful. They release good pr with 'highest quality managers' are interested in Saints job, then it's followed up by rumours of saints enquiring about a distinctly mediocre manager. Stooping to take a manager who largely failed in the division below and then walked away would be comically bad. Adkins finished a point behind him, if we're stooping down to that level. Its not the club that is bigging Garcia up in the media, it is most likely his agent talking to the press. I doubt Garcia is being seriously considered by Saints, he hasn't achieved anything of note in his managerial career and the Brighton owner in a recent interview raised a lot of concerns about him. Dr Who? Posted 29 May, 2014 Share Posted 29 May, 2014 Struggle to see why saints would even short list a mediocre former championship manager such as this. Window Cleaner Posted 29 May, 2014 Share Posted 29 May, 2014 People might doubt Zidane with no experience, but what a huge advantage in keeping Lallana, or anyone. 'Fancy training with Zidane every day?!'. Could be good or bad but there are certain marquee appointments that would help us keep players. Some names mentioned wouldn't do that, which puts them at a disadvantage right away and gets the fans on the boards back. Take Howe, I don't want him but some seem to. Maybe he's really good, but there's surely little doubt players and fans would take it as a big scaling back of ambition, people would leave and his job would be far harder. Zidane might not make it as a manager, but he'd have the fans well on side and excited, and players eager to do well. No, I'm not saying we have any chance of enticing Zidane! But you get the point. Zidane is making his niche at Real, he was youth team coach, he's got his pro-licence now and all of a sudden Ancelotti's assistant quits, Zidane will take his place as likely as not. Then it will be Ancelotti's job he's after and he won't be content until he gets it. His son plays for their U21s as well and all the family likes Madrid, he's got his future well mapped out by all apparences. Bordeaux had him in for talks (Mrs is from there) but apparently his conditions were drastic and Bordeaux couldn't muster anywhere near the cash he wanted for transfers. That said Moyes would bring some qualities: we'd be hard to beat, and if he replicated what he did at Everton we could find ourselves consistent top 8 with the odd push for Europe.
