trousers Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 A little voice in my head keeps whispering: "Roy Hodgson".
pap Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Board intentions permitting, there has never really been a better time to get a new manager. There are a number of very decent candidates; the quality of some of the names we're being linked with is testament to the progress the club has made. MP was a huge gamble that paid off. We all remember the noise on here when he was appointed. "What's he won? Didn't he get sacked? Look at Espanyol's league position!". Many pointed out that he was having his players sold from underneath him; MP vindicated that view in his time here. Many of the names we're being linked with are proven winners. De Boer has won the Eridivisie so many times he's bored with it. Murat Yakin has done well in Switzerland; doubts about the quality of the league are quieted by FC Basel's European performances. Even Steve McLaren won the Eridivisie with FC Twente. Yes, each represents a gamble of some kind, but much less than Poch, and thankfully, we are a f**king long way from having to appoint the Sturrocks and Wigleys of this world.
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 A little voice in my head keeps whispering: "Roy Hodgson". You need to see a doctor. No, really.
Gambol2K9 Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Whoever we get in needs to be a strong character, it's going to be a tough job keeping that team together and getting them stabilised and motivated for next season.
scotty Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 A couple of weeks back I'd have groaned at the idea of McLaren, but then watched the playoff final. He's got Derby playing a very similar game to ours, and is good on the coaching side as well. On the downside, they played qpr off the pitch, and still lost....so he'd fit in perfectly here.
The Kraken Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 A little voice in my head keeps whispering: "Roy Hodgson". I'd thought all season long that he was being lined up for the Director of Sport role.
Toadhall Saint Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Yakin fits the criteria and wants the job, get him in. Yep he'll do.
Strangely Brown Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Might as well post more when there is more to talk about. Plus, Benitez is a ridiculous suggestion. Fancy Mourinho too? Fair comment but consider this it is alleged Benitez wants to come back to manage in the EPL, so you can rule out the top 4 clubs, Everton love Martinez after the season they have had, I won't mention the North London Yobbos and Man Ure have just appointed a new manger so the next in line are.....
Sergei Gotsmanov Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Michael Laudrup please. Nope he will do exactly the same as MP if we do well. Lets go Moyes - he wont want to walk out on us when the first club comes knocking
JoeShmoe Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Yakin fits the criteria and wants the job, get him in. If he's available he's get my vote
SaintSteve Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Nope he will do exactly the same as MP if we do well. Lets go Moyes - he wont want to walk out on us when the first club comes knocking Can we please forget Moyes as an option.. negative thinker and not one for playing Youth scheme graduates. Yakin looks promising.. depends whether our Board can attract top coaches.
eelpie Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Doesn't anyone want an English, Scottish or Irish manager? Aren't we the club that is producing the best home grown young football talent? So why not? We are Southampton, recognised by the press as the saviour of English football. I'll start the ball rolling. Nigel Pearson He was doing well for us before L***e undeservedly sacked him. He didn't want to leave Saints at the time. And he is doing a fantastic job at Leicester.
Saint Charlie Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Has Sven Goran Eriksson admitted his interest yet? Shame there isnt another obvious Martinez type hanging around at a smaller club that we can pinch.
SNSUN Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 The more I hear about Yakin the more I like. I suppose he'd be my top choice currently. I wouldn't be upset if we brought Moyes in, and I still think Magath would be a decent appointment. I'm not against McClaren either. There are some names on this thread I wouldn't care to see here though. I know Sherwood and Lennon have some support but I wouldn't want either. That said I wonder if Kat and Ralph would be swayed by Lennon's CV. Oh, and I'd cut my penis off if we appoint Hughton. With a blunt knife. Then I'd pour acid on the bleeding patch of flesh where my penis used to be. It'd be a one way ticket to relegation.
S-Clarke Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Sounds like Yakin wants it. Would be a good fit to be honest, good calibre. If we go and appoint someone like Mckay or Poyet instead then it does indicate we really don't know what we're doing.
Chewy Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 I'd be happy with yakin. I've advocated rosler previously and stick by that, and tuchel would be interesting, but someone else mentioned sampaoli, the chile coach, a couple of weeks back. Plays a very similar style to poch and bielsa so would fit our current tactics, and is apparently learning english in a bid to get a job over here. Don't know enough about him but on the face of it looks a good fit. Yakins Swiss nationality might sway things towards him. What I really don't want, however, is a managers whose failed elsewhere such as Clarke, laudrup, Mackay, hughton, etc. moyes, though, I would take. Can't say I particularly like his style of football, but we'd be safe in this league for a while under him. But I'd still rather one of the above to bring in a touch of excitement.
LeBenali Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 From memory Yakin was linked with Spurs in December #pointlessfact
S-Clarke Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 From memory Yakin was linked with Spurs in December #pointlessfact So we're warming up their next manager for them, then.
doddisalegend Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 This morning I didn't know who Yakin was but looking around on the net for info he has just become my preferred choice sounds like a very intelligent guy who has more than just a plan A...............get him in please. That said I wouldn't be upset with Moyes.
doddisalegend Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 So we're warming up their next manager for them, then. Clearly we need to get used to that......
Suhari Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 (edited) Sudden thought: Bruce Arena. Name's been mentioned elsewhere in connection to the club. An American manager would massively raise our profile in the good old US of A...... .....which would equal commercial growth. Surely not.... Edited 27 May, 2014 by Suhari
S-Clarke Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Sudden thought: Bruce Arena. Name's been mentioned elsewhere in connection to the club. An American manager would massively raise our profile in the good old US is A...... .....which would equal commercial growth. Surely not.... GO TEAM SAINTS! #teamsaints He knows how to use the roster system quite well, so that's an advantage.
angelman Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Yakin is shortest odds at 2/1 (http://www.oddschecker.com/football/football-specials/southampton/next-permanent-manager) with Bet Victor. Started off at 8s this morning so fairly dramatic shift.
DanW Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Or, by that train of thought, Bob Bradley. He just signed in Norway, but he's got a recently promoted team into 3rd place. He's always wanted to coach in Europe although I don't think he had Norway in mind.
Baird of the land Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Would be deeply disappointed if it turns out to be moyes. That there's worse fits for us such as Mackay/hughton is about all positive I could say. Reading yakin's quotes for first time made me hopeful he might be interested in coming. Seems young, plays right way & has cut his teeth well at Basel. As long as he has similar faith in youth it looks like a great fit with saints.

The only American manager I'd want is the one managing the national side..............and that's because he isn't American
Saint Charlie Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Ramon Diaz has just resigned out of the blue. Interesting.
Appy Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Ramon Diaz has just resigned out of the blue. Interesting. I'd prefer Cameron.
Shroppie Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 David moyes would be a good shout Not for me, thanks.
pap Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Not for me, thanks. Nor me. Needs some time out. He'll be a broken man at the moment.
jayrivers Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Not for me, thanks. I think we could do a lot worse! Also think we could do worse than Tim Sherwood, however I think we could also do better!
Counterforce Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Ramon Diaz has just resigned out of the blue. Interesting. As in Ramon Diaz of River Plate? And if so, could you provide a source please? Doubly interested in this as my other half is Argentinian and I follow River as a second team...
St Chalet Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Moyes I presume would also bring with him a back room staff, a reason IIRC why he joined Everton over us 13 years ago.
Saint Charlie Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 As in Ramon Diaz of River Plate? And if so, could you provide a source please? Doubly interested in this as my other half is Argentinian and I follow River as a second team... Correct. Source is a Journalist on Twitter. Apparently unexpected.
Dr Who? Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 David moyes would be a good shout Yep another good choice, but does not fit in with the style of football we are playing at the moment.
Counterforce Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 My ideal but very unlikely pick would be Jorge Sampaoli, current manager of Chile and another disciple of Bielsa like Poch. Some kind of continuity there, which could be important during a 'transitional' period. Very unlikely though, as I've said. Yakin seems like the most interesting option from the names being touted about.
Olallana Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 If we want to keep the squad together it has to be a very good name and I for one dont think Howe, Laudrup, Poyet etc will do that. Someone like De Boer (together with Bergkamp) would probably get the players attention and interest on top again, Yakin or Tuchel can do that but need to make a great first impression on them as MP did when he came in. Pleast just not a safe choice like Moyes, Mclaren or someone like that...
Counterforce Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 Correct. Source is a Journalist on Twitter. Apparently unexpected. Blimey. And thanks - will keep an eye out for more. I suppose he'd be leaving on a high after the Super Final victory against San Lorenzo...
ericofarabia Posted 27 May, 2014 Posted 27 May, 2014 David moyes would be a good shout Maybe we could borrow The Man Yoo "The Chosen One" Banner to make him feel at home!! Thumbs down from me as well on him. Damaged goods at the moment. We want somebody on the way up and full of confidence.
