TopGun Posted 12 May, 2014 Share Posted 12 May, 2014 Have we had 3 in a WC squad before? If not what was our previous best and who was in it? I get a bit mixed up about who was playing for Saints and England at the same time in the 1980s. Keegan was a Saints player in 1982 (although hardly featured because of injury). Were Shilton and Wright still Saints in 1986... perhaps not...
Chewy Posted 12 May, 2014 Share Posted 12 May, 2014 Mick mills in 82 as well as Keegan. Wright didn't go to Mexico after he broke his leg in a clash with Shilton in the fa cup semi v Liverpool at white hart lane. He would undoubtedly have gone otherwise. I think the 2 in 82 must have been our previous best but will happily be corrected.
Turkish Posted 12 May, 2014 Share Posted 12 May, 2014 (edited) Shilton and wright were both at saints but wright didn't go as he'd broken his leg that season in the semi final v Liverpool. Certainly in my lifetime of watching football from the mid 80s I can't remember us having even 3 players in the tournament, let alone the England squad. Maybe some of our older fans can. Edit. Just remember we had 3 players in 2002. Bridge, anders Svenson and Delgado, if he counts. Edited 12 May, 2014 by Turkish

Guaranteed 5 this time, (if Gaston recovers) could even become 6 if Morgan makes the cut and would have been 7 barring injury to JRod. That is impressive by any standard and of course one more if you include the forgotten one Osvaldo
TopGun Posted 12 May, 2014 Author Share Posted 12 May, 2014 Six anyway - SRL, Lallana, Shaw, Yoshi, Lovren, Gaston (plus Osvaldo for seven if counted).
dubai_phil Posted 12 May, 2014 Share Posted 12 May, 2014 OK so have any Saints players SCORED for ENGLAND in a WC?
Chewy Posted 12 May, 2014 Share Posted 12 May, 2014 Neither were Saints players at that time. Shilton joined in July and Mills in November. I said mills and Keegan, not mills and shilts. Guess mills was still at Ipswich then? I was only 5 so will let myself off I remember crying when we lost to Liverpool in that semi. I know for some people the 84 semi was harder to take, but with the age I was losing mark wright to a broken leg as well as losing that semi ... My first of many disappointments. Which makes days like today all the more sweeter. So proud of this squad.

Turkish Posted 12 May, 2014 Share Posted 12 May, 2014 OK that's more info than I started with. Thx Can only think of a number of ex saints players. Peter crouch, shearer, mark wright, no current ones.and of course the southampton born Darren Anderton scored v Columbia in 1998.
Wurzel Posted 12 May, 2014 Share Posted 12 May, 2014 This week's 442 has chart of what clubs supplied players for England WC squads. We have 3, 1 each in 66, 86, and 02 so Paine Shilton and Bridge. Had Keegan already left by time 82 started then?

We have 3, 1 each in 66, 86, and 02 so Paine Shilton and Bridge. Had Keegan already left by time 82 started then? No. He came out with the legendary quote after we were knocked out in the 2nd round, having only played the last 20 mins in the tournament due to injury. "all I'm interested in is getting fit for the new season with Southampton." We then signed Shilton, (no glass ceilings around then:rolleyes:) only for KK to bug ger off for the "challenge". The challenge of an indecent salary subsidised by Scottish & Newcastle brewery. Bitter? Moi?
