Those above proposing a knock-out competition involving the champions of the leagues of Europe might not recall we used to have just that. It was called the European Cup.

The big fear and danger for Uefa - and the domestic leagues - is that the big clubs will clear off and do their own thing.

I've said on here before that it would come as no surprise if a TV company (I can't think of any off the top of my head) came along and offered them a similar type of deal to what Kerry Packer offered cricketers years ago.

Granted, Packer was after individual players for his WSC, but the principal is the same. "If we make it worth your while, leave your domestic and federation competition, and play in a TV-funded world league, or European Super League."

I don't think anybody is under any illusions the big clubs stay around out of nostalgic feeling for domestic football. They're here because there isn't a better financial offer around. In fact, the big clubs probably hate the Premier League's collective bargaining process which means they have to share Sky's booty with the likes of Saints, West Brom, and others.

If somebody comes up with enough money, the big clubs won't hang around. They did it once in 1992, when they left the Football League to form the Premier League. And Saints were among that number.

They needed the other, smaller clubs at the time as there was no other game in town, but now, the clubs outside the top five are just a millstone to the big boys.

I also think this scenario might have taken a step closer with the news that Fifa have sold the World Cup rights to BBC and ITV among the terrestrial broadcasters for the 2018 and 2022 competitions. Big clubs hate international matches and tournaments. Liverpool would have Suarez at the start of the season if it wasn't for the pesky World Cup, and how long will it be before we hear the first winge from Wenger about how tired his players are?

Murdoch hates the fact that Fifa - in wanting the finals of their prime competition to be seen by as many people as possible - won't sell the rights to PPV suppliers like him.

He could gain his ultimate revenge on Fifa, and at the same time, make sure he has all the best toys, by setting up a TV-funded Super League. Sky may not be able to do it on their own, but it would only need a couple of other big cable/satellite companies with eyes on the Far Eastern prize to climb into bed with Murdoch to make it happen.

Brenda saying that an announcement of sorts is close.....So as far as I see it, in order of likelihood.

a) we are arguing about money and won't have our pants pulled down and things, while maybe close, aren't finalised

b) we have asked them to delay the announcement as part of the deal

c) there is a problem with the medical

d) AL has had a change of heart and wants to stay a Saint.

Any other reason?

This deal has been "done" since Friday so I can only think the hold up is our end given he has supposedly passed the medical. Dont think Saints will want to announce his departure unless they are in position to announce a new signing of their own. Pelle was training with Feyenoord today so unless he is flying in this afternoon I cant see this deal being announced today. Maybe Tadic deal is closer to completion.

Does anyone have a screenshot of a tweet he did a year or so back stating 'Can't wait to be a Saint for life'?

Never fails to amuse me how quickly people change when money enters the picture...

Such a shame that he appears to be a bit of a prat after all the great experiences with him at Saints.

If it's not the medical, could it be a delay due to Liverpool wanting to sign Lovren too? Maybe the deal that's been agreed with Saints is interlinked on the price. Who else of ours are they after?

FloridaMarlin: The World Cup / Euro Finals are on terrestrial TV and not sold to Sky because the Labour government passed legislation that they should remain accessible to all. Nothing to do with FIFA.

Well done, Labour!..........But, WTF? huh? Maybe I should read back and find the relevance to the thread. ;)

Maybe this is what's holding up the Lallana deal.

So you would tune in to watch a game between Levadia Tallinn and Man City. That would constitute better entertainment to you than say City against Real or Bayern against Barca?

It would be a crap competition, it's basically the Europa League but with Man City, Athletico, Bayern, PSG and Juve thrown in. There wouldn't be a game worth watching until you got to the semi finals. It would just be the Champions of Slovenia, Montenegro and Hungary getting smashed by the bigger clubs in the early stages.

No I just don't watch the champions league full stop couldn't care less about it unless saints were involved. CL money is horribly skewering the rest of European football IMO so either other teams would get a slice of the money instead of just the usual suspects or the whole thing goes tits up as no one wants to watch it either way I'm happier and I still wouldn't watch it.

What is the main aim of teams in the PL? It's not to win it, it's to qualify for the CL. Now surely that has to tell you that there is something wrong with it.

e) Saints playing for time so that the calendar ticks over into 1st July upon which Lallana is contractually bound to report for duty at Staplewood where Koeman will have a chat with him to try and convince him to stay?

Yours far-fetched-ly.....

Saints are delaying until after the new kit is revealed because Adam was the model for it .....................

I doubt it - they can't be arsed to take down the posters and shop fittings plastered with Lambert, Shaw and Lallana in the West Quay store etc., so can't see them worried about that TBH!

If the money was spread out evenly across all the teams there would be no motivation to win it and most clubs would put there reserves out. Nobody would want to watch that, if nobody watches it there is no money and then the whole thing collapses. The fact that there is so much money involved shows that there is a lot of interest in the competition and people are willing to pay large amounts to watch games on TV.

It's capitalism. It may not be perfect but it's the best system we can think of.

More like choreography of events. Saints need to get a couple of faces in before we let any more go otherwise the hysterics would break the internet.

The sooner the better. Even though Bournemouth get a (quite unreasonably large) slice of the fee, Tadic looks a better player to me and enough of the £18m share will be left to pay for Pelle as well, who also looks a better investment at this stage of his career than Lambert. Pelle could still be playing for us when Rickie is spending his Saturday afternoons with his feet up in front of the TV, remembering those last couple of seasons when he was a sub for Liverpool.

@bigadamsport: Look's like paperwork delays have knackered my 'Lallana to complete move today' tweet earlier - apologies #saintsfc #LFC

Pushing the sale into a new financial year perhaps. You never know, we might even have made a profit and be liable for tax.

hes as good as gone, looks a done deal, grateful for what he has done for us but not over enthused about the way he has allegedly gone about the move!

I took a screen shot there coz I thought it was a genuine advert that had popped up on the forum rather than someone's post! It's been a long day... :)

It is an advert. Horse hair care products have spiked in Hampshire and I heard from a marketing guy that they're now diverting shipments to the Merseyside area.

They could probably do with an East End branch too.

Probably the delay is a clause to ensure he continues to be supplied with his designer New Forest Pony Boots

I'm ticking the box marked 'Strongly Disagree' here.

The formation of the league was at an 'amateur' level and professionalism was strongly resisted for many years.

The game was as popular, maybe more so, then.

There is no reason to suggest sport cannot thrive without immediate (or such intrinsic and entwined) financial reward.

I guess back then the League operated in a world where 'Labour' meant something to most people and also to market and political forces.

Capitalism may be the best we can hope to achieve right now, but I it is not the best we can think of! ;-)

I think a lot of the vitriol is because we are genuinely gutted to lose him. He is a good player and we'd be a better team if he stayed. Things change quickly in football and if he doesn't want to fulfil his destiny as club legend that's fine. Let's show a bit of class ourselves and not act like dumped teenagers.

Having met him I don't think he is up his own arse, I'd actually say he is quite shy and insular if anything, doesn't enjoy the limelight ala Scholes.

So good luck Adam, thanks for the memories and I hope we pass Liverpool on the way down on our way to the Champions League.

I also note TheVMAN has been viewing the forum, if you feel owe this man anything for all the ITK snippets we have had in recent years, it would be nice to respect the fact that he is someone probably very close to Adam and can't be pleasant reading.

Sure I am fine with that.

It seems like we are all going through the grieving process, just you are still at anger whilst I have got through to acceptance. So let it all out.
