2013/14 Home attendance

Total attendance 567,015

Average 29,843

Highest 31,372 v Man Utd

Lowest 27,987 v Stoke

2012/13 30,873 Down 3.3% this season

Record Average 31,717 2003/4

Record Crowd 32,363 2011/12

So based on the above information it appears we are unable to 'sell out' the ground to an attendance figure which is less than our average gate 10 years ago

Presumably the segregation arrangements are the same.

Is the difference in Hospitality?

I think your figures a not right for this season 13/14

Total home league attendance for 19 games was 574,020

Average = 30,212

Highest attendance 31,659 v Liverpool 1st March

Thanks

I did a quick on a back of fag packet calculation from the programme whilst on a train

The figures you quote are correct and it is nice to get over the 30,000 average.

Still find it difficult to understand why our best crowd is almost 1,000 short of capacity

Think people are misunderstanding the point the OP is making.

In 2003 / 2004 our average crowd was 31,717.

This year our highest crowd was 31,659.

So despite having quite a few 'sold out' games, none of them even got to our average attendance ten years ago. Yesterday was a sell out, but is was 1,000 less than our record attendance. That's a big difference, they must be counting differently these days.

Ray, think the difference is due to away attendance and corporate sales. This and the wide segregation at the Home Half End

It's mainly the collapse in away fans. Obviously the huge teams (like Man Utd on Sunday) take the whole gig. But the middling teams are selling, sway, 800 seats rather than 1,500.

The way St Mary's has been set up (maybe wrongly...as others have said re: Northam) means this hits attendance.

Falling away attendances have been covered a lot in the media...I think 5 Live did a big piece on it a few months back.

Additionally, wider TV coverage, internet availability and a sluggish economy haven't helped attendances.

It looks like people are still misunderstanding the original point. Why do sold out games not get near our capacity amount?

There always seems to be areas of empty seats even in 'sold out' games.

This was evident at the Man Utd game both in the home and away end.

Would be interested to know what the reason is.

Perhaps problems with the Booking Office computer, ticket holders not turning up (but shouldn't that count in the attendance figure?), tickets allocated to staff (but presumably not in the away end ) etc etc.

As mentioned we are 1,000 short of capacity for 'sold out' games and probably 400-500 lost to segregation, so there is a 'missing' 500

We waste far too many seats with segregation in the northam.

It is not necessary at most other grounds so why here ?

there has to be segregation......but isn't there some stipulation from the League that we must supply min. 5 % seats to away fans?..

......of course....Man.City /Utd, and Liverpool have more travelling fans...but (back to segregation)...it surely needs more than half-a-dozen seats in each row in order to to separate the two fan groups.

.......that means we are going to fall short of the potential max. attendance all the time.

The (actual) ground record was in an international match when segregation wasn't required.

The family section always has around 100 seats available even after the "sold out" signs have gone up, I'm assuming they are unable or unwilling to sell individual tickets to adults in that part of the ground. Corporate sales have largely been terrible since we were promoted, so that could account for anything up to 1500 empty seats in a "sold out to the general public" stadium.

10%, but that figure is after segregation is taken into account.

Incorrect. The Coventry game in 2012 is the stadium record as the club managed to squeeze the segregation down to the absolute bare minimum. I think the netting was only covering an area two or three seats wide, if that.
