Better starting XI from teams below us

Can you pick a team, made up of players from teams that finished below us this season, that would be better than our current best side? Which Saints players would retain their place? Use our formation.

...................................Krul......................

....Clyne/Joel Ward.........Lovren......Curtis Davies........Shaw

.....................Schneiderlin........Cork (Jedinak).................

............Remy.................Lallana....................Rodriguez

......................................Bony..................................

Krul - Kept Newcastle form a few embarrassing scorelines. Artur not far behind.

Joel Ward - obviously wont be a popular suggestion given his history, but has been undeniably fantastic this year + Clyne has been in and out of our side. I'd say Ward's had the better season, but overall Clyne the better player with more potential.

Davies - obvious choice. Fonte has done nothing wrong/been a very good player for us but Davies has been excellent for Hull.

Jedinak - Very tough between him and Cork. Think Cork would just edge it - close though.

Remy - slightly out of position but can play as a wide forward and would certainly improve our team

Bony - no brainer. Benteke another that would be add quality.

I think that this really shows the gulf that is now between Saints and the clubs below us. We make up the vast majority of that team, and even the positions where our players don't feature, we have very strong candidates (Boruc, Fonte, Clyne, Chambers, Davis, Lambert). All of that said, try slotting our players into a team made up players from the teams above us in the league....Were in a league of our own!!!

Thoughts?

Joel Ward hahahahahaha average championship player at best, Clyne is a far FAR better RB than that skate pr!ck.

Curtis Davies over Jose Fonte?!?!?! Can I have some of what you're smoking? hahahaha

Jedinak = meh

Rémy = Agreed

Bony = Agreed

This isn't a "who do we want to sign" thread. More an objective "team of the season"/"best XI" from 8th and down. Not looking for players to fit in the with the playing style/attitude of the squad!

All anti pompey bias aside Ward has been very very good this year. As OP said, Clyne the better player, but only a Saints fan would claim he's had the better season.

Davies V Fonte, in the context, would be certainly be Davies. I personally like Lovren/Fonte, but Davies has excelled for Hull this season, whereas I would describe Fonte as having a solid campaign.

Jedinak is definitely not "shocking"!! As I said Cork would edge it for me, but in terms of the statistics websites (whoscored etc.) Jedinak is waaay above Cork (and Morgan I believe) in terms of average rating. Clearly those sites have to be taken with a pinch of salt, but any notion that he's a terrible player is extremely biased and ruins the point of the thread. Loved by Palace fans and has been a key reason why they've stayed up.

Remy - does well in a very average team. Could certainly make an argument for S Davis. Other possible candidates would be Puncheon on recent form, maybe Arnautvatic at Stoke and possibly De Guzman/Dyer at Swansea.

Bony - 100% for me.

Anyone else have any other non saints candidates?

Mutch and Huddlestone might sneak in there.

I think the more interesting question would be the best starting XI from all teams below us, with no Saints players in it. And then how well that team would do in the PL.

GK - Krul

RB - Debuchy

CB - Davies?

CB - Caulker? Shawcross?

LB - Bertrand (loan from chelsea) Ben Davies?

CDM - Noble

CDM - Medel

RAM - Puncheon

CAM - Arnautovic? Holtby?

LAM - Dyer (swap with RAM)

ST - Bony/Benteke

Also interesting to think about if there are any players we'd want from relegated teams in particular - i know they have been relegated for a reason, but still worth a thought.

For me, Caulker would be a great addition for us alongside Lovren. He is a real talent, can play the ball at the back, scores goals, big physical presence. He's made mistakes this year but who wouldn't in a defence/struggling team like Cardiff's. Would be delighted if we signed him - was amazed he joined Cardiff in the first place.

Medel?! Some of you have picked Medel?!

One of the worst signings of the season IMO at that price. Unbelievably limited player, got championship written all over him.

When Chile played England he did ok and this season he has also been ok? He is a DM not Eric Cantona, if you want to see a limited footballer look no further than Wanyama.

Noble? Not as good as Cork, Morgan, Wanyama and Davis. Arguably not better than JWP either. Reed will become a better player than him too IMO.

I think he's going along with this idea not the original posts idea.

I dunno Baz, I think there is more choice than RVW and Osvaldo.

Either way, I like strikers that score goals. Osvaldo scored 3 times as many.

RVW has been played out of position and is a with a side that will get relegated, he has a proven record before his arrival and could do a better job at a better side or I think he would, Hooper as well.

Jedinak?! I've never seen such a limited passer of a football in the premier league (especially in central midfield). Being quite local, have seen Palace live quite a few times (although only 3 times this season), and he's been absolutely shocking more times than he's been decent. Have heard reports from season ticket holding mates that he's upped his game recently, but even they admit he's not very good. He's more of a cult hero cos he's so bad he's good sort of thing. He's nowhere near the level of Wanyama / Schneiderlin / Cork. Admitedly is decent in the air, but I'm really surprised he's played so many games this year.

Some of these are not better than our starters. No one is better than Shaw, that's for certain. But there is some talent going on what I have seen this season (Remy apart, who is always injured).

Krul

Rosenior O'Shea Shawcross Jones

Mutch Delph Mulumbu Arnautovic

Remy Bony

His name got mentioned on MOTD the other night, which might explain his inclusion on this thread. He was absolutely woeful at SMS. One of the worse CM players I have seen in the Prem on that display. Maybe he has improved since then.

He was also terrible their home game v West Ham. The two times i've seen them live this season and he's been awful. Seen on TV a couple more times and not been much better.

Both whoscored sourced and statistics only tell half the story, but clearly he must be doing something right. I've seen him play quite a few times this season (certainly not mentioned because it was MOTD mentioned...) and have always been impressed with his workrate and contribution to the team. Goes under the radar but very valuable to Palace IMO.

Lol, player might do better in a better team.

Is there a player this doesn't apply to?

You do know he is having a great season at Newcastle?

I really, really don't. Their defending has been absolutely comical over the last few months and it wasn't great before that. They've had some solid displays but they've only managed eight clean sheets this season since he returned from injury. Krul saved them almost single-handedly in more than one of those games.

He's not the worst player out there but he sure as hell isn't better than Fonte or Lovren.

Guly, Mayuka and Osvaldo so no.

Osvaldo did very well for Roma.

The whole Palace team has improved (dramatically) under Pulis.

He is better than Fonte by a mile, Fonte looks lost sometimes out there on the pitch.
