washsaint Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 Deserves his own thread.......absolutely immense again today and a real beast. Boy did we miss him when he was out for long periods earlier this season. What a signing he has turned out to be: should be first name on the team sheet with the strength he brings to our defence. What a great season we have been privileged to see.
Pastor Patrón Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 I'd say he just about qualifies as a good signing. Missed way too many games injured and is dreadful in possession but the team does seem to function far better with him in it and at 22 you can allow the odd mistake.
Saint Matty 76 Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 It really can't be a coincidence that we haven't conceded a goal since he's came back into the starting 11. Conceded just 11 goals whilst he's been on the pitch in the 19 games he's played more than 45 minutes in, some record.
Golden Balls Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 Would be interesting to see where we'd have finished if he stayed fit all season.
Monk Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 His conviction when travelling with the ball needs to be more exposed and worked on next season. Its Yaya Toure'esq with his power and speed he can travel at but it just needs more composure and a more effective end product. That could become a deadly asset to his game.
doggface Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 Up and down season for big Vic. But great to see him back finishing very strong. People forget he is still young, but I think working with poch his bad habits can be coached
trousers Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 Would be interesting to see where we'd have finished if he stayed fit all season. Top 6 IMO
sydneysaint17 Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 Since he's come back we've looked a lot more solid at the back. That said, we've also looked a lot less dangerous going forward.
saintadjg Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 I'll take clean sheets all day long.VW was a bargain.and for me is more important to our side than Cork.Who most seem to prefer even though we have a better record with Vic
Miltonaggro Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 Would be interesting to see where we'd have finished if he stayed fit all season. Him and Boruc, we would be looking at top six. A message in terms of summer recruitment...
Dalek2003 Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 Him and Boruc, we would be looking at top six. A message in terms of summer recruitment... Bang on. Also, we do need a striker...desperately as I cannot see Jay Rod back until December and it may take time to get up to his high standard.
georgeweahscousin Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 Always admired by opposition fans, usually more than our own. Superb again today. Three clean sheets since he came back. No coincidence whatsoever.
S-Clarke Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 Class player. Reason why we started the season with so many clean sheets, it was plainly obvious that we'd struggle once he had his injury lay off. Last year, although Cork and Morgan are so good on the ball, they're easy to play through and the opposition do end up getting more time on the ball. But with Wanyama in the side, whether it's his head, foot, toe, chest...he will block it, break it up and halt the proceedings. He's never going to be what I'd call a pretty player, but he's bloody damn effective at what he does. It must give Lovren and Fonte so much confidence that they have such protection in front of them - and he does literately sit there all game.
John Boy Saint Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 He certainly has proved to be a good acquisition, and in the Everton game his control and passing certainly did look much sharper. If the Ponytailed bellend and the work shy Uruguayan had knuckled down and worked like big Vic we would be have definitely finished higher.

This position is so natural for him and he's damned good there. I've said it before, he'll be a very important player for us next season.
CB Saint Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 Hang on a minute, he's suppose to have been a carp buy, it said so on here. Surely you must be talking about some else.
View From The Top Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 Beast. Love him. That said, he was utterly gash at Fulham.
Goatboy Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 Beast. Love him. That said, he was utterly gash at Fulham. First game back. Wasn't match fit. But yes, he was awful that day. Still, we did ok;)
S-Clarke Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 'Might be a good signing overall'?! Clearly a very good signing, we always look solid and don't concede many. He's young, gained vital experience, improving his passing and I imagine his value has gone up. Great player and great to see him, Cork and Morgan in the same side. We are so close to having a truly excellent side. Just an extra decent option in defence and a clinical striker with a bit of pace and who knows what it possible. Isn't he only 21, or something silly like that? Will be frightening in a few years.
Saint_clark Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 Not sure why people are saying his passing is poor or he sits in front of the defence all game, neither of those applied today. Passing was accurate and he went forward with the ball brilliantly.

But he managed to get the ball back again, luckily.

View From The Top Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 He had a broken leg and had just come back and then was out again. Still didn't concede a goal tho. I'm fully aware of that. He clearly wasn't match fit.

Passing was accurate and he went forward with the ball brilliantly. His passing accuracy has been 90% plus in the last three games. He isn't trying silly passes anymore. Playing it simple, doing his job.
Saint_Tony Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 I think a lot of posters are over exaggerating his contribution this season. He's missed a lot of games, and he's been hit or miss in those that he's played. However, I have been very impressed with him in the last few games and think he will be one of our key players next season. I forget he is still young and has huge potential
saintadjg Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 He's not been hit and miss in my eyes. The only goal we conceded down to him was also down to Boruc.cant remember any other times we've conceded cause of him Some of our players can do no wrong ala Cork he gives the ball away no one bats an eyelid same for some of our other players
Mr Saints Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 I expect he can't wait to dominate United's usually spineless midfield.
ant Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 He's fine it he keeps it simple. When he attempts Hollywood balls he's as poor as me. Not sure what his pass completion rate was today yet, but in the previous two matches he was at 95%. Much improved in that respect from earlier in the season.
Saint Garrett Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 He's certainly improved and is solid. Does the job he's there to do.
Shropshire Saint Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 I expect he can't wait to dominate United's usually spineless midfield. He did so at Old Trafford earlier in the season
Leicestersaint Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 He is a good stopper but is he also sufficiently creative? Does he ever score a goal?
skintsaint Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 Does he ever score a goal? Makalele was one of the best in that position and rarely scored. He has had a few decent long range efforts. I thought he might be more of a threat at set pieces though. He did this quite a bit for Celtic :
shurlock Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 He is a good stopper but is he also sufficiently creative? Does he ever score a goal? Will come with time - got a few for Celtic and has a decent shot on him. Confident we'll see more parts of his game next season.

As a team we are far far better defensively when vw plays. Said the same last week
Batman Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 With big Vic, he wins a great deal of the 1st ball in front of the CB's, more so in the air which means, lovren and fonte don't have to It's no coincidence that we go on another defensive run with him in the side. He adds a huge amount to us letting in 0 or 1. Which give us a greater chance of getting points with just 1 goal
Barry Sanchez Posted 3 May, 2014 Posted 3 May, 2014 I feel we marginally gain from having him, what we get in him stopping play and closing down others we lose in poor flat passing and attacking guile, I still prefer Cork in to him but a good squad player for me.

So we gain from having him but you'd still rather have someone else. Errrr ok then

saintadjg Posted 4 May, 2014 Posted 4 May, 2014 For me Cork &Spider are the ones who are more alike.both very good but not as good at Vic role as Vic.I don't care if he doesn't go mazy dribbling runs and shooting every time he gets the ball.He makes us more solid defensively that's his job and does it bloody well.
Window Cleaner Posted 4 May, 2014 Posted 4 May, 2014 Wanyama still worries me on occasions against good class players, nearly f*cked up again yesterday but was generally OK. Still rather have Morgan and Corky myself.
Roger Posted 4 May, 2014 Posted 4 May, 2014 Wanyama still worries me on occasions against good class players, nearly f*cked up again yesterday but was generally OK. Still rather have Morgan and Corky myself. He played one bad pass and won the ball back. His pass completion rate over 90% last 3 games. His you can not see what we are so much better defensively when he plays is beyond me. I'm sure he will be first choice for mp. Class players, Like marking Gerard out game at anfield, Barkley out game last week, Ozil out game at arsenal, great game at is Trafford too. And he did petty well against messi twice for Celtic last year!
Bwanamakubwa Posted 4 May, 2014 Posted 4 May, 2014 It doesn't matter Roger! The verdict has been cast!

Would have been good to see him offer more against Chelsea (a) and how he would have fared against City and Spurs where there were goals galore.

He did his defensive duties well at anfield, Chelsea away he picked up an injury when we were 1/0 up and it hampered him.
