European Elections 2014

Local radio suggests 25% turnout around here. Pathetic if true.

Sad really. No doubt we'll hear a load of pony blaming politics, politicians and voting systems, but people need to look in the mirror. If people are content , then that's one thing, but people clearly aren't. You hear people moaning all the time. Its no wonder the political establishment take us for granted. Until people get off their arses and use the system to change the system, nothing is gonna change.

Lord D, for once, I wholeheartedly agree with you.

Can't talk watching the UKIP show, sorry, I mean Question Time.

I've watched 20 mins of it, and its a joke. Hamilton has been put up as a patsy, disgraceful biased programme.

The most impressive bloke is the lib/dumb, and the baldy ukip supporter who spoke so eloquently.

The posh labour bloke is out of his depth. Dimble needs to get a grip.

Not really. Trade agreements tend to be liberating, facilitating wealth creation and innovation. Capitalism has taken far more people out of poverty than socialism can ever dream of.

I take your point, certainly I do.

My concern is that, whilst TTIP has some broad strokes that promote innovation and wealth creation, it also contains some dangerous back channels for the very largest corporations to avoid or overturn local legislation (in effect ignoring the law of the land, whatever land that happens to be).

Maybe that ship has sailed - look at how big corps already work the tax system - but I shudder at the idea of giving them the veto over our legal system too.

Blimey.. I think I agree with you Lord (not about the baldy but about the Lib/Dumb chappy).

Hamilton and Mrs H have always been a fairly odious couple IMHO, I'm sure UKIP could have put someone better than him forward.

Turn out at my local polling station - one that covers uni halls and includes around 2500 ish students - was awful. Very poor turn out when I went around midday - hopefuly more now.

On another note... Roman Empire Party anyone?

AVE!

I was sorely tempted.

But then I thought; ''what have the Romans ever done for us?"

You do despair when you see people like Hamilton and the bloke they've put up for the by election.

I'm just fed up with turning on qt or listening to any questions and its a ukip witch hunt. Had I been on it , I'd have asked posh boy" which leader said British jobs for British workers" , when he mentioned inflammatory langague. I'd have asked the lesbo how she can say " I don't know enough about ukip to comment" before calling them racists. If you don't know enough about them, how can you call them racists. I would tell that property women to stop interrupting ( but would try to pull her in the green room).

That lib/dumb is extremely impressive, what on earth is he doing with them losers. Its like Rooney playing for Stockport.

You would not believe the effort they go to in balancing the panels.

I met the producer the other week. He said the #bbcqt hashtag gets around 50,000 tweets per episode, half accusing them of liberal bias and the other half of conservative bias. So many people think it's unfair when somebody they don't agree with gets to talk.

I'd have asked the lesbo

Yep, the only way to watch QT is while reading twitter at the same time. It's hilarious but there are so many tweets, it's impossible to read them all and watch whats going on at the same time. Just got to be a bit selective.

First council votes in from Sunderland and the establishment are ****ting themselves. Ukip are showing 25

% vote share where they've never stood before. Also reporting that results from hull and Kingston will cause a " shock".

Lol at cable on sky. What's the Samaritans phone number.

Did anyone see that pretty little thing supporting ukip on sky. Told the establishment to stop patronising ukip voters with all this " protest" nonsense. People vote ukip because they like what they say.

Ukip doing well in council elections, roll on Sunday when the EU results come in.

Some pretty amazing results coming through. UKIP getting 45% share of the vote in some wards. It's brilliant that Labour are now finally having to accept UKIP are hammering them as well. Look at somewhere like Rotherham, UKIP have in fact beaten Labour in the overall vote count.

I don't want to start guessing, but it certainly makes Sunday's result look potentially very interesting.

Looks like the labour and Tory campaign against UKiP has (predictably) failed. The smear campaign was as obvious as it could get

To beat UKiP, they have to take them (and their voters) seriously and win by debate.

That's all well and good but UKIP don't have any recognisable policies (apart from immigration) to talk about.

Like all other parties they'll be laying their policies in front of the electorate at the next general election. Having a manifesto you disagree with is not the same as having no policies.

Early indications suggest that turnout in the English local election is up about 5% on 2012, suggesting it could end up at about 36%. if thats true thats a pathetic turnout but i think people had better things to do .a big blow to those who think it was the start of a new dawn and looks based on these figures looks like a hung parliament at the more important general election with labour the largest party. so in reality nothing has changed despite the media hype.

And me. Luckily I have the day off tomorrow. I remember watching obamas inauguration after pulling an all nighter.

Not sure you're remembering that 100% correctly Hypo old chum!? Personally, I remember watching both inaugurations during the day?!?! (Unless you were out raving of course, in which case, cool beans and I'll go back to pedantry where I belong).

Anyway; I too love the election all nighters so was disappointed with the lack of swing'o' meters and coloured maps etc last night. I mean, the beeb tried but even their heart wasn't in it.

My mate is still waiting to see how many votes she got personally in the local elections - her first time standing - she says the turnout was lower than

hoped (about 30% in 'Wokingham Without' council wards. )

Folks like an underdog, add Cameron and Milliband into the mix trying to belittle them and it just boosts their chances with the common man especially as they offer a bigger kick in the guts than the Lib Dems.

Polling Day should be moved to a weekend as how many folks who commute to work get home after 7pm and all they want to do is have their dinner and put their feet up to unwind, not traipse down to the Scout Hut to put an X in a box on a bit of paper. It was my 18year Old Daughters first time to vote yesterday but whereas I looked forward to my first trip as it was a rite of passage, she was pretty inert to the whole idea of going to vote.

nice to see Labour getting a hammering.

Labour have gained over 100 seats so far whilst the Conservatives have lost 100 and UKIP only gained 90.

Obviously its nowhere near the gains Labour need, or should have at this stage of a government, but lets not pretend it isnt the Tories who are damaged by UKIP.

Labour have gained 102 seats so far whilst the tories have lost 97, the Liberials have lost 99 and UKIP gained 89. How's that Labour getting hammered?

They've actually done better than expected.

No they haven't. They haven't made the gains they were projected to make.

The Guardian is having a good go at pretending.

Ukip has delivered the first tremors of the political earthquake promised by Nigel Farage as the party weakened Labour's grip in its northern heartlands and caused the Conservatives to lose control of at least eight flagship councils.

They've done more than enough, certainly more than I expected. Their core vote as remained whilst UKIP has made gains from the tories and Libs.

Try and spin it anyway you want, but it's the tories and Libs who've taken a hammering in the local elections whilst I fully expect all three of the "main" parties to take a kicking in the results on Sunday.

Oh they will form a coalition next year I am sure. I just do the believe they did better than expected.

They way experts were talking you'd have thought that whole swathes of northern England was going to turn purple or NOC & that simply hasn't happened and in London they've run riot.

All this inspite of Ed'!

TBF, I'm much more interested in Sunday.

The thought of ed as prime minister is a nauseating one. I agree with you, Sunday should be very interesting.

I can see Ed being ousted before next year. They did ok, but you feel they should be doing better at this time in the cycle, labour have consistently been behind where they should be, especially when you consider what the government have been doing. Labour not being streets ahead is a pretty poor showing.

It's also interesting how poorly UKIP did here in London. Immigration and pressures on public services are (arguably) felt more than elsewhere. They barely showed up, and even where they did they performed poorly. No surprises that their xenophobic rhetoric doesn't wash with the more culturally diverse areas.

How do you explain Birmingham then?
