I really want it to be great.

I will see it, buy the blu ray and get merch just because it was such a massive part of my childhood.

Unfortunately it will fail precisely because if that, it holds a disproportionately high level of esteem amongst fans that I feel is beyond almost any script.

Interesting to see if they go with the clone emperor story lines from the books.

Watched number 4 with my nipper the other day and the acting is just awful. I still love it and don't regret being stood inthe playground wrapped in a bin liner with a loo roll being asthmatic, but Harrison ford must look back and cringe.

There are some reasons to get excited; it's a new Star Wars film, and it is unlikely to be as crap as any of the prequels, because George Lucas no longer has complete creative control.

Some worries exist. Abram's treatment of the Star Trek stuff was like a man recreating Trek from a conversation he'd overheard. Lots of little bits of lip service, but ultimately little appreciation of the source material. First movie was forgiveable; the second was awful.

Also, I worry that the only reason the original cast are coming back is to get killed off.

Hmmmm. Not convinced about bringing the original human parts of the cast back, to be honest, but will reserve judgement until more about the storyline emerges.

Would have like the sequel trilogy to take up the Thrawn storyline, but hey-ho...

Somewhat predictably, Lucasfilm have re-asserted that none of the extended universe is canon.

Decent article here:-

There was some ham on display perhaps and Hayden Christensen is surely hewn from solid teak, but I'm not so sure the vast majority of the Star Wars cast delivered performances that I'd describe as truly "awful". The problem was undoutably more the severe limitations of the scripts George Lucas gave them to work with. But without Lucas there'd be no Star Wars in the first place, so let's give the guy a break.

As for the prequels being terrible films ... well I'm not so sure I can agree with that either. ITV show them regularly on Saturday afternoons and if I've got nothing better to do at the time (such as going to St Marys for instance) I must admit I'll quite happily sit down in front of the TV, immerse myself in this universe Lucas created yet again, and watch them for the umpteenth time.

I'm happy to concede this behaviour may be a tad odd ...

Two thirds of the prequels are terrible films. One is decent, but entirely undermined by the foundations of intergalactic turd that preceded it.

None of the plots make any sort of sense. The second part has perhaps the most ridiculous love story ever committed to cinema. Lucas knows his tropes, but no longer knows how to fill them with any personality. Even the third film, which I really do like in and of itself, has got Hayden Christiansen chewing his way through most scenes, only really ever good when he's shouty or silent. Mostly, the third movie needs to be applauded for its sheer ruthlessness. Palpatine does not muck about, his arc and Ian McDiarmid's performance is the best thing in those films.

There's also nowt structurally wrong with the way that Lucas tried to get Anakin and Padme together. Put them on a trip together, get them into a bit of peril, have them depend on each other - like I say, Lucas knows his tropes, but he really doesn't know how to create compelling characters. The prequels have no-one of the stature of Han Solo or Luke Skywalker.

I've linked this before, but this is an excellent review of TPM. Bit rude, but totally on the money.

Already on site down here in the Western Region. Heavy Police Security, huge barrier fences erected out in the middle of the desert.

It may be more than a year until the seventh film in the Star Wars saga hits the screens, however a trip into a desert not so far away has already revealed a few insights into how one of the most anticipated films of recent years is shaping up.Production on the movie is expected to start in Abu Dhabi this month.

And pre-production staff, who have been in the UAE since February, have narrowed their search down to two desert locations close to each other in the Western Region. Both have been marked off with traffic cones to help the rest of the crew locate the sites easily. It is believed the location manager scouted the locations because of their dramatic, high sand dunes.

The entrances to both locations have been locked off by security and the area is protected by fencing. The crew has gone to extraordinary lengths to keep the production secret.

All production staff, and even staff at hotels where the cast and crew will stay, have been asked to sign confidentially agreements so that the story line is not revealed, a source close to the production said. This weekend, the crew were also seen moving a set workshop away from public view and inside the fenced-off perimeter so that nobody could see it.

Several large transport trucks were also spotted moving the set, which is believed to include a spacecraft that lands on the exotic “planet” being created in the Western Region.

The crew had several large white bags of rusted and bent metal parts, which are to be strewn in the desert, possibly to show a space**craft crash or perhaps a post-apocalyptic civili*sation. Meanwhile, it’s understood that the Lucas Films has block booked accommodation near the set in anticipation for full production.

And every morning, two police cars arrive at the accommo*dation of the crew already on location and escort them to the site, making sure that they are not followed by media or curious members of the public, using diversionary measures if necessary.

The entire project is being overseen by government company, TDIC. Harrison Ford, as Han Solo, and Carrie Fisher, as Princess Leia, are among the stars set to revive their roles for the latest film.

However, the production crew are staying very quiet about which stars will be coming to Abu Dhabi.

“We would advise the curious to stay well clear of the set. It is extremely hot out there and you will not see anything. But we invite you to see it in the cinema when it comes out next year,” said a person close to the production.

Ahhhh Star Wars. I have fond memories of the original movie...it was the first time I slept with my wife :) ...from about 10 minutes in until the final credits.

I trust sir was a gentleman and bought her something from during the cinema's intermission.

I'm afraid we both missed the intermission such was our compatibility from the start. We are still sleeping together at the advent of Star Wars VII. ;)

True story. My best mate famously yanked his little fella out at the exact moment the Death Star is in shot and the pilot says "look at the size of that thing" in front of a former girlfriend.

I worked it into my best man's speech at his wedding (to another lady) and did not get killed afterwards.
