Matthew Le God Posted 22 May, 2014 Share Posted 22 May, 2014 (edited) Squad numbers for anyone who's planning on getting a shirt with one of our lads on the back definitely getting a shirt with Lambert 21 on it Ummm, hope you haven't got your shirt yet because... Southampton FC @SouthamptonFC 38s Adam Lallana will wear the number 20 shirt at this summer’s #WorldCup. Rickie Lambert gets number 18, and @LukeShaw3 is number 23. #saintsfc 1. Joe Hart 2. Glen Johnson 3. Leighton Baines 4. Steven Gerrard 5. Gary Cahill 6. Phil Jagielka 7. Jack Wilshere 8. Frank Lampard 9. Daniel Sturridge 10. Wayne Rooney 11. Daniel Welbeck 12. Chris Smalling 13. Ben Foster 14. Jordan Henderson 15. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 16. Phil Jones 17. James Milner 18. Rickie Lambert 19. Raheem Sterling 20. Adam Lallana 21. Ross Barkley 22. Fraser Forster 23. Matthew Le God Posted 22 May, 2014 Share Posted 22 May, 2014 Shaw and Lallana get the same numbers they have for Saints and Lambert can do a Zamorano and claim its 1+8 =
saint_ed Posted 22 May, 2014 Share Posted 22 May, 2014 So looks like all three are reserves then if squad numbers are anything to go by.
Matthew Le God Posted 22 May, 2014 Share Posted 22 May, 2014 (edited) So looks like all three are reserves then if squad numbers are anything to go by. Well they aren't, all they do is give a reasonable idea of the pecking order for some positions. If you applied the same to Saints then Lallana (20) and Shaw (23) wouldn't be starters at club level. Welbeck, Lampard, Wilshire all have shirts from 1-11, but I'd suggest none are guaranteed starters. Shaw and Lambert are very unlikely to start vs Italy, but I'd say Lallana has a very good chance. Baird of the land Posted 22 May, 2014 Share Posted 22 May, 2014 So what exactly has Wilshere done to earn the number 7 shirt? Really that's not an indication of Roy's thinking because i think Wilshere was fortunate to make the squad and would be crazy if promoted into first 11 over others who have actually had good seasons. Tbf, it can't be an indication as Lampard is also 8 and shouldn't be anywhere near the team

Beckenham Saint Posted 23 May, 2014 Share Posted 23 May, 2014 I'm not sure if this has been asked elsewhere or if it's relevant here... Anyone going to the England game next friday? Just booked tickets for it as I think it should be a great chance to see the Saints players get decent game time at international level. Hodgson will surely give everyone a run out in these friendlies to try and find his best team. This will be my first International match. Have seen Rickie Lambert score for us in League One, the Championship and the Premier League, would absolutely love to see him play and score for England. (In the flesh that is, I am aware he already has two goals for his country!)
CWD Posted 23 May, 2014 Share Posted 23 May, 2014 I meant squad numbers. And it was in response to Lampard being in the 1-11. Shouldn't be in the squad let alone in the first XI. Haha I see, didn't realise what you meant!

shurlock Posted 23 May, 2014 Share Posted 23 May, 2014 Really? It seems like the standard criticisms of Rooney that the whole mass media has been piping up with for quite some time. Don't hear it from ex pros, let alone a united legend. And what you do hear is how Rooney hasn't reached his potential or best on the international stage, not that he might never reach it. Big difference.
The Kraken Posted 23 May, 2014 Share Posted 23 May, 2014 Don't hear it from ex pros, let alone a united legend. The United part I agree with. But to my shame I listen to a bit of talksport on the drive to work and the conversations from ex pros has pretty much matched public opinion. That Rooney is first choice but has serious competition from Sturridge playing as the main striker, and that Lallana and Sterling provide genuine options in a front 4 (notwithstanding the likes of Oxo and Barkley). I think if Rooney is anything but 100% fit and sharp we might, just might, see something different for a change.

Rooney has been somewhat "unlucky" with fitness when it comes to major championships but has also underperformed since his very early days. I was more referring to the headless chicken and undroppable parts.
