Batman Posted 29 April, 2014 Share Posted 29 April, 2014 (edited) with just 2 games to go, surely the squad is taking shape in most eyes. who would be your 23 if you had to chose now... mine Hart Foster Forster Clyne Johnson Shaw Baines Cahill Jagielka Jones Dawson Gerrard Cork Lallana Sterling Henderson Milner Chamberlain Carrick Lambert Welbeck Rooney Sturridge townsend and wilshere will stay at home as they are clearly struggling with injuries think this is too soon for Barkley as he has dropped off quite a bit shaw has to be ahead of cole cork deserves way ahead of utter dross like cleverley i'd have clyne ahead of walker as defensively, walker is all over the place Edited 29 April, 2014 by Batman

CanadaSaint Posted 29 April, 2014 Share Posted 29 April, 2014 Hodgson's frequent presence at our recent games suggests that one or two of our guys are right "on the bubble". Lallana's close to 100% to go in everyone's eyes, so that leaves Shaw and Lambert. Lambert offers so much more than Carroll and he's shown that in recent weeks; add to that the positive impact he'll bring to the dressing room (unlike Carroll), which is a key element at World Cup time, and I reckon he's at 80% now. Shaw has continued to show solid form and amazing maturity, which should push him up to 60% vs Cole; pressure from inside the FA to take some "players for the future" probably notches him up to 80% as well. I think all three will go; they'd be near-certainties if they were at bigger clubs. Like you, I think Corky offers a stamina, work rate and efficiency that would benefit the midfield (much more than several of the "easy" choices he's made up until now), and Clyne's display at the weekend can't have gone unnoticed. However, Hodgson hasn't included either of them in the build-up (which he probably now regrets) and he won't have the gonads to include either of them now. Other than that I agree with your squad. Saint_Tony Posted 29 April, 2014 Share Posted 29 April, 2014 No, Clyne and Cork have no chance, having never been called up. Swap Barkley for Cork and I'd agree with the midfield and forwards. Can't see Dawson getting selected either

igsey Posted 30 April, 2014 Share Posted 30 April, 2014 Townsend almost certainly out injured during the world cup. This is good because it means he won't be in the squad, but bad because there will still be people that insist that he would have gone if not for injury, when clearly he's a bit pants. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/27205351

Just look at the squads that he's used so far this season and then deduct; Ruddy, Townsend, and sadly... Jay Rod. Roy H. has said he 's not likely to make any last minute changes because of someone's sudden change in form, so son't look for surprise additions - except in extreme circumstances. However, it may well depend on fitness and endurance in Brazil....because the latest stories coming out of the WC camp is the timing of some of the games. Apparantly, the TV companies want to run several back-to back games each match day, but a start at 1 PM ..with all that heat and humidity () is something that even the local teams don't play in. RH has to choose the final 23 ...by 2nd June, but then has two more " friendly" internationals after then before the WC starts..what happens if a key player gets injured in one of those, I wonder...? . Chez Posted 30 April, 2014 Share Posted 30 April, 2014 Is glen Johnson really better than Walker? Walker got made to look like a mug by the Ukraine winger, but he'd of taken Johnson to pieces. I thought Johnson looked woeful against us, albeit at left back and he hasn't ever convinced at the top level for me. He ball watches and his positional play is poor. Prefer Clyne, but happy to start Walker. On the left I am not convinced by Baines either. Not quick enough at the top level for me. I'd start with shaw and have cole as reserve. Actually who cares about cole or Baines as Shaw is the man. After Saturday I think Stones should go straight in. Not seen such a composed centre back in a long time. Jagielka won't be fit and doesn't impress me at all, happily Cahill has improved as we are seriously short in this position. In the middle I'd like to pick Wiltshire, as he is a quality player, but he has had a terrible season and is a liability. I'm not all that sure Henderson is that great. Sturridge and Suerez have made an ok side into a very good one, not Henderson. Tempted to say Cork, but never gonna happen and not totally convinced he would make the step up. He would of course. I will go with Henderson as can't face starting Lampard, who is ok for a ten minute stint at the end but not more. I'd drop Rooney. Prefer Lallana in the hole and Rooney will steal his space. Happy to have him on the bench. Like Wellbeck. He keeps the ball that little bit longer and you need dribblers like him and Lallana at this level, he also plays that wide left winger striker role like Rodriguez does. Sturridge is a no brainer. I actually like how greedy he is. I like his dribbling ability, again you need to keep the ball a little bit longer, and he does that. Hart Walker Stones Cahill Shaw Gerrard Henderson Stirling Lallana Wellbeck Sturridge

richie Posted 1 May, 2014 Share Posted 1 May, 2014 Anyway, there's a squad of 30 named initially. I think Clyne will be in that, and potentially Cork who knows. It's when it drops to 23 it becomes very unlikely. Be interesting to see, think there'll be a surprise or 2. Bet Carroll or Defoe might be in the 30 too, be odd to only have 4 strikers in 30. Isn't it a 23 man squad with 7 on stand by from the outset? Therefore no cull just before they fly of to Brazil.

studentsaint Posted 1 May, 2014 Share Posted 1 May, 2014 Flanaghan will go ahead of Clyne/chambers. I'd personally have 1 rb and if injured smalling or Jones fill in, giving us an extra midfielder. igsey Posted 1 May, 2014 Share Posted 1 May, 2014 Christ how poor is that man?! Is he a homeless man in Botswana's Robben? Robben is an intelligent player with end product, a lot of goals and troubles the best defences in the world. Townsend runs and people and has a few shots, 99% of which don't go in. Am I right in thinking Townsend's 1 goal this season was a cross that accidentally went in? 1 goal for QPR was a penalty? And his assists over the 2 seasons stands at....zero. Who needs to replace Bale when you've got this lad and the invisible Lamela. I think what he was getting at was that he's very one-dimensional - Townsend and Robben both have one trick in their books and not a lot else. Get the ball on the right, run down it a bit, cut inside at about 20 yards and have a pop, the main difference being that Robben can actually shoot consistently. However he's still the most one-footed world class footballer I can remember seeing.
igsey Posted 1 May, 2014 Share Posted 1 May, 2014 And that's what I don't agree this. Robben has played for Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern, won everything and scored goals in the CL and international games. He may cut in a lot but he's far from one dimensional. He works hard, tracks back, comes central, can play through balls, keep possession, cross. The only similarity I see is that they're both left footed. All true, I'm sure, I haven't seen that much of him in recent years apart from his CL escapades with Bayern. Maybe Townsend's as observant as me and thinks that if he shoots a lot then he'll be as good? Either way, it doesn't look like he'll be in this squad, which is good enough for me.
