What the hell is the matter with the Daily Mail ???

I'm sure most of the newspapers pretty much eat out of the hands of the bigger sides, even to the extent of helping them to unsettle their targets in return for an exclusive at some point in the future. I can see Man Utd asking for assistance in unsettling players they've identified in return for exclusive rights next time Rooney has a dump or Liverpool the same the next time Suarez feels hungry on a football pitch. It's the way of the world and, if we do continue to progress as little Ol' Southampton, something we'll have to get used to until we can demonstrate we can fight off the insane bids which come in.

The writer of this piece appears to be adhering to the classic tabloid football transfer reporting principle that if you throw enough sh!t, eventually some of it will stick.

If Adam Lallana goes to Liverpool for £15m this summer, I will eat my own sh!t.

Transfer stories always have been and always will be the same, a boat load of sensationalisation to what will have possibly been a passing comment. I try to take any transfer rumours with a massive pinch of salt be it positive or negative. The written media tends to whore itself out to whomever is passing it titbits however so no surprise we have seen more negative now Cortese isnt using them as a PR spin.

Whilst I very much hope otherwise though Im not ruling out a situation within which we could lose MoPo, Lallana and Shaw. We may have ambition (will see how much soon) but we dont have the sway financial or otherwise of the likes of Liverpool etc

Still, as I suspected, it appears to keep our better players the staff (playing) want to see an intention to match their ambition. If we dont spend to progress I wouldnt blame them for leaving.

They've got nowhere with the Lallana and Shaw to Manyoo story, so they make this piece of sh*t up :

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2615365/Adam-Lallana-lift-Brendan-Rodgers-Saints-star-ready-snub-Man-United-Liverpool-move.html

15m is an utter insult.

I don't know Alpine, I wonder the same daily atm to be honest. They clearly seem to have an axe to grind and ignore any interview or comment with our players dismissing a move. They then print a quoteless story saying that so and so is moving for "x" derogatory amount.

The city should arrange a boycott ;)

In fact if you look at betting odds Liverpool have been favourites to sign Lallana for a fair while now, odds are pretty short as well. Why that is I couldn't say, they must have had some money dobbed on it but it's nothing new. They're CL bound and they're not that strong in his position.

The Times printed an article today written by Oliver Kay suggesting that Lallana would be tempted by a move to Liverpool as they play his style of football with a good nucleus of English players. Does he not have that where he currently plays!!??? Turn back a page and there is Matt Dickinson advocating that Roy Hodgson should take Ashley Cole to Brazil ahead of Luke Shaw. Never mind that the players that Shaw plays against week in week out voted him as the best left back in the Premiership this season! A couple of weeks ago Oliver Kay gave his list of the top 5 achieving managers in the Premiership - not a mention of MOPO (I did send Kay a tweet and he replied saying that MOPO was 6th!!) Surprised that Moyes didn't make the top 5! I expect that dear old Gus would have made the top 5 after their scintillating season if he'd waited a couple of weeks before publishing!

You've got to wonder at some of these journalists and papers. Saints have barely got a mention in The Times all season but now come the end of the season when the transfer speculation starts, the only reporting is on the negative aspect of losing our best players (and possibly our manager to a team 2 places ahead of us!!) to the teams that they drool over week in and week out.

It is strange, that having been through one of the best seasons for a long time, my love of football is fast dwindling. If it carries on at this rate, I am wondering whether I'll even get to the stage of bothering to renew the season ticket. I probably will as my old man likes it to fill his days. The press are, I think, one of the reasons. The arrogance of the bigger clubs, or rather it is just reality, who act as they want and the sycophancy of journalists reinforcing it is very unattractive and very unappealing. They buy into the PL package and tow the line, so that they can collect any scraps that are thrown to them.

I guess that at least we don't (yet) have a club like Newcastle, who seem in absolute meltdown as usual.

In fact Newcastle have taught us all a lesson this season, that being that you need to be careful who you sell because some players are very difficult to replace. In the 20 games in which Cabaye participated they obtained 34 points, in the other 16 so far just 12.

In response to the thread title -

It's poorly written, poorly researched, fuelled solely by fostering fear, hatred and suspicion, racist, sexist, xenophobic, homophobic, contradictory, pseudoscientific, promotes celebrity bullsh1t, ignorance and gets into the mostly empty heads of a vast readership.

STOP READING IT ALPINE.

Tory. You forgot Tory.

Does anyone recall when Strachan was here and the Leeds Managers job was vacant, back then it was still considered a top job in the English footballing World. Strachan had us putting "better" teams out joint on a regular basis and his stock was very high.

Based on him having played for them to the media it was a perfect fit, it was probably in the days of Saintsforever and the thread was a frenzy with just about every member online refreshing by the second then someone posted the Daily Mail morning back page up with the Exclusive: Strachan to be named as Leeds manager tomorrow, opening line: the Leeds board will reveal Gordon Strachan as their new manager during a press conference at midday tomorrow (along those lines).

As you can imagine the place went into meltdown even the server crashed under the weight of refreshing fingers.

As we all know it turned out to be cobblers.........

It's going to be a very very very long summer with all of this clap-trap especially between the end of the season and the World Cup then from when England get knocked out until the 31st August. Best buckle up and stick them all on ignore.

You dont think he will go in the summer? Or Lallana? Pochettino?

I do as a person who likes a flutter the odds are against them staying.

They should revisit stories after say six months and if a journalist writes a certain percentage of stories that are crap they should get the sack. A form of performance related pay.

The only performance a Newspaper is interested in is number of copies sold.

This is true. I don't know why people get so wound up about this...it been all about circulation figures and website hits for a long time now. Performance pay for journalist based on page hits on the rag's website doesn't encourage factual reporting. When there's no news there's no pay so just make up a few nice little headlines and write some **** that flies in the face of what other papers are saying. It's no point repeating what others are writing...add a little competitive spice...was going to ManU, now Liverpool in the driving seat...that should do it. Throw in a few inaccuracies to get the punters slagging you off in the comments columns, arguing with others and there you have it...a nice little bonus in you pay packet.

Dune used to like a flutter. He would start endless threads about his bets in the lounge (or was it TMS?)

Here's a little something for the reporter to mull over.

Saints sold a 17 year old who hadn't even played in the Championship, let alone the Premier League, to Arsenal for a fee reported to be £15m.

What do you think Saints would expect for a proven Premier League player, nominated as Player of the Year and regarded by most as one of the hot properties of 2014?

I remember Peter Schmeichel putting in his book that the top footballers are always having Agents ringing them trying say that they represent xyz club and that they can secure you £xxx K a week.

I'm sure that still goes on and it's quite possibly these wanttobe Agents who feed stories to the journos.

We should do that on here too.

I suggested that, on a Lawro thread. We should ahve a sticky for all of the paper talk, then laugh at them after 6 months when it proves to be crap.

Utter, utter churnalism at it's worst, with just speculative dribble dragged out and then re-reported in all the other media over the next few days so it seems that'if it is in all the papers it must be true'.

Grrrrr.
