Barry Sanchez Posted 29 April, 2014 Posted 29 April, 2014 Unless you can actually play football to a professional standard yourself, the difference between watching Saints on TV and going to a game is like the difference between watching porn and having sex. Being at a game is different to being in the pub/at home of course, your point? It certainly has nothing to do with watching Saints since January has become less exciting as we have nothing to play for, you dont agree, fair enough but you current point has nothing to do with that, maybe you are more easily pleased than me but football and going to it has always been a social day event not solely the game, train, pub, football, train (or stay) pub not just ba cleansed 90 minutes in a souless bowl.
Viking Warrior Posted 29 April, 2014 Posted 29 April, 2014 one of the many positives for me finishing 8th is that it will have hacked of Alpine. because he had us down for being relegated Ha Ha Ha Your not moaning any more , your not moaning any more Oh Yes he is

I don't agree. I acknowledge the same social side of things as yourself there, which is obviously part of the distinction. Your assertion that the team doesn't have anything to play for is a load of balls; many pundits tried the old "on their holidays" schtick a while ago, and have since had to recant. It's just not happening while the England places are still up for grabs. Now it's entirely possible that you don't see 8th in the Premier League as being "anything to play for". We just don't know. You only turned up here after the Saints had already made the Prem. For me though, the combination of atmosphere, tribalism and having my own camera angle will always put a match day experience well ahead of watching it remotely, miles from the game, where no-one else gives a f**k.

Colinjb Posted 29 April, 2014 Posted 29 April, 2014 (edited) What does eight place mean in practice? As a fan it has meant I've had a wonderful season of watching entertaining, competitive football from my club and the position of being able to approach each game with confidence that we can put up a good fight. Even when there has been nothing to play for the games in isolation have still been encouraging to watch and entertaining, the Everton performance on Saturday was one of the best games I've seen all season, determined, physical but still with some genuinely excellent play in all areas. What it means for the future of the club? It can go many ways and are all conjecture. From an individual point of view all I can say is that I have greatly enjoyed the last 8 months. Edited 29 April, 2014 by Colinjb
angelman Posted 29 April, 2014 Posted 29 April, 2014 The above is why we blew off the FA Cup. 8th place is a fine achievement though and good timing to looking at the increase in money. For a PL team joining in the 3rd round, winning it brings in (excluding TV and gate receipts) £3,397,500 for the winner and £900k less for the loser. So finishing 8th brings in about the same as finishing 9th and being losing finalist. Then as losing finalist we would have gone into the Europa League, which brings in more regardless of whether you think it a good competition to be in or not. The prize fund for the Europa League is pretty **** for the hassle (more money & more hassle than the FA Cup), until you reach the final First qualifying round: €120,000 Second qualifying round: €130,000 Third qualifying round: €140,000 Play-off round elimination: €150,000 Base fee for group stage: €1,300,000 Group match victory: €200,000 Group match draw: €100,000 Group winners: €400,000 Group runners-up: €200,000 Round of 32: €200,000 Round of 16: €350,000 Quarter-finals: €450,000 Semi-finals: €1,000,000 Losing finalist: €2,500,000 Winners: €5,000,000
Gemmel Posted 29 April, 2014 Posted 29 April, 2014 What does it mean for us and what sort of season has it been, are two different questions; With regard to the season itself, it has been terrific and one of my favourites ever (I started going in 1977). We have improved our league positioning by more than anyone else in the league (Possibly with the exception of Liverpool - we will see) and on course for our highest ever points tally in the Premier (I know I know). It hasn't just been the results, it's been the performances and the football we have played that has made it so enjoyable (One of my favourite games was the 2 -1 defeat to Everton) and as the media drawl over us - we have done it with young English blood, that will see two maybe three of our players head out to the World cup and two of them in the PFA team of the year. The balancing act between the demand for success, expectation and integrating young, home grown, inexperienced players, should not be under estimated and for that alone MP, has done an incredible job and deserves huge amounts of respect. The FA cup did leave a sour taste, but when you take a step back and look at the two chances that Stevie Wonder would have scored (Rickie, Lallana), then on any other day it would have been soon forgotten. For those that genuinely haven't enjoyed it, I suggest you try a new sport or a different club...... It won't get much better than this one for Saints. As for what it means for us, well that's the down side (Probably) We have shown the rest of the footballing world what we've got and the vultures are circling. Starting at the very top with our manager, (which would seem to be the lynch pin with regard to players staying) he has played some of the most entertaining football in the league, with the youngsters and got results. Outside of the top 5, I doubt there is a club in the country that hasn't called their manager and academy directors into a meeting and asked them "If he can do it why can't you?". He has for ma proved himself the absolute real deal and keeping hold of him will be very difficult. I don't buy into this lets see at the end of the season and in many ways most if not all of us would do the same, he is waiting to see what is offered from others and the likelihood is one of them will make a play for him. Pretty much the same with the players . I once posted on here that if Lallana could effect matches in the Premier league, the same way as he did in League one and the Championship, then you would be looking at a 25 million pound England International .....Me and my big mouth. There is no point in listing all the other players, we know who they are and I'm afraid that there are a lot of delusional people on here that believe loyalty will overcome multi million pound pay days.................... it won't. If Luke Shaw IS offered 100k a week in a 30 million pound deal, both club and player will accept, Lallana probably less (Given his age) but the same thing counts. Replacing two or three players with a wedge of cash in your pocket, isn't overly difficult, replacing a manger and two or three players, is harder but not impossible. However I think we have grown to understand that a significant part of our success in the last few years is how tight, these guys are together. The absolutely play for their manager and teammates. I've never seen a group of players as tight and the worry is of course that goes, the instant the manager or a significant player / s leaves. People also need to look past "billionaire" Katrina. This is a business. The group company she runs is an investment vehicle. Buying and selling companies, shares and investing in business opportunities............. To make money. So far to date (Up until the last accounts anyway) SFC has cost the estate 55 million pounds. We owe 27 million in outstanding transfer fees and have a an unspecified loan to a BVI loan company, that has a charge on everything - including the players. At some point last year she was required to provide an additional 2 million and I suspect (Based on the liquidation of the old company) has recently parted with another four million to Aviva. The reality is that our "stock" is high- Probably as high as it will go, so from a business perspective, it would make perfect sense to cash in on a couple of players, which would also certainly then see the manage go as well. Obviously a lot of that is conjecture, but I think people need a reality check as to what the summer will bring. In many ways this great season, could make us victims of our own success, then of course it might not, but one thing I am convinced of and that is the close season will be a defining period in Saints history..... bad or good.

It's getting to the point where we are disgusted by any report that Lallana is going to Liverpool, Shaw to United etc. The likes of Shaw and Lallana are England internationals, of course bigger clubs will be inteterested. If they played for another team eg. Newcastle, we would all be saying they are too good and will leave, why should it be any different for us?

Because many of our fans live in an absolute fantasy World, they dont want to face that prospect that faces every club on the planet bar two every season (Madrid and Barcelona), our season of great success of bringing on players will have the issues of larger teams coming in and wanting them. Its not rocket science but if you write this obvious opinion you are a troll, its as childish as it is silly.

Some people miss the fact that there are a lot of clubs who are a much more attractive proposition for a player than the mighty 8th placed Southampton fc. You sure you didn't look east when picking a football team? I do feel sorry for you lot stuck between Southampton and Pompey....
cellone Posted 29 April, 2014 Posted 29 April, 2014 Thanks for the reality check Gemmel and Tony. If I didn't get one on an hourly basis I would lose touch with reality. Luckily there's the press, pundits, fans of other clubs and fans of this one all giving reality checks.

Right now, we're talking about the team having nowt to play for. We've got a number of players aiming for international squads (not just the England lot, Fonte too). My latest Barry Sanchez conspiracy theory is that you started out Skate, became a Saint after all the shíte, and now can't escape the self-loathing that comes with being a turncoat, accounting for all the blather here.
Whitey Grandad Posted 29 April, 2014 Posted 29 April, 2014 Gemmel, thanks for taking the time to post all that, you have explained your views clearly.

Whatever keeps you up at night Pap. If Fonte becomes a Portugese international then they must be struggling, Shaw is the only one with something to play for Lallana is there, that does not make it exciting Pap. "Oh I must get down to St Marys as Luke Shaw is playing for his place in the World Cup" Really? Is that it?
pap Posted 29 April, 2014 Posted 29 April, 2014 Whatever keeps you up at night Pap. If Fonte becomes a Portugese international then they must be struggling, Shaw is the only one with something to play for Lallana is there, that does not make it exciting Pap. "Oh I must get down to St Marys as Luke Shaw is playing for his place in the World Cup" Really? Is that it? Nah, it's not that at all. More like:- "I must get down to St. Marys to see the team I support." You wouldn't get it, being deluded and watching games on Sky Sports and all

You wouldn't get it, being deluded and watching games on Sky Sports and all Indeed, and enjoy the really rather excellent football we have been producing. It's a good time to be a Saint, yes, things may change but please; if you cannot enjoy the good things when they are here then really, what is the point of following any club?
Barry Sanchez Posted 29 April, 2014 Posted 29 April, 2014 Nah, it's not that at all. More like:- "I must get down to St. Marys to see the team I support." You wouldn't get it, being deluded and watching games on Sky Sports and all Now I can understand that but we were not discussing that were we? You were saying its still exciting when its not for many, attendances are down are they not? If we were in a relegation battle or going for a European place do you think that would be the case? Cheers Ta.
Barry Sanchez Posted 29 April, 2014 Posted 29 April, 2014 Indeed, and enjoy the really rather excellent football we have been producing. It's a good time to be a Saint, yes, things may change but please; if you cannot enjoy the good things when they are here then really, what is the point of following any club? Who said enjoying Saints is anything to do with supporting them? I love them but enjoyment is something that does not spring to mind. Ask teams in the lower tiers concerning enjoyment, excitement yes but enjoyment? Enjoyment is something for the football elite, am I enjoying being safe? Yes, is it exciting? No.
Colinjb Posted 29 April, 2014 Posted 29 April, 2014 (edited) Who said enjoying Saints is anything to do with supporting them? I love them but enjoyment is something that does not spring to mind. Ask teams in the lower tiers concerning enjoyment, excitement yes but enjoyment? Enjoyment is something for the football elite, am I enjoying being safe? Yes, is it exciting? No. Enjoyment when you score? Win a game? Outperform a more reputable side? See a youngster successfully come through? See a particularly excellent tackle? See your young right back skin a man with 100 England caps? When you see your midfield three dominate and grind down the opposition? When your centre-back puts in yet another imperious performance to stymie the opponents? You really gain that little enjoyment from watching us!? Astonishing! Particularly when we really have had to put up with a great deal that could be truly perceived as un-enjoyable only a short time ago. Edited 29 April, 2014 by Colinjb

I am talking over a passage of time as opposed to a season, I went nearly every home and away for 3 and a bits years in the early 90's and was a season ticket holder through the 90's when it was ****e,did I enjoy it? I enjoyed the days out and the occasional victory and the great escapes but the football? It was ****ing awful. I am indifferent to watching the modern footballer nowadays using us (they are and will do) as a stepping stone on to better things, trust me I wont be bitter when they go just resigned to it,watch the bitterness from the happier ones though. Keep this post.

I haven't been to nearly as many games as I'd like to, and contrary to Barry's implied assertion, I normally miss games due to real life considerations, not because I don't want to go. To me, actually going to a game has always been the zenith of being a football fan, particularly if you get to see any of the things you list above.

I think everyone knows that. Problem is YOU said it and as you know people like to argue with you and then complain that youve ruined the forum The players even knew it - thats why Wanyama/Mopo and co stopped talking about top 4 and started talking about the "exciting" prospect of beating our 2001/2 points total

No. But I will enjoy the good things when they occur and enjoy watching my team even if the better times do not last.
Barry Sanchez Posted 29 April, 2014 Posted 29 April, 2014 Exactly. Saints have been an excellent day out in recent years. You are implying that I believe not going to the game is the same as going, keep trying, your kids are old enough you can go, mine is 7 months old Pap.

By the end of 2014, trolling the pair of you will eclipse anything I have to say on conspiracy theories. Keep up your infantile bollócks, chaps. You make everyone else look good and provide me with a lot of ammunition. More own goals than a team full of Hooivelds.
Barry Sanchez Posted 29 April, 2014 Posted 29 April, 2014 Why do you claim to be a saints fan baz? Because I am a Saints fan, a Southampton fan, the club, City and people.

Ammunition, you would have an argument with the mirror and lose, you pull quotes out of thin air without any back up and get all het up when asked for evidence. Thank the Lord you are not in the police, the state system you so despise would be exactly what you are:lol:

Ask teams in the lower tiers concerning enjoyment, excitement yes but enjoyment? Enjoyment is something for the football elite, am I enjoying being safe? Yes, is it exciting? No. I enjoy it when your multiple contradictions trip you up but then you're not ever claiming to be mastermind material and if you were it would be much the same as claiming you were a Saints fan....way beyond credibility! You don't go to matches, don't accept that enjoying Saints is anything to do with supporting them?! You said your reputation was shot...I disagree...you are the most blatant of skate trolls and your reputation as that is there for all to see, what I don't understand is wtf you get off on coming on to a rival forum and bleating your illiterate contradictions...maybe to get this sort of response but how farking sad must your life be?!! I've supported Saints all my life, I'm down if they lose but it doesn't make my support any less enjoyable! ColinJB (amongst many others) sums up the feelings that a supporter feels - I met him at a pre-season U21 friendly at a non-league ground(100 miles for me, 50 for him...why even Dune was there!!) - you, by your own admission, couldn't get off your sad skate arse to go and see a youth match a few minutes away ffs!! I don't suppose you do wonder why you are reviled on here...I gather your nasty skate bleatings got you kicked off another forum so you do have form - just what the fluck do you get out of it?! Finished now, an Ottery style rant but he's far more of a gent than me - I'll not be apologising - I'm just astounded you still infest a place where you are quite obviously detested!!
