Eight-placed finish - what does this mean for us in practice?

while we picked the wrong time to get relegated re TV money, we haven't half picked the right time to come back!

If in August you'd offered me 8th place, Rickie scoring for England, £82M, two players in the PFA team and 2/3 players on the plane to Brazil, I'd have had your arm off - and had you sectioned.

A very good season.

And we dodged the Europa League, the football equivalent of catching VD every other Thursday.

A splendid summary sir if I may say so :)

Eighth place is about right for this squad and I, for one, am pretty happy with the way things have panned out. The insane amount of money given to clubs now means we have a great chance to improve the squad on put even more pressure on the clubs above us. I have faith in the people currently running the club to make the right decisions re player purchases and remuneration so that we can advance towards the holy grail.

There are no guarantees about anything, but how some people can only see doom and gloom in every action or statement is beyond me.

(OK, death and taxes are pretty much guaranteed!)

Just a mess of a side.

Not sure how Pardew has kept his job really.

 classic SWF

Newcastle are 9th despite having a far weaker side than us......... but Pardew should be sacked and the team is a mess!? :?

We are one place above them but Mopo is the chosen one and we are now the shining light of world football

They should be more worried about next season. It'll take some turning round. Cabaye was excellent, but it's mainly the spirit that's completely gone. Just a mess of a side.

I never got the hype for Remy, he scored a few but over the full season hasn't been that great. No-one else seems a goal threat for them. Does Ashley give a toss? Will he spend anything? Not sure how Pardew has kept his job really.

Who would they get in to do any better than him?

cant be the most attractive role to take on. Obviously they have potential to be a massive club, but whilst Ashley is in charge you are basically tying your arms behind your back.

cant imagne there would be a massive queue of top managers wanting to go in, have little (relatively) to spend, knowing any player that performs will be sold for any decent offer and there is bound to some sort of self-inflicted destabilisation from above.

cant see Ashley paying Pardew off either to be honest, even if it isn't his whole contract that would need paying.

Imo Unless something exceptional happens next season the best we can hope for is to finish above Everton (unless they replace their loan players with quality) out of the teams currently above us so I think 8th is a great finish !

Are you lost? Totally agree with all of that - but you missed Mopo's big fat juicy bonus (apparently), other than that though, spot on.

Now pi ss off back to the PTS you nutjob, we are not used to rational conversion on here.

You're a long way from your normal haunts RB, but yes, putting it like that..:-)

Has GlasgowSaint left the thread? I was wondering if he really lived in Glasgow? Surely there he'd get slapped around the face every Saturday night with a wet haddock for being a tiresome pollock?

Classic Glasgow Saint strawman and hypocrisy.

When Saints were going through a bad patch you gleefully turned the attention towards '4 wins in 13,14,15,16,17 games' which you updated every week and completely disregarded the fact that 1) we had a massively wonky fixture list and 2) we were in 8th/9th position in the league.

Now, with Newcastle you're telling everyone to do precisely the opposite and pay no mind to the fact that they relied on a huge purple patch at the start of the season, have been extremely lucky with late winners against Fulham, Villa and Palace and on form over the past 3-4 months now, look like relegation material.

Which of the teams above us are we really better than? To what extent has Pochettino underachieved?

I'm sure Bazza & Glasgow are one and the same. We've had a great season. We've massively improved on last season , and anyone who thinks otherwise is a ****ing idiot.

Both the same person?

Nah. My money is on them being "pals" off the forum, perhaps occasionally engaging in mutual masturbation over their posts.

"Did ye see that, Bazza? I told them things wouldn't be as good as they think they'll be!"

"No, sorry Glasgee. Was too busy trying to find your prostrate. There's no view from back here, you big mavis".

It has been an enjoyable season and I am pleased with 8th place "best of the rest" title considering the teams above us.

Any progress to move up from there next season will be very difficult, so on the basis we can continue as a top half side I would love for us to give the cup competitions more focus next season and try to add some silverware to our bare cabinet.

I've enjoyed watching Lambert, Rodriguez, Lallana and Shaw make their England debuts and I think that will make us an attractive club to sign for up and coming English players. I think it would work well if saints can use the loan market to bring in a player like Lukaku to plug the gap if Rodriguez is out for a longer period.

Beating Man Utd last game of the season would be nice as well.

Only you use terms like 'chosen one' and 'shining light of world football' - no-one else talks like that. Looking at various threads it looks as if the vast majority of people on here think Pochettino is a good (but not great) manager and that we are a good (but not great) team. Which given we finished 8th seems pretty fair, doesn't it?

Your comparison with Newcastle is a bit facile. You object to people saying here that Newcastle have had a poor season, but they have had a terrible 2014 (lowest scorers in the division and with relegation form), and their fans have started calling for Pardew's head. Versus their own expectations they have done poorly and they look to be going backwards as a team, particularly once they sold Cabaye. Even you can see that we are on a upward trajectory (league 1 3 years ago, championship 2 years ago, 14th in Prem last year and now 8th). You may be right that this is the limit of our ambitions, but to keep attacking that sort of progress is perverse, who else in the top four divisions can show that progress over 3 years?

I am happy with 8th given where we are as a club - I do agree we should target cups more next season, but I think that discussion is long closed.

You're mistaking constructive different opinions with bait designed to get a reaction :)

I think the responses they elicit constitute some form of care in the community so we should be seen as 'doing our bit for the disadvantaged' - I just wouldn't choose to do care in the community in those particular suburbs of P*mpey and wish the tiresome skate trolls would f*ck off back to their own fish-fragranced forums...

Eighth place is an excellent step forward - our football has been breathtaking at times - our stock is high in the football world. Anyone who finds constant negativity amongst that is patently not a Saints fan.

It is a good achievement, but it's probably about where we should be with the players we have. In a way I do find the PL a bit boring, not just sitting in 8th, more the fact that I preferred playing midweek games in League 1 and Championship. That's not to say I would swop that for where we are. Now time to smash through that glass ceiling! (or hit it very hard and come down to earth with a bump)

This!

The premiership has become very predictable - take a look at the "where will we finish" threads from the summer. Saints were widely tipped for an 8/9th finish and Liverpool, Chelsea, Man C were backed for the title. Even the relegation candidates have been very predictable this season.

The only teams to buck the predictable trend are Palace and perhaps for some Liverpool and Everton

Suits me though – even beyond the Premiership things have been easy to predict/bet on this season.

I had Leicester, Wolves, Chesterfield, Luton, Rangers, Dundee and Peterhead all for promotion – easiest £££££ I have won in a while :)

Got a leicester and man city outright double for a big payout. Thought Leicester would be the tricky part! Bit of a sweat on it now

If Everton turn out with the same attitude against Citeh that they did against Saints you can start spending the money already. They have nothing to play for anyway .

This, we cant go any further so as I have said many times this is as good as it gets, its no bad acheivement but actually really getting excited about an upcoming game is something that has not happened since January/February as we have not played for anything other than pride.

That's the thing, recently it's been difficult to feel too down if we lose, but equally to get excited about winning. I'm inclined to agree with you, this could be it. I'd loved to be proved wrong, for us to keep our key players and too invest heavily in new ones, but just can't see it.

You look forward to the games more when you actually go to them.

Everton was ace. Very much looking forward to last day of season too.

No not really, you are sat watching the game in the stadium as opposed to watching in a pub or at home with nothing for Saints to play for, it changes little.

Hmm. Very much the sort of comment I'd expect.

Still, if you want to equate sitting in your house watching BT Sport at 12:45 with screaming for your team at a ground, it's your right. It's only your reputation as "main board poster" that's at stake. Most of us are keenly aware of the difference.

I do sympathise with someone in your position though. St. Marys does have a lot of Southampton supporters in it most days. I know you don't get on with them or believe in the same things they do, such as the team.

Well chuffed with eigth as I predicted 12th in pre-season. More positives than negatives.

Highlights for me:

Pre-season in Spain

Away win at Liverpool

Away draw at OT

Lallana's solo goal against Hull

Osvaldos goal against Citeh

Home performance against Arsenal

Coming of age of Luke Shaw

Performance's & goals of JayRod

Great team performances playing quality football.

Lowlights;

All the losses particularly against Spurs ( really fecking h8 them)

Home draws against Sunderland and West Ham

Exit from the FA Cup

Pap I have been to enough Saints games to know what for me equates to exciting or not, you watching us beat Everton was probably so as your Missus is a Red and we are playing United last game of the season, seen that enough times, only exciting when there is something on it for me, the best Saints game I can remember was 97 Forest away by a long chalk.

My reputation Pap was shot a long time ago and much like my thoughts on games with nothing to play for I dont care a jot.

Unless you can actually play football to a professional standard yourself, the difference between watching Saints on TV and going to a game is like the difference between watching porn and having sex.
