Sir Les Reed

9-3

Recommended Posts

How important is his position at SFC.

He was at Charlton Athletic for years, a real Londoner, then briefly took on manager role for about dozen games, lost most of them 11 or 12 games, fans turned against him and was shifted out. Played major part with FA and England.

Cortese employed him very early on.

Would like to hear comments.

I think Charlton is just one of those things, just like players who will blow your mind on the pitch yet come to management are not very good, seems like he has been good for us Ramirez and Osvaldo aside. Not sure who was first Pardew or Reed, but he mentioned Adkins was on our radar for a while when he came in, and no doubt Pochettino when Nigel was wobbling.

Ralph's comments in the other thread, he is viewed as the right shaped peg in the right shaped hole at the moment.

He is primarily the footballing director and has major influence in all of those areas. He was brought in to give advice towards building up the playing/playing support departments which include training, scouting, medical sides, preperation etc etc

I believe since NC left he has taken over contract negotiations for both players and staff.

Whilst transfers such as Osvaldo have not been majorly successful its hard to argue against the fact that his influence has been majorly beneficial from improving training techniques to academy coaching, match prep etc and generally putting the blocks in place in order to make the team ultimately successful on the pitch.

I for one think its been a good appointment

Reed was Cortese's appointment at the start. Cortese demands only the best out of his team and many others, including 2 Managers have been moved on but Reed stayed and now appears to have been given a vote of confidence from the present regime. He helped oversee our clubs rise from bottom of Div 1 to 8th in the Premier. He may only be behind the scene but he has an important role to play.

Did he have a major role in the England set up? Gerrard hated that much he wrote about him in his book, I am not a fan of Gerrard (still laughing after his slip yesterday) but would take his opinion over Les's anyday.

Very few people on here will have an informed opinion about him because he is so behind the scenes. We definitely need somebody in his role to oversee recruitment, academy, contracts etc and so far as I can tell, he does a good job.

Seems well respected within the game and the club.

Think he takes the pressure of those above as well as doing the legwork for both management and board members - a focal point that is necessary for continuity. He said the other day that he speaks to MP daily and at length - don't really understand the animosity towards a key member of our staff - until I look at who it comes from!:mcinnes:

Pretty much this. No idea what he is like but the available evidence at the moment is that he is doing a good job. Lets see what the summer brings.

Hence me asking what his role is? A man of the darks arts it would appear.

Not for the first time, you make no sense at all. You say that you don't know what Les Reed does at the club, but in the same breath you say he shouldn't be here (or anywhere near any football club, come to that). If you don't know what he does, how are you in any position to comment on how well he does it?

still not good enough for some people though. Apparently he has to justify his role for this achievement to be worthwhile.

"As you know I am member of the board and director of the club and my responsibility is football. Currently I am responsible for transfers, I’m responsible for contract negotiations and all of those board level football matters that the club is involved in."

It's only one poster though Noodles, although I'm surprised his mate from Glasgow/Portsmouth hasn't joined his Fratton buddy on this thread yet because he pollutes every other. Wouldn't surprise it if it was the same poster under different aliases. Wish the mods would grow a pair, BS is on ignore but every other fecker quotes them so I still have to read his/her bitter skate rubbish.

That will be a yes then.

  • 1 year later...

Am i the only one who thinks he is getting away with blame? All the players that have left over the past 14 months and other players wanting to leave. Toby was there to be convinced to stay but didn't. Clyne dragged it out....My point is, Is he too Weak to be a leader? It feels that there isnt a link between the supporter and the players anymore because as soon as we have a player we love,he is sold and a new, cheaper, inexperienced one comes in his place.

I think there is an element of truth here, but is it weakness or complacency ? I dont think he pushed the Toby and Clyne contract too hard tbh, he is probably always thinking he can pull the next rabbit of of his hat.

I wonder if he has a Plan B now that VVD isn't coming now ?

Doubt it

Has no one else noticed that with Katharinas lesser "Ambitions", the Club is slowly going back to what it was...... a CCC Club trying to stay out of the bottom three in the Prem

I fully expect the Deck Of Cards scenario to kick off any minute now

When things are going well he is a football genius who has masterminded a revolutionary system producing player after player from the acadamy for the first team and he has a scouting system that can spot the next big things in world football and get them to Southampton before they are spotted by anyone else, both players and coaches.

When things go badly he is the blunderer who has sold the crown jewels, can't pursuade players to sign contracts and has wasted millions on expensive flops.

Personally I think he's pretty good but not as good as he says he is.

I know we're all upset about the way the season has started, especially after last night, but all the players who have left us in the past couple of years have gone to teams who finished above us in the past 2 seasons. This says more about player's personal ambition and their agents, rather than Les Reed's ineptitude. The top 6 can offer more in wages, media exposure, and more European football, and funnily enough that appeals to teenagers and twenties more than club loyalty alone, particularly if we bought that player ourselves.

Sadly, that is the way it is. New season, new team, good and bad to come.

But we are Saints, the perpetual underdog, embrace it!

Les Reed is in charge of recruiting the replacements though . He has failed miserably so far this transfer period .

It is far too early to make that statement, I'm personally really looking forward to seeing Clasie, and the others are all internationals and will take a little time to settle in before being deemed failures, surely. Irritating as it is, we have to have a bit of patience, but I agree I would have liked to have seen at least two further additions.

So far he has, but there's still time. I've written Les off more times than I've had hot dinners, but he has proved me wrong. I'm doubtful he will now though, club policy seems wrong to me.

Never hidden the fact i am not a Les Reed fan but i have to give him time this season before i pass an opinion on the replacements

I have almost zero time for him. The only credit I will give him is that he appointed Koeman. I would go so far as to say I hate everything else he has done at the club.
