Clyne's tackle on Deuleufeo

I don't know if anyone remembers it as clearly as I do, but Nathaniel Clyne made one of the best sliding tackles I've ever seen today. It was around the 15th-20th minute or so at near-ish the halfway line on the Itchen side of the pitch as Deuleufeo was sprinting with the ball on the counterattack, just about to carry the ball over the halfway line.

Clyne, who started about 10 yards behind him, sprinted after him and made one of the cleanest, most perfect tackles from behind I've ever seen, and not only won the ball, but wrapped his foot right around the ball so that he could claim possession, shouldered Deulefeo off the ball and sprinted straight back down the line and get Saints back on the attack again.

Hope that isn't too much of an elaborate description but hopefully others will know the moment I'm talking about.

Saw it, great tackle but hardly game defining :)

I'm looking to see if he caught hodgson's eye. Earlier in season he commented that he rated him but without a run in the side, he was unlikely to be in WC consideration. Interestingly, since then , saints have given him every opportunity to impress. Best game ever today in a saints shirt

Clyne was outstanding.

My MOM..

Roy Hogdson must have been impressed..

Looking to cover Walker who is injured..not playing and a serious doubt.

Clyne is now more than a possible shout to join Lallana , Lambert and Shaw...

Maybe too late for Jack Cork.....maybe?

But Clyne would be in my selection...good player who can play either full back and great speed to attack to defend and brilliant recovery.

Tackle of the season was Schniderlins on Wellbeck about 80 minutes in at old Trafford.

Agree about the tackle. (even though I have my opinion on Welbecks footballing brain to not put the ball into the open space with his first touch)

Funniest tackle was Big Vic on Wilshere at their place. (cant find a gif or video of it now)

From where I sat..Luke Shaw had a very good defensive game.

Made 3/4 saving tackles...covered well and did hid job as a very good defender in a good back four.

Shaw even improves his forward play each match.

Not just because he is 18 but also a top class footballer who can defend , tackle and has good distribution...

Exactly why top sides are after him....For me ..he was even better than Baines today.

But today Clyne was the best full back on display from both sides.:)

Is that the one when VW sent him in to orbit??

No not really, highly doubt Hodgson will suddenly cap him before the WC. Those three are much more likelier.

Clyne should be in there though, I agree.

but like you said with Cork, both will be overlooked. *sigh*

You're unlikely to see a better tackle than that.

If we can get Clyne's up on Youtube I think there might be some debate here!

His lack of size and height are literally the only things stopping him from being right up there with some of the best right-backs in the world.

You could be right....Roy may even use Jones of Man Utd to cover RB behind Johnson...

But for me CLyne....but as you say...not been in the squads..........but?

Well if you're only going to praise "game-defining" moments then you're invariably only going to dish out excessive praise to the strikers and attacking players and not give anywhere near enough credit to the defenders and players who aren't charged with scoring goals themselves but nevertheless make a massive contribution to the success of the team.

Some might argue he's not even the best right back at saints ;-)

Hodgson will have been impressed and knows how good he is. But he has this odd obsession with Jones and Smalling, both at CB and RB. Both are ok CBs at best right now, but poor RBs. If Walker isn't fit then I'd definitely take Clyne. We'll probably see him take Flanagan though, who has been playing left back and part of a pretty average defence, but its Liverpool so seems likely.

Flanagan?

My word, you are indeed stupid and the true king of the Straw Man. Plank.

You never mentioned Glen Johnson who is probably Woy's preferred option at the moment (Even with his Skate history!) so the chances of Clyne making it are pretty remote IMO !

Troublle is he followed it up with an overhit pass/through ball to Gallagher I think, Howard grabbed it. He thinks everyone else is as quick as he is!!!

Best moment was him skinning Baines for the cross and second goal, love to see speedy overlapping wing play. How about next season play him right midfield in front of Callum.

Lets face it, Roy should just take all the English Saints players Saints plus Hart, Sterling, Gerrard and Sturridge.

Unfortunately we've not developed a decent CB though! (I'd say that's one area where England lack any international class player) Last pure academy CB I remember being raved about was young Ollie Lancashire, although to be fair to him...he's made a decent career for himself at Rochdale.

True that. Promotion party for him yesterday I believe?
