benjii Posted 18 December, 2008 Share Posted 18 December, 2008 These are not inidividual mistakes and there is only a malaise in the mind of some fans - not mine. These are the qualities of players we have. People bang on about our system costing us results. Cobblers. Missing one on ones and being not that good is costing us results. Anyone who bothers watching can see that. I haven't sat through a game this season and thought, if we went 4-4-2 we would be murdering this lot. I have seen us miss chances, fail to beat the first man at a corner (Skacel/Surman and others), fail to clear the ball quickly enough and so on. That, to me, is because, we don't have the playing talent - yet! They are inconsistent and young. If you honestly think all our problems are attributable to missing a few one on ones (and to be honest, we have had plenty of abject performances where we have barely even managed to create a one on one) and have nothing to do with a completely one dimensional and easy-to-play-against system then I have little respect for your footballing knowledge. LMFAO Not inidvidual errors. Not having very good footballers because we have no money. Ever strike you funny that Chelsea, United, Arsenal and Liverpool do quite well becuase they pay people £100 grand a week. Guess what? We don't... Shock, better footballers are better players... Lord above. Does everything have to be spelled out around here?? That said, I've got bags of faith in some of these boys. They will be very good some of 'em. Maybe this season. Maybe next. derry Posted 18 December, 2008 Share Posted 18 December, 2008 It doesn't matter the numbers laid out in any particular formation, if some of the players just wander all over the place. This is what is blunting our ability to attack quickly and defend in depth.

aintforever Posted 18 December, 2008 Share Posted 18 December, 2008 I've nothing against the formation we play but a few times this season it's been crying out for change and Jan has done nothing. We've had a few games where we've looked good in the first half but the opposition defence seem to grow comfortable with how we play and we dont look dangerous in the 2nd. We need to be able to change things.

Give the bloke a break. He's created the most flexible approach we've ever had as a club. Once the players get more experienced we might actually see just how good. I don't recall Beattie coming back and making a saving tackle like Lallana did with two minutes to go against Reading. For pete's sake. We put out 11 players nearly every week who play for their shirts! Do you know how long I've waited to see that - five bloody years!!!!!!!

You are surely joking, I've see about 17 games this season and there was never a game where we looked solid and weren't hanging on, with Davis making vital save after save, especially in the last quarter. I'm sorry but if Mcgoldrick showed half the commitment Beattie did for us he would actually be a good player. Most of the players will get better with experience but the performance at palace was way worse than at Cardiff on opening day. I think we will find it harder in the second half of the season when teams will know exactly what to expect from us. If Jan doesn't figure out how to mix things up a bit we will be in trouble IMO. Palace was shocking. Reading was great. Wednesday was a mixed bag. These are young, inexperienced players. That's life. As for Beattie. I repeat. Short memories. um pahars Posted 18 December, 2008 Share Posted 18 December, 2008 I would say that we've had games where he has changed things and got no credit for it. What games has he changed the formation??? He has swapped players on a like for like basis and kept the same shape(e.g. against Charlton), but he has rarely moved away from his Total Football strategy. In fact, he even said in an interview that he doesn't think his players are able to play another formation, which is a pretty damning indictment on the coach IMHO. We've also had games where he's changed things and got slated for it. Give the bloke a break. What games were those? As for the last bit, the guy is an adult being paid to do a job at a fairly high profile club. Given his record to date (when judged against his play off ambitions) I think he should expect some questioning of his tactics. He's created the most flexible approach we've ever had as a club. LMFAO. Do you write for the OS??? All you needed to add was "attacking and free flowing football", "the Dutch Total Football style" and the "Skill and Steel" tag line. If anything, his insistence on sticking with one strategy, that has failed to produce results, has shown him to be extremely inflexible. I don't recall Beattie coming back and making a saving tackle like Lallana did with two minutes to go against Reading. Then you didn't watch much football back then, because Beattie was one of our best defenders, and under WGS we defended from the front. There were numerous times when Beattie chased back, made tackles and won big challenges and headers in our own box. You're showing yourself up here a bit. For pete's sake. We put out 11 players nearly every week who play for their shirts! Do you know how long I've waited to see that - five bloody years!!!!!!! I quite enjoyed the play off season, didn't you????? I am a fan of a coach who is prepared to come out and face down his critics - to talk to them, engage with them, listen to them and explain his thinking. Do you know what? I actually think we have a coach who wants to build something, to succeed and for a change isn't just thinking about how he can be the next manager of Newcastle. He's earned my respect and I don't give it lightly. It's a shame that people think football is so bloody easy he can simply move a bloke from left wing to centre midfield and then we'll win. As though somehow that would make DMG into Zinidine Zidane... But maybe I judge people not by their results but by their actions. Call me old fashioned. I see the banks got great results for years... Beattie wasn't a prolific goalscorer in his first couple of years with something like six goals in about sixty games, he tended to fall over at the nearest sign of being challenged, it took him his third season to really start playing. But I maintain it's five years since I've seen them all give their all most games. Not since WGS have a team worked as hard for one another as ours are trying now. It's failing sometimes. You and others ascribe this to a 'malaise'. I put it down to age, experience and quality. You think our results would improve through a change in formation. I don't. I think our results would improve dramatically if we got some better strikers in - ideally the ones we already bloody own!! I support JP - have no care for Lowe. You support neither. Is that fair?
