Dr Who? Posted 26 April, 2014 Share Posted 26 April, 2014 (edited) Now this looks like already being the best season we have every had in the premier league. Ok it is level with the amount of wins in 96/97 season, but we lost a lot more and finished with 48 points. The other season 1999/00 we had the below. P 38 W14 D10 L14 F40 A48 GD-8 Pts52 This season P36 W14 D10 L12 F52 A45 GD+7 Pts52 So I think with 2 games less, we have already going to have a better season and our best season, even if we lose them both. One more point and it will be our best in premier league history. I do not think there is any reason why we cannot win the last 2 games. If we do win our last 2 games we would have had our best season since 84/85.... Not bad hey! Just stop and think back 5 years! Also our football is far more superior than anything I have seen us play below. Great season, loved every minute of it! Edited 26 April, 2014 by Dr Who? The Kraken Posted 26 April, 2014 Share Posted 26 April, 2014 Impressive stats and a very impressive season. Hopefully we'll surpass the 52 points, 2 tough games to end with, United especially will be buoyant. It will be very interesting to see what happens in the summer. Rupert Lowe took a huge amount of flak for not pushing on from an 8th place finish. What will we do this time round? Interesting times.

Dr Who? Posted 26 April, 2014 Author Share Posted 26 April, 2014 If we keep the owner, manager and our key players, I really do think we could be back to where we were in the early 80's (without the top 2 finish). But what a season!

I do think this will depend on the owner, manager and players staying.... Let's all hope we kick on, or it could be another rebuilding exercise, which IMO would be a massive shame for us fans! positivepete Posted 26 April, 2014 Share Posted 26 April, 2014 I predicted 55 points at the start of the season getting close now. I have really enjoyed watching the way we play home and away. What a strong season for our second season back in the top flight.

Fan The Flames Posted 28 April, 2014 Share Posted 28 April, 2014 We got 77 points in 84, which is 69 points pro-rata for a 38 game season, so a way to go yet.

This obsession with Premier League is incredible. Nothing changed between 1991/2 and 1992/3 season. The rules of the game were the same, the number of games played were the same. Are we going to soon be striking off league championships before 1992/3?
studentsaint Posted 28 April, 2014 Share Posted 28 April, 2014 The guys making a very valid point that this is our best points tally in a long while. What's the need for pedantic nonsense about pre and post premier league? The team has achieved massive results for 2nd season in the prem.
norwaysaint Posted 28 April, 2014 Share Posted 28 April, 2014 Although it's silly to ignore all history before the premier league, it's also silly to say there's been no change. The premier league era has also seen a massive amount of global commercialism and a huge change in the amount of money being spent. It's far harder now than ever before for a club to get past the super spenders at the top. We massively stepped up our transfer spending the last two years and are horrified at having wasted about 15m on Osvaldo, but the top four barely blink at having a transfer flop of that price. before the PL era, outsiders often found themselves up in contention, Forest, Derby, Wolves, Villa, WBA, West Ham and even Saints were in the mix. Now we'd be shocked to see somebody else in the top three at the end of the season. There's just too much money in the big teams' squads. A points tally we could have got in the eighties would be far harder to come by now. We can't discount the pre-PL era, but it's not a straight comparison either. It's not being pedantic to point out, however brilliant this season is we have achieved better in a lot of our lifetimes. The team of the 80's remains my benchmark and we have fallen short ever since. 69 points would be good for a 5th or 6th place this year, that surley is a realistic ambition for a club of our size in todays Prem. That's 5 more wins, increasing the win ratio by a third, it's an ask but one that shouldn't be beyond us.
angelman Posted 28 April, 2014 Share Posted 28 April, 2014 Sums up what is wrong with football. Best ever PL finish - why? Did football start with the PL? No, of course not, just a new era that is practically a closed shop for those who are able to win it. What actually are we doing - playing for 6th place? Or 7th? If NUFC lose tonight, 8th place is where we will finish for definite barring a 20 odd goal change in GD. About the best that could be expected, as all those above us were expected to be above us. Lord Duckhunter Posted 28 April, 2014 Share Posted 28 April, 2014 What's the matter with some of you? People have always quoted " best since the war", " best this century", so what on earth is wrong with best since PL started. Its a starting point , like freedom of contract or other restart after the war. If Bury win the cup next season and say " first cup win in the modern era" are you miserable sods gonna say " football didn't start in 1905, they've won it twice before". I have no idea how old you are and whether you knew football before PL. Dr Who? Posted 28 April, 2014 Author Share Posted 28 April, 2014 What about 89/90 and 2002/03? I only went back to the premier league formation, well that is 20 years ago, that was enough, but we could still best this. But 2002/03 I did miss as I was looking at games won and I think we had a better season this season with how we have played football. Again another win or draw and this will be beaten on points. Great season though!

FloridaMarlin Posted 28 April, 2014 Share Posted 28 April, 2014 How bad were Newcastle tonight? Their performance at Arsenal puts our season into perspective. Contrast and compare two clubs, their season was apparently dead, with nothing to play for and facing a club chasing a Champions League place. The difference was one club were fully motivated by a good manager who the players clearly love and want to play for. The other rolled over and died. Both clubs shipped out a big name player in January. One was patently missed more than the other. No doubt Saints might have done some things differently and possibly done even better but when you consider Newcastle are viewed as a big club, their season has been poor. Think we are playing better football then then, so this season already wins! Now this is the best premier league season for saints ever..... Just enjoy the summer lads and ladies!
