Wanyama and Cork as a partnership

They were very good. For most games Wanyama and Schneiderlin is still the best pairing for me, but it's good to know that they can play in any combination without much of a drop in performance. Get that kind of depth in other key areas of the pitch and you're laughing.

The three of them are all slightly different and can also play slightly differently depending on their role. I find it impossible to pick any 2 as being 'better' than any other combination and it depends a lot on the opposition and our tactics. You couldn't drop either of them after todays performance, but how can you leave out Morgan? What a problem to have.

Whether we have any combination of Cork/Wanyama/Schneiderlin, the glue that holds them all together is Davis. He truly is the unsung hero of our midfield and were he to be out injured, I bet we would not be as potent a force without him.

I don't agree. Think Davis is superb but think that vic is key. Since he went out team in dec we never recovered and his positional sense and strength protects defence.

Roger and Adrian - It's hard to say, just a feeling I have. Fair enough Roger to point to the incredible early start we had with Wanyama playing and to conclude that our poorer run of results coincided with him being injured, whilst ignoring that we also had Lovren and Boruc out during part of that period too. Last season the Cork/Schneiderlin combination was very good and it seems also that Wanyama/Schneiderlin worked well too earlier this season. Today Wanyama and Cork was effective. But it is easy to overlook the part Davis plays together with those combinations. Frankly, we are blessed to have a midfield as talented as ours.

Fair points. Agree with you and Davis has as many assists as Lallana. Lamberts 11 only bettered by Suarez.

I agree. I've been critical of Wanyama before, not him as a player but his performances. Today he showed some close skill and quicker feet to get away from tight situations where previously he would have lost the ball. Maybe he came back too early before, but he looked sharper today. Fair play Vic.

I knew Cork could play with Vic and he had a great game too.

But we've never found out. Davis was excellent and has many good games, but are we really saying a midfield/attack of

Cork Wanyama Schneiderlin

Lallana Lambert Rodriguez

wouldn't be good?

It wouldn't be great. Davis is the lubricant that links those two lines when Lambert is on the shoulder. I don't think the third holding player would add more (necessary) cover for the back four than Wanyama does already. I can only imagine us putting three all across the back line if we're away at a top team, they're throwing the kitchen sink at us and we're holding on for a really important result. We're an attacking side and we're still figuring out how to keep our foot on the gas with Wanyama in the team - throwing another defensive midfielder in there isn't the answer.

Schneiderlin wants to attack more and has the ability to do that but that doesn't mean we need to play him further forward. Some of the very best central midfielders (Toure, Pirlo, Xavi, Vieira) score or set up goals from a deep starting position. That's what he needs to aspire to. Any player to improve on Davis needs to add creativity and a couple of goals to his passing tempo and awareness.
