ottery st mary Posted 26 April, 2014 Share Posted 26 April, 2014 (edited) Clyne was MOM.....Also selected as Barclays MOM Closely followed by Cork , Davis and superman Victor Wanyama. Whatever is said about all our great players......Wanyama is a star.....wait til he gets super fit again. Shaw , Lambert , Lallana AND Clyne to the world cup......Clyne can play both sides....super fast forwards and defending.. Walker is injured and Clyne is now in with a big shout. MAYBE even Jack Cork. Saints...well done. Poch you are one hell of a coach.....TOTALLY outsmarted Everton/Martinez. COYS:) Edited 26 April, 2014 by ottery st mary
Whitey Grandad Posted 26 April, 2014 Share Posted 26 April, 2014 I think thats a little understandable, especially without Rodriguez and Osvaldo (in terms of why we got another Striker in the first place) and also no good options off the bench. Indeed. It shows the value of keeping a clean sheet.
John Boy Saint Posted 26 April, 2014 Share Posted 26 April, 2014 Don't think you will see many bizarre games where the team winning by 2 goals doesn't score. What was pleasing was we kept our foot on the gas for 90 minutes, some winkles will say that Everton had an off day but when we are on it it's great to see the opposition players bickering with each other. Clyne and Shaw both played well, Jose and Dejan looked very comfortable, Artur looked bored. Big Vic showed why we spent money on him he was so comfortable and able on the ball, liked the way he stuck one on Berkley and the lad scurried back into his hole for the rest of his time on the pitch. Although his best moment for me was in the second half was he was in between 2 Everton players somehow he slipped and was on his bum immediately he was back up rising above the pair of them winning the ball. Cork worked really well with him and as for Steven Davis my MOTM what a shrewd bit of business getting him was the bloke never stops working and allows Adam to do his stuff. Rickie as always showed his experience, if he and young Sam can click that could be a tasty partnership, Sam just needs pitch time, v Arsenal he took to the responsibility of being the strike focus, today he looked a little shy to start with but got better. Mrs JBS watching Rickie and Sam is like watching Father and Son. Nice to see Roy with us yet again today, he must really be accumulating a fair few ticket bonus points. The Kraken Posted 26 April, 2014 Share Posted 26 April, 2014 In a presser earlier in the season. He said that it's impossible for them to play in the same side but wasn't pressed to specify why. Looked good to me today! I think Vic allowed Cork to break forward a bit more today but he isn't that effective in the final third unfortunately. In terms of breaking play and passing through congested areas, he is superb. Really need to get him signed up as well. As ever Diggers, you have proved your intelligence. Forum friends = good. Chap in the Chapel Posted 26 April, 2014 Share Posted 26 April, 2014 Excellent game from both teams. Everton came to play and were one of the tactically sharper teams to visit St Mary's, using one of our own tactics (the cross-field switch ball having drawn the opposition in) quite well to gain space out wide. The problem for them was that they obligingly scored twice for us, and delivered into the box abysmally both from both open play and dead ball. What a difference a year makes for Lukaku. This time last year he absolutely murdered us while playing for West Brom; today he cut a frustrated figure, lacking support and service. That was due in the main to the fact that we defended superbly, a solid show from the back four (especially from my man of the match Nathaniel Clyne) augmented by the twin shields of Cork and Wanyama. Victor was back to his best, and it was noticeable that he kept Barkley at bay in the first half. Every time Barkley got the ball Wanyama was on him, allowing him to go left and right but never forwards. I thought we'd be tough to score against, but we did get some fortune today, possibly some owing to us after the undeserved defeat against Cardiff. These things even themselves out over the course of a season. With eighth place now virtually certain, we can reflect on a year of real progress. I wonder where we'll be in April 2015? SaintRobbie Posted 26 April, 2014 Share Posted 26 April, 2014 Wanyama was MOTM - best performance I've seen from him. Wonderful to watch quality players like Barry in fear of him. Best of all it was great to see he's learnt how to pass the ball !!!!!

Saint Fan CaM Posted 27 April, 2014 Share Posted 27 April, 2014 Excellent game - Davies was just great...best game in a Saints shirt. Wanyama also had his best game IMO. I really never thought I would those two play together, but I think they suit each others games well. Clyne was a perfect choice for RB - he dominated for large parts. Overall Saints bossed Everton and despite the two OG's we deserved the win. Should have had 2-3 pens for handball though.

saintoaks Posted 27 April, 2014 Share Posted 27 April, 2014 In fairness, the Saints were quite outstanding. At their best, they are one of the two or three most charmingly potent teams in the land, and here they were at the peak of their powers. From front to back, their football was an absolute joy; swift, thoughtful, incisive and blessed with impeccable technique. Nice quotes to wake up to from Patrick Collins in the mail this morning... Bearsy Posted 27 April, 2014 Share Posted 27 April, 2014 Not really, most clubs play 1.1.3.1.4 nowadays. At times in the second half it looked more like 1.1.2.1.1.1.1.3 to me tho

derry Posted 27 April, 2014 Share Posted 27 April, 2014 Although we had two own goals, Gallagher was in great positions for both. pap Posted 27 April, 2014 Share Posted 27 April, 2014 Just back from Southampton after going to the game with middle bro yesterday. If I'm honest, wasn't really expecting any points. Everton have long been a troublesome side for us and have been in good form lately. We're missing our top scorer, haven't really set the world on fire in recent weeks. Even worse, I was fairly ambivalent about the result. We don't really need the points, and I know a lot of blue noses that'd love to sneak into the CL. What I actually got was one of the most amusing games I've been to in recent memory. The banter in Itchen North was top quality; we couldn't really have done it without the Evertonian exploits though. "You score two goals, and still don't sing" was my favourite. It'll be a while before that's as funny again. After seeing Jos score an og last year in the Fulham game, very pleased to see a bit of balance restored in the flesh. Actually thought we were much like our normal selves. Good to watch, pressing high up the pitch and the characteristic lack of end product. We really miss Jay's pace and the outlet he provides for some of the over the top/through balls. Despite the lack of bite, side looked hungry and a decent footballing outfit. One, maybe two more magicians in their own fields, a bit more depth and this group of players will blossom into something quite scary. Most of the pieces are there now. kwsaint Posted 27 April, 2014 Share Posted 27 April, 2014 Was Lukaku injured or simply not up for it. He was awesome playing for WBA at SMS last year, although he did make life easy for himself by standing on the right wing to be marked by Danny Fox. Completely invisible yesterday. Having said that, yesterday was one of the most enjoyable days at SMS in a long time. Second half in particular we were just fantastic. Everton didn't play well because they were not allowed to. And hats off to whoever started the 'who needs Rodriguez we've got your back four' chant after the second goal.

From 10 things about the weekend http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2014/apr/28/premier-league-10-things-we-learned-weekend-football Roy Hodgson might as well have a season-ticket at Southampton these days. The England manager was at St Mary's again on Saturday, casting his eye over Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert, plus Everton's Leighton Baines and Ross Barkley, but it was the performance of Nathaniel Clyne that stood out the most. Southampton's right-back has had to battle the exciting Calum Chambers for a starting spot all season but he was excellent against the tricky but frustrating Gerard Deulofeu – diligent, committed, quick, strong in the tackle and always willing to get forward. Right-back is not a position where England are especially strong at the moment – could Clyne be the answer? Jacob Steinberg
