Colinjb Posted 22 April, 2014 Share Posted 22 April, 2014 (edited) I feel increasingly frustrated when we get a corner, mainly thanks to us having consistently offering no threat for a very long time. The last two I can remember from this set pieces are Lovren v Sunderland and Lovren v Liverpool. Either way nothing in recent games, and indeed for the whole of the calendar year. Could this be a function of our continued commitment to possession play? A sacrifice of opportunistic plays and method? It's a worry, every time we get a set piece in an attacking area there is no anticipation anymore. Ward-Prowse looked sharp in his delivery for a while, certainly more then Adam but even now, nothing. It just feels like we are wasting a wonderful avenue of opportunity. Colinjb Posted 22 April, 2014 Author Share Posted 22 April, 2014 (edited) Lallana at Old Trafford Lambert v Fulham Both of which happened before Christmas. We have looked entirely lackluster from set pieces recently. It's just a worry. Coupled with how we can seem one-dimensional with our wing-play. I have no real suggestions just wonder if anyone else shares my concerns. Edited 22 April, 2014 by Colinjb
Kingsland Red Posted 22 April, 2014 Share Posted 22 April, 2014 Set pieces are severely limited these days, with only the Lambert/Ramirez/A N Other shot at goal to test the opposition's pre match team analysis.
teacher Posted 22 April, 2014 Share Posted 22 April, 2014 I would like to see someone drill it into the box rather than float it to the back post. Stoke did it against us and Crouch scored.
marc_saint Posted 22 April, 2014 Share Posted 22 April, 2014 Don't think it's just us that has these issues. I think all defenses are so drilled that ardly any goals are scored from corners these days. It would be interesting to see the percentages of goals scored from corners by all premiership teams and I bet we're not down the bottom.
DuncanRG Posted 22 April, 2014 Share Posted 22 April, 2014 We were very dangerous from corners earlier on in the season, when Ward-Prowse was taking them. He's the first good taker we've had for years, though Fox could ping them in on occasion.
Wrensup Posted 22 April, 2014 Share Posted 22 April, 2014 Against Cardiff I can't remember a single corner actually making it passed the near post.
igsey Posted 22 April, 2014 Share Posted 22 April, 2014 I would like to see someone drill it into the box rather than float it to the back post. Stoke did it against us and Crouch scored. Either would be better than the dithering short corner routines we've been seeing lately.
Deano6 Posted 22 April, 2014 Share Posted 22 April, 2014 V few goals are scored from corners these days. I was reading one of those "stats-y" books on football recently and they had a chart of number of goals scored vs number of corners in a match and the correlation was almost zero (v slightly upward sloping line). As someone above said, it's not just us.
Turkish Posted 22 April, 2014 Share Posted 22 April, 2014 Funny isn't it. Early in the season people were moaning that we didn't score from open play and we only scored from dead balls or penalties, now people are moaning that we dont score from them. You can please some of the people some of the time all of the people some of the time some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”
