Shaw has not been the best left back of the season, not by a way. Not enough end product for an attacking full-back. People (especially media and Saints fans) conflate his potential and ability with his actual performances at the moment, before all that potential has been fulfilled. Baines, Kolarov and probably Azpilicueta ahead of him.

We can still be delighted with him though, it's been another season of incredible progress.

I agree with their team besides that and Sterling (Lallana). Would also consider Jagielka at centre half if we're not considering strength of a partnership.

I honestly wouldn't have either of them in the team. Gary Neville has done a lot of talking off the pitch but I haven't seen anything memorable from him on it, and hasn't Carragher been injured much of this season too?

Haha! Mate, you've made yourself look like a bit of a goon there! Neville has been retired for at least a year or two now!

Agree about Carragher though. He seems to be living off Liverpool's success this season, but the reality is, I think he has probably played in less than half of their games this season.

This is a joke I take it? Carragher retired last season as well.

Definitely less than half.

Definitely less than half.

Exactly my point. Haven't looked in to it for exact stats, but probably less than a handful of substitute appearances at the start of the season by the reckoning. Seems to be focussed far more on his so called media career this season, which I know for a fact has led to a number of Liverpool fans questioning his commitment to the club. Shame really, because he's been very good for them in past seasons.

Sterling has been fantastic this season. A front 4 of him, Lallana, Rooney and Sturridge at the World Cup is quite formidable...

With Gerrard behind them, and even Henderson...though we can't expect to play like Liverpool do so it might be someone else in there.

This England squad is much stronger than the one we took to the Euros.

The squad isn't a problem, but it'll really take something to turn them into a decent team. Seems like ages since I've seen an England team play at all cohesively. Those days of back fours playing together with little change for a few years or strike partnerships that clicked.

I probably always thought that though and remember with rose tinted spectacles. The 1990 team wasn't that settled before the tournament and they did okay.

I think Hodgson was most of the way to getting his team together by the last round of friendlies, and we looked okay. That's been changed with Liverpool's success though, as he'll no doubt want to fit Sterling in and maybe Hendo as well.

If we're talking about strike partnerships, Lambert and Welbeck looked red hot against Moldova...but we can't start with them.

They really did seem to click - Welbeck would be more than welcome at St Marys in my view, but I can't see us affording him.

Shocker as Lambert looks better with someone in front of him to pass to... About 2 years and running, that one. Said the same when we signed Ramirez (no-one to pass to) and was delighted when it appeared Osvaldo would fill that role (and didn't).

My team would be a 4231

Hart

Walker Cahill Jagielka Baines

Henderson(wilshere) gerrard

Sterling Rooney Lallana

Welbeck

As good as Sturridge is he just isnt a team player, I think that realistically Englands best hope will be that we work quite hard and for that matter Id play Welbeck instead of sturridge.

And The9 you've not been alone in your analysis of Ramirez/lambert. Pretty much we play J Rod wide left but he effectively ends up as the furthest forward striker or, in essence, the striker that gets in behind with Lambert tucking in or pulling out wide.

That's a good team, but you'd be mad to leave Sturridge out. He's scoring for fun and Rodgers has turned him into as much a team player as any striker needs to be. Welbeck can be deployed tactically for his workrate without going up front.

Mmhmm. Lambert is only at his best in games where we totally dominate midfield because those players then have the freedom to make runs. Carragher's analysis of United last night made a point about meaningful possession and penetration, showing how Barcelona/Dortmund do it with their high possession and United don't. We normally do, but sometimes we struggle and when we do Lambert becomes totally peripheral.

Agreed with the Lambert bit totally, dont get me wrong he is aclass player but definately is peripheral at times and its highlighted more when we have nobody to get in behind.

In regards to Sturridge, I agree its a big call but I just think the team would perform better without him IMO. Top class and Im his biggest fan but watching him at times he wastes too many chances.

Perhaps thats highlighted to me due to playing with a greedy strike partner on a sat though !!
