Blimey - scores three goals in two games and suddenly he is a "must sign" player! Been fairly useless at Ipswich and Sunderland to be honest, and farmed out on loan most of the time. Did ok for Sheff Wed I suppose but hardly prolific.

calm down tarts..who said 'must sign' ?? if u cant see the possible potential then you are stupid..or do you want Another osvaldo?

I don't think our choices are limited to Connor Wickham or Dani Osvaldo

Ok, you didn't actually literally say "must" sign, but nevertheless you enthusiastically suggested that we should try to sign him. With respect, not seeing Connor Wickham as the next Messi does not make you stupid, it makes you realistic. You sound like you've only just heard of him this week. I think we are better off with the likes of Gallagher.

He's absolutely dreadful, had a few good games recently though.

He obviously isn't absolutely dreadful. He's a 21 year old kid who got a big money move before he was in his twenties and been playing in a team that's been dreadful for the last couple of seasons. He's got a decent record at U21 level and in the championship whilst on loan. If he was our player everyone would be indignant the the was a young lad still learning the game and was now coming good and should be in the England squad as he's five times the player Qndy Carroll is.

Posted

To be fair to the lad, his goal scoring record at Ipswich was superb. I think Sunderland signing him for the price they did put a huge amount of pressure on him and he hasn't really had a look in.

I was listening to the commentary on TalkSport yesterday and Collymore hit the nail on the head - although he's scored 3 goals in a week we need to stay grounded (if it was 8 goals in 8 games then maybe) but he seems a confidence player, if someone was to give him a chance I think he'll do well. Do we need him? No - only maybe for cover for Jrod.

Posted

Not sure he is the style of player we need but he may come good one day, if the price was right and he was considered to be a good fit for us (the whole saints mentality) wouldn't say no.

Though I would rather Redmond as said by others on the thread. Off topic but calum mcmanaman at Wigan has looked decent lately, maybe a tad inconsistent but still young and he is the sort of player I enjoy watching. Similar to Redmond v effective at taking men on, has a respectable cross and a powerful shot.

Just turned 21

Scored 8 in 11 games on loan at Sheff Weds

Only player to score at Chelsea and Man C this season

Agree with the OP. he is a potential star of the future, doubt many of those writing him off have seen him play

Must be Sheff Weds most prolific striker ever then...

He has the attributes to be a top player and is regarded quite well in the game. Not that I think that he should be a target, he would be too much of a gamble and too expensive.

Yes he has been hyped up by two good games, but he isnt that bad either.

2 of those goals against Chelsea and City were tap ins I'd expect a League 2 striker to score.

Got to be there to finish them and finding space in the penalty area against those sort of teams isn't easy. Gary linekar made a career out of scoring taps a league two player could finish, yet he's widely regard as one of the best strikers or his era.

The difference being that players like Linekar, Van Nistelrooy and Andy Cole could do it regularly, whereas Wickham has had a small bump of form lasting 4 days. The 3 month dry spell before that would suggest he isn't that good at getting into the right space at the right time.

He's 21 FFS! Done it at u21 and championship level. He scored 3 in 11 appearances this season for Sunderland, a team who have been bottom 3 for much of the season which isn't bad. Linekar didn't start playing top flight football regularly until he's 23. I'm not saying he'll be as good as linekar but You're prepared to write off a young kid for not doing it regularly before he's out of nappies in football terms.

I find this post odd, given your favourite joke is saying, "he is young and therefore guaranteed to improve" whenever someone talks about young players.

Other than a brief impression of Saganowski in the Championship, his scoring record has been pretty barren.

Not really odd though is it. I also haven't said he's guaranteed to improve. I've said you're writing a 21 year old player off for not doing as well over a long period as Linekar, Cole and Van nistelroy, three of the best strikers of their era playing for top clubs, when he's only played 11 times in the premier league this season in a team that has struggled. Hardly a fair comparison is it.

All mentioned..talented/prospects.

For me......Bamford....but would Chelsea let him go?

Would he want to stay at Derby if promoted?

I still think Sam Gallagher is a star of the future and in our team/squad.:)

I haven't written him off. I just haven't seen anything special that shouts out 'sign him' either.

Fair enough. I think he's got potential and playing confidently in a decent side he could shine. I'd certainly rather spend our money on a player like him than an Osvaldo type.

Just having a little purple patch, but he's not worth spending money on. We have Gallagher who is kind of that type of player anyway, so I can't see the club buying someone as average as Wickham when we have a young kid ready to come up....

Surely Van Wolfswinkel & Hooper must also be ahead of him on our wish list.

So many discussions about how we screwed up by not signing them

Ah yes, two amazing signings by Norwich. Van Wolfswinkel is set to move them to the next level and overtake us, as we are so slow and ponderous. Norwich just get the signings done.

What a player RVW is as well, unreal season. Such a missed opportunity, that 1 goal he's scored could well have been the difference for us.

Another manager would've got a lot more goals from those two than Park the Bus Hughton did. Wolfswinkel for all his lack of goals would be that constant presence in the box that we need for our link up play to have continuity. With the chances we create, aerial and on the floor, I'd expect him to at least have more than 7 goals. All Norwich have done all season is try to get balls to his head.

Missed a sitter today at 3-2.

A shame some on here could not be so generous to our young forwards like Best and McGoldrick who were much younger when put in the deep end with a club in turmoil

Connor Wickham has talent. His recent form doesn't prove anything but there might be something there. Maybe not our style.

Either way I doubt we'll be in the market for a young, unproven Englishman up front. We've got our own boy we'd rather develop, and that's fair.

Is this another one like Callum McManaman' date=' who has one good game in a cup final and should be snapped up immediately. By the way what is that 'star of the future' doing now?[/quote']

Isn't he challenging the the champions league spot with everton?

Posted

Done pretty well again today to be fair. He certainly has played a major part in dragging Sunderland out of the bottom three. 5 goals in a couple of weeks and MoM today. Still not convinced he would be a good buy for us even if they were to let him go tbh.

Posted
He's average. He could be a really good player but think he needs to be at a club where he is playing every week. Sunderland have recently given him that opportunity.

He needs to be in a better team. Sunderland have been awful since he's been there. He's still a kid and playing regularly in a better team would come good.

Thank you, the mong jury on this forum have shot him down on the other thread.

No, that'll be the one we should have been interested in, McCarthy.

Callum McManaman has played 29 times for Wigan and scored 2 goals and 1 assist, not great for a 23 year old winger.

perhaps the mong jury see him as a lump of a forward with little pace, and not fit to tie RL boots. He am play in the PL for years to come but I do not see him as a replacement for Lambert. We need mobility with the style of play we have,
