washsaint Posted 17 April, 2014 Share Posted 17 April, 2014 We are truly blessed to have talents like CHambers et al at our club. Not only are they terrific prospects but they also appear decent lads off the pitch. Full credit to the club and everyone involved in the Academy. Sure seems like none of our young uns are in a rush to move away from Saints. Will certainly be interesting this summer.

igsey Posted 17 April, 2014 Share Posted 17 April, 2014 19 years old, seems like a great guy, and a damn slight better at his job than Walker or Johnson. Surely the Euro 2016 RB slots must be Clyne and Chambers?
CanadaSaint Posted 17 April, 2014 Share Posted 17 April, 2014 It's quite striking when you watch the international games and see our guys alongside some talented kids from other clubs who are already too self-absorbed and petulant for their own good. We must have some amazing but largely anonymous people back there, working away every day at the academy. And I'm hoping that this side of the club is going to be a powerful force in convincing Pochettino that he doesn't really want to go anywhere else. Saint86 Posted 18 April, 2014 Share Posted 18 April, 2014 (edited) This is exactly what I have been saying about saints and what makes us different. We have a quality youth academy with the players brought up the right way.... I mean what is going to turn their eye in marchwood? A few trees? A pony? There hardly going out clubbing like Sterling et al. Brought up in beautiful sleepy surroundings and they get taught to value it, and to fight for and earn it, together! That is the Southampton Way. jawillwill Posted 18 April, 2014 Share Posted 18 April, 2014 "There is also an atmosphere at the club that if you see someone thinking they are bigger than they are, then straight away everyone says ‘stop, you have to keep your feet on the ground, you haven't made it yet'. The players self-police to some extent and the staff look out for things as well." Dani Osvaldo, anyone?
Chewy Posted 18 April, 2014 Share Posted 18 April, 2014 The "feet on the ground" thing is what impresses me most about the academy, and IMHO why so many go on to have a career. They have the right attitude to take advantage of their skills and make the most out of what they have. It's not just about the bales and Walcotts, but also the ben reeves and oscar goberns. Not quite got the skill but making a career for themselves nevertheless. That's probably the aspect that makes me most proud. I get the impression I'd hate to hang out with the majority of premier league footballers, but our academy graduates seem nice, down to earth lads who you could actually spend time with. Whoever is responsible for installing these values in the kids at the academy is doing a wonderful job.

S-Clarke Posted 18 April, 2014 Share Posted 18 April, 2014 I'm glad Chambers is starting to get the recognition, in many ways he has come from no where this season. He's turned into one of the best young full backs in England.
david in sweden Posted 18 April, 2014 Share Posted 18 April, 2014 Didn't know young players still cleaned boots...thought that was a thing of the past[/QUOTE] it is in many clubs, but obviously Saints like to help the lads keep their feet on the ground and doing menial tasks like that is a good way. (Like teenagers keeping their rooms clean). Earlier this season, when Saints first got attention; I heard Alan Shearer ( Football Focus) talking about his " apprentice " time at The Dell and said he used to clean " someone's" boots as one of his chores. It may sound demeaning (to some people), but they learn respect for others and discipline at the same time.

Wish these players would stay for a decent amount of time.
