pezza Posted 13 April, 2014 Posted 13 April, 2014 Anyone fitted a wooden floor in their house and regretted it ? thinking about putting an oak floor down but worried it will look like the school Gym. Any advice
pap Posted 13 April, 2014 Posted 13 April, 2014 No carpet in my house whatsoever. It's a combination of tiling and wood flooring. Brilliant for pets and anyone that suffers from asthma. Ms pap has barely used her inhalers since we've moved. Also very easy to clean and maintain. Only downside on hard floors is if you drop something, it's normally f**ked. Oak would look smart, I reckon.
Goatboy Posted 13 April, 2014 Posted 13 April, 2014 If you drop a cup of coffee on a carpet, the carpet's f****ed! Wood is good.
Ohio Saint Posted 13 April, 2014 Posted 13 April, 2014 Dents and scratches on a wooden floor are character. A stain on a carpet is a stain.
Fowllyd Posted 13 April, 2014 Posted 13 April, 2014 If you live in an older house (Victorian or older), it would be well worth lifting the carpet and having a look at the original boards underneath it. If they're in reasonable shape - not too many replacement pieces, cuts or holes - then have them sanded and given a protective coating. Old floorboards (which would normally be seasoned pine) will take on a really nice colour with age, so you probably wouldn't need to stain them. If you live in a fairly new house, feel free to disregard everything I've just said! I'd still reckon that a wood floor will look good in your house, whatever its age.
Chez Posted 13 April, 2014 Posted 13 April, 2014 I have stripped pine floors downstairs and they look good, but be warned that they don't exactly help keep the house warm. That said, not having carpets ensures your house gets the air it needs. I have carpets upstairs and that minimises the noise.
scotty Posted 13 April, 2014 Posted 13 April, 2014 Dont get parquet tiles. Wood expands across the grain, never along it, so with plank hardwood flooring you only need to allow plenty of expansion gap along the sides. Parquet expands every which way. The hardwood stuff from screwfix is excellent, get the heavy duty solid one, they do a couple of oak types.
cambsaint Posted 13 April, 2014 Posted 13 April, 2014 have got genuine fifties solid oak flooring. looks beautiful and very practical with dogs but cold. would cost a fortune today, but the wood flooring with a thick layer of genuine oak are good. Can thoroughly recommend them especially with dogs.
pezza Posted 14 April, 2014 Author Posted 14 April, 2014 Thanks guys, ordered 28 metres of Oak oiled flooring today hop the wife likes it
manji Posted 27 April, 2014 Posted 27 April, 2014 Just noticed this thread. I am going to replace our battered carpet in the front room. Not sure what to. We have pets ,teenagers, and its covered in Red bull and coffee stains. I have visions of a wooden floor being noisy and difficult to clean ,surely you dont just flick the Dyson over it.. I suppose you can get waterproof hard wearing carpets , but are they expensive ? Any other suggestions ?
Tractor_Saint Posted 27 April, 2014 Posted 27 April, 2014 Ah, might be a bit too late but Karndean flooring is worth a look if you want wood-esk flooring: http://www.karndean.com/en-gb/floors?
skintsaint Posted 27 April, 2014 Posted 27 April, 2014 Wasn't convinced with floorboards before we moved into our house. Always had carpets but our gaff has Jarrah flooring throughout, must say as others have said, easy to clean, look great just a ****er if you drop anything though and gets cold in winter so make sure you have slippers!

I laid 12mm celotex under mine, works a treat - warm and no sponginess. http://www.celotex.co.uk/products/tb4000 Edited 27 April, 2014 by buctootim
