david in sweden Posted 19 April, 2014 Share Posted 19 April, 2014 (edited) Didn't Shearer score a hat-trick against Arsenal on his debut? His HOME debut YES he did. He'd actually come on as sub. in an away game at Chelsea two weeks previously. .....but few people recall that Arsenal side finished 6th in that season (i987-88)..... 24 points behind Liverpool. After which Shearer's career made very slow progress. Following season; 8 starts + 2 subs - no goals ). 1989-90 19 starts +7 subs. 3 goals. 1990-91...34 starts +2 subs. but only 4 goals...not even looking like a regular, let alone future England CF. Only after 13 goals from 41 starts...did he become " interesting to other clubs " and Blackburn paid a record British fee for him. New young talent needs a lot nurturing and patience from the club and the fans. Edited 19 April, 2014 by david in sweden

The problem is that you can give some young players all the time in the world but the (undiscovered) limits of their talent/dedication means that they will always have more of the 'David McGoldrick' about them, rather than being the next 'Alan Shearer' if you know what I mean. Knowing how to spot the difference between those youngsters who are destined to become another 'journeyman pro' and one of those rare talents who are set for greatness is the really difficulty part of course. Those with the required levels of knowledge and insight to do that job successfully get paid a hell of a lot more than I do ... and given the financial consequences they deserve it. The problem today is that sides at the top want constant consistent high-quality performances and can't afford to let the youngsters earn their trade, except in games that have no importance. How right you are. I mean ......why couldn't Chelsea forsee any potential for Sturridge ?.....or Jack Cork..... if it comes to that ? It seems some clubs just run their Academies for good PR and never give their youngsters a real chance. However...as this thread is about Danny Ings.....can anyone see potential in him ...or ? Thinking back 30-odd years, I remember thinking ...how come a chubby, little short-ass like..Steve Moran could score so many goals.....(JOKE. no offence Steve) naturally... it was the players around him ....who had a couple of hundred international caps between them that made the real difference. Agreed, I think we should play safe and call back Micky Channnon, Keegan and Shilton for starters.

Trumush Posted 21 April, 2014 Share Posted 21 April, 2014 A big congratulations to Danny Ings, fellow "mush" Sam Vokes, Alistair Campbell and the rest of the Clarets for clinching promotion today. I'm sure this has also made Jrod feel a whole lot better. Sorry to hi-jack the thread.
