According to a few sources including FTB pro. We are eyeing up Ings from Burnley. I know this has been lurking around for a while but since the loss of Jay Rod a new striker is needed. In my opinion he's a good player. But is he really the sort of level that we need if we want to push on. Tbf to the lad jay took time to bed in and look at him now. ?? Ings has been rather impressive this season !!

Sorry if this has been posted before but opinions people ?

I'm sure the only reason people are "linking" him to us is because he is a saints fan. If he was a Chelsea fan i'm sure we wouldn't have even been linked.

Posted

The only link is the fact he is scoring goals and is from Southampton.

I'm suprised fans still suggest him to be honest. He hasnt completed a full season without getting injured.

Im not even sure that Ings is as good as Jay was when we bought him either. Jay struck me as being more complete and still took time to bed in.

Personally I think if Ings is our only striking purchase this summer then we are in a bit of bother as he is nowhere near the level of player we need to push on. Also the way we play we need a man upfront that can play players in, hold the ball up, harry opposition and get in behind.

Those players are very expensive and IMO Ings is just a hard working finisher.

Wasn't Ings a saints academy boy that we let go for not being good enough? In six seasons I think this is the first time he has scored more than 7 goals in a season. I think I'd rather have Billy Sharp.

He is 21 years old, an England under 21 international and has 20 Championship goals this season. I think you are being very harsh on him.

I suspect he is concentrating on getting Burnley promoted at the moment.

If Burnley get promoted (which seems likey), I would imagine they will offer him a decent new contract.

I don't know much about Ings - but he's only 21 and having an impressive season. Shearer didn't start hitting the net until he was 20 either. Generally I'd rather we signed the best young talent from the Championship than £13m on imported players who don't want to be here or have come for the cash.

Oh because all players that play for Burnley turn out to be as good as Jay Rodriguez, BS!!!!!!!

I doubt that would be our rationale if we signed him.

The scouts know more than we do. If we sign him, we've seen something in him as we did with Jay.

Anyway, he'd cost a lot because Burnley are getting promoted and have no need to sell.

We must be to Burnley what we think of Arsenal !!

Jay Rod, Cork (I know he was only on loan there) and the great Daniel Fox !

Come to think of it they may not have stopped laughing at the 1.8 million we paid for him !!

Need to aim higher if we want Europe, need to get out of this West Brom kind of mind frame

We did aim higher with Ramirez and Osvaldo and look where that got us.

Oh btw, Jay Rod top scorer, get my point!

This is funny only because it shows you up for one of the clueless tits that stopped supporting us in L1 and Champ and came back only when we got promoted. Fox was an instrumental figure in securing promotion, he may not cut it in prem but respect where it's due. It is the resurgence of knobheads like you that give our support a bad name IMO.

Well I was there all through league one and the championship and Fox was barely adequate in the championship frequently caught out of position, his only saving grace being a half decent delivery.............

Been here since 1978 and have missed no more than a dozen home games in the 36 years since no matter what division we have been in. Seen a lot of great players in that time and seen a lot of dross as well. Fox comes in the secind category and dont fkin kid yourself that Fox was a major player in our promotion from the Championship !

Now I know its school holidays but get back to your homework you grade A **** !

Oh and my join date for this forum is Nov 2006 look.....what league were we in then compared with your Jan 2013 when we drew away to Chelsea ;-)

Maybe we should go for Marco Reus (left sided attacker) from Dortmund apparently united are after him and he isn't bothered about champions league football (according to Moyes) so all we need to do is outbid utd..........

Hopefully that will convince Morgan to stay:)

Yep you are right. Young. English. Strong. Intellingent runs. 20 goals in the Championship for a modest budget team. He's never going to be any good.

How much does u suppose he would cost if we were to buy ? 5,6,7 million ?

£10m imo. Rodriguez cost £8m when Burnley couldn't offer PL football or wages. They can now.

Only a year left on his contract... And his dads in netley still I think... Be surprised if he doesn't leave Burnett regardless of promotion..

Well. He's at least as good as Osvaldo he just doesn't have a sexy name....

Seeing as he has never played in a top league you can't say that.

10m on Ings is a massive gamble. Has shown nothing to hint at being worth that.

You have to be careful with Championship goals. There is a reason why Jay Rod is in Eng squads and Jay Bothroyd is playing Thailand, despite the latter scoring a lot of goals in the second tier.

Sharp, Austin, Ings, Vokes all good players that that level but huge step up.

Look at Rhodes. Scores for fun but doesnt even get in the Scotland starting lineup and goal desperate Prem teams have overlooked him for 3 years because they obviously think he is lacking in the all round game needed for the PL.

Would you also pay 10m for Le Fondre? He is more Prem proven than Ings but of course you wouldn't.

Doesn't it all rather depend on what happens with Osvaldo? Juve are more than likely to send him back to us, and then what?

As things stand, we have as strikers

JRod - injured

Lambert - no spring chicken

Gallagher - I'm sure that he will come good, but not setting the world on fire

Osvaldo - can't see him playing for us again

Sharp - can't see him playing for us again, and no idea when he becomes a free agent.

And I'm sure that there are some other youngsters

So it's a pretty dire situation, and Osvaldo has really let us down.

Where are the usual clappers of Wes, Adrian and MLG when you need them to explain our awesome transfer policy and long terms apsirations.

Blackpool vs. Burnley kicks off at 5.15pm, it's on Sky Sports 1 with Ings playing upfront for Burnley. Haven't seen him play since before Christmas, could be interesting. Vokes out injured.

We can also learn from Osvaldo in that regard - success in one league doesn't guarantee it in another.

A distinct lack of quality is what I would say based on that 45.

Word. He's prob the right type of striker if you know what I mean, likes to run in behind, aggresive & determined, but ultimately you know, seems a bit Nugent.

Agreed !

a few (a very few) players take the League by storm as an up-and-coming teenage star. Wayne Rooney was one, so too Trevor Francis (if your memory is long enough)

....but looking at our own goal-scoring legends.....Mick Channon, Alan Shearer and even MLT....made very slow starts to their careers.....and in each case took one to two seasons to even get on the team sheet regularly - let alone score consistantly.

James Beattie was a Blackburn reserve when he joined Saints (aged 20), and it took over two seasons before he started to score goals on " a regular basis ".

How a player develops depends a lot...... on his new club .....his new manager... and how he adapts to the new environment.

There would be a lot of red faces on this site..... if we looked back to see some of the early criticism laid on Jay Rod's first season at SMS, and called him a waste of £7 million.

I haven't seen enough of Danny Ings to make a real judgement, but he looked pretty useful in those games I have watched.
