Saint Matty 76 Posted 26 May, 2014 Share Posted 26 May, 2014 Unproven in the PL..no thanks. Laudrup would be my choice, won't want to come for a shoestring budget though. Horrific limitations set on us if you adopt that approach, would you be happier with someone like Chris Hughton or Malky Mackay then? The best managers are currently abroad and we're not going to keep progressing with somebody like that in charge. Laudrup isn't a bad shout but there must have been a reason the entire Swansea dressing room turned on him the way they did.

Saint Garrett Posted 26 May, 2014 Share Posted 26 May, 2014 Absolute shambles this. Poch will go, a couple of players will follow, we won't be able to bring in the quality which we require, we're going backwards again. The calibre of player we need to push on would have no interest in coming here now the manager and a few players will go due to a lack of ambition. It's such a shame, and I hope those that were delighted when Cortese went know what a huge thing that was. We were always going to be worse off when he left. Add to this, we don't have a kit or even a manufacturer, this summer has already turned into a very horrible one for Saints. The board might do charity bike rides and talk about the community, but it means sweet FA when they can't have any ambition with the team on the pitch, very disappointing

Sour Mash Posted 26 May, 2014 Share Posted 26 May, 2014 Doesnt look like it, does it? Could easily have called them out in public on it once it became clear MP was off there (which was probably a couple of weeks ago). How oftern to clubs "call out others" in public? How exactly would that have been worded? If they were still working on keeping hold of MP, they'd have to be very careful to ensure his position did not become untenable. Matthew Le God Posted 26 May, 2014 Share Posted 26 May, 2014 Who is glad they renewed their ST, then ? Would you consider saving the negativity until you see the calibre of Pochettino's replacement and replacements for any player departures? Will be a long summer if we have endless negative threads and posts from you like we do every year. I'm renewing regardless of manager/players, how about you? Window Cleaner Posted 26 May, 2014 Share Posted 26 May, 2014 So you only want a manager that is proven in the PL? I don't want anyone that's not given basic proofs in a top national league, Dutch football is poor in general. There are managers I'd much rather have, like Laudrup as I said. My short list for what it's worth would be Laudrup,Poyet,Puel in that order.

shurlock Posted 26 May, 2014 Share Posted 26 May, 2014 Ok, let me spell this out very clearly for you - from what we know and are aware of, what more could the board have done to guarantee that MP would turn down Spurs and stay with us? I think some of the blame of MP is over-the-top, and a lot of the criticism of the board is. Various statements about the board doing nothing but rolling over and allowing this to happen - is that not a massive assumption Shurlock? Why are you not going around and pulling people up for that, as you clearly dislike assumptions so much? Of course, it's over top. I made my position clear in post 257 and have largely refrained from the mindless cheerleading and bashing of the board. Have taken amusement from some of RK's sporting analogies and the-anyone-but-Cortese defiance that appears to have clouded judgments while challenging those who have wet themselves over the extent to which the board's public statements (and lack of them) have supposedly made us a sitting duck for the vultures. At most, am slightly on the sceptical side -in part because I think the board lacks the credibility to call the shots (largely through no fault of its own - see my earlier post) and some of the statements of players like Cork and the insights of some of the more informed journos like Blackmore. Otherwise, am trying to keep an open mind and prefer to see what happens.

It will be a nightmare not being at St. Mary's every game like I have been since 2006. It's disappointing that he's going (along with Shaw/Lallana imo) but you support Southampton Football Club, not Pochettino. I do hope he gets a ****e reaction when he returns with his Spurs team. CanadaSaint Posted 26 May, 2014 Share Posted 26 May, 2014 If Mauricio goes to Tottenham then you can only assume it's because our board were unwilling or unable to do what was required to keep him here because I'm convinced that he wouldn't want to go there otherwise. We have had a few players saying what they thought ought to be done, number 1 was signing Pochettino to a new contract come what may cost wise. As for selling players Shaw looks to be gone, do you think Pochettino didn't want him to stay. Schneiderlin is as good as gone, he's openly come out and said he wants to go but isn't going to ask for a move. There again I doubt that Pochettino wanted to get rid of him. Then there are the issues of Cork and Fonte with Cork saying no-one has approached him about a new deal even though he could in theory walk away for free next summer. The key word is "assume", which indicates that neither you nor anyone else outside the inner circle knows what Pochettino was promised - other than that no player would be sold that he wanted to keep. We do know, however, that Katharina could have sold the club at a decent profit and stayed in her much-preferred shadows. Instead, she kept the club, took on a highly public role, attended games, and said she wanted to keep her father's dream alive. I agree with you that some key players appear keen to leave but I'm far from convinced that this would be the case if Pochettino had given at least some indication that he would like to stay and honour his contract. He never has. I thought that Shaw would go because MP would rather have the 30 million for further squad strengthening (beyond the unstated budget), but not the rest. Is he going because they're probably going or are they going becuse they know that he's probably going? When we can figure out which was the chicken and which was the egg, which will be some way down the road, I suspect we'll discover that Pochettino was promised lots of resources but just wanted to go to "a big club". Window Cleaner Posted 26 May, 2014 Share Posted 26 May, 2014 And I still renewed, squire. ah but did you then march from the Bargate to SMS to express your resentment of the powers that were? whelk Posted 26 May, 2014 Share Posted 26 May, 2014 I guess most of the people who renewed their ST are loyal fans not like some of the contemptible idiots on here expecting the world and always wanting someone to blame. I am guessing Alpine doesn't go to games but if he does I pity anyone with a seat near him. We seem to have so many Piers Morgan type fans who like nothing better than wanting scapegoats or hanging out someone while they have a tantrum. If we don't have the funds to keep Pochettino then we certain won't have to attract top quality like Benitez, especially as there will be a lot to pay to Naples as likely as not. 4 posts in 7 years, you'll have the ITK detection brigade out on that one then.
