trousers Posted 20 May, 2014 Share Posted 20 May, 2014 http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/southampton-search-for-new-boss-as-tottenham-close-in-on-mauricio-pochettino-9402206.html Southampton appear resigned to losing head coach Mauricio Pochettino to Tottenham after intermediaries started to make discreet checks on possible replacements. The Argentine is the favourite to become the new boss at White Hart Lane after Tim Sherwood was sacked last week, leaving Daniel Levy looking for his ninth permanent manager in 13 years as Tottenham chairman. Southampton had been hopeful of keeping Pochettino and have prepared a new deal for the 42-year-old, whose contract expires at the end of next season. But Standard Sport understands Saints have started to make contingency plans, in the event Pochettino decides to leave the south coast for north London. It is believed Southampton would like to be kept informed of the plans of Oscar Garcia, the Spanish coach who quit Brighton earlier this month after the team were eliminated by Derby in the semi-finals of the Championship play-offs. Garcia has also been the subject of interest from Sunderland and from his home country, where a number of managerial changes are expected in the close season. It is thought that Dan Petrescu, sacked by Russian club Dynamo Moscow in April, and former Chelsea boss Roberto di Matteo would also be considered by the Southampton board were they to lose Pochettino. Petrescu had a brief spell as a player with Saints in the 2001-02 season and admitted last season that he was desperate to manage in the Premier League. The names mentioned for us are hideous though, feel quite sick!! What really frustrates me more than anything....manager really wanted, lots of players clearly being sounded out by clubs, big bids coming in....yet we didn't achieve anything major with what is likely to be our best team for decades, we just finished 8th, behind Man Utd who had their worst season for yonks. The way we treated the cups will forever **** me off, we'll never be in such a strong position again to tackle the cups. We were clearly good enough if we put out our best side! Scoobysaint Posted 20 May, 2014 Share Posted 20 May, 2014 I fear being called a happy clapper but I remember after Cortese left everybody was spouting off about a firesale, everyone must go. It didn't happen. Again, because some of our players are absolute CL quality they are being touted about. Our manager has had a good first season impressing most knowledgable pundits with his easy on the eye style of football, so he is wanted. I think that MoPo is waiting for assurances that we will not merely be a selling club, that he will be able to bring his own team in for the new training centre and the youth teams, and that he will get a reasonable kitty to spend. If any player goes I think it may be Shaw to Chelsea but no others. I am not in the know in any manner, merely speculating with a more positive slant thant all the **** poor journos out there! Certainly no panic yet!

IMO Kruger donned a saints scarf, made up with ex-players and stocked some books in a charm offensive and then undermined our stance of being determined to keep most of our players. We should have taken a leaf out of Kenwrights book at Everton, if they buy sting the buyer so they don't come back.

Saint Charlie Posted 20 May, 2014 Author Share Posted 20 May, 2014 No ones left or been sold yet Just a matter of time. Regarding the Manager and knowing what to say when, Krueger has been shown to be out of his depth. The Solent interview after the Utd game was utterly terrible. Pochettino may have left anyway at the end of the season, but how the club have handled the whole situation gives me no confidence whatsoever. Once it became clear that MP wasnt going to sign a new contract they should have put the onus onto him. Instead they have gone along with this "comfortable to speak in the summer" rubbish, and basically watched whilst a rival has taken him away. Soft touch. As a result, none of our better players have said they want to stay, nearly all have left the door very much wedged open to offers, and those offers will come. "We won't stand in anyone's way" etc etc. "We have strong community values here at Southampton". Whatever.

SaintPete Posted 20 May, 2014 Share Posted 20 May, 2014 This last sentence of this article in the Guardian is fairly promising: http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/may/20/luke-shaw-gutted-southampton-sack-academy-coached The dismissals of Dodd and Williams are unrelated to the future of the manager, Mauricio Pochettino, who is a target for Tottenham Hotspur. Pochettino has one year to run on his Southampton contract and he is open to considering any official approach from Tottenham. But Southampton are working to convince him that their ambitions match his own and there is a confidence at the club that he will stay.
Olallana Posted 20 May, 2014 Share Posted 20 May, 2014 I´m doubtful but willing to give the new board the benefit of a doubt....obviously you cant compare with the old board cause in that case we have seen the actions and this one hasn´t really had the chance yet. But there has been some naive comments and they should´ve known that those would be picked up by the media.....those comments have put me in the doubt mode as of now. I guess we´ll know more in a month or two. For me a likely scenario is that Spurs actually will go for some other manager leaving MP without a better choice than to remain here.
