Roy Hodgson has praised the faith shown in young English players by managers such as Roberto Martinez and Mauricio Pochettino – and said the pair are benefiting from their decisions.

He took the opportunity to praise the managers of clubs such as Everton and Southampton, who have backed young players and reaped the benefits as a result.

Hodgson said: “One thing that has helped me with regards to younger players are people like Roberto Martinez being quite prepared to leave out Leon Osman – who is a terrific fella, an exceptional player and a wonderful club servant – for young Ross Barkley – that’s a very strong decision.

“And the same goes for Mauricio Pochettino – who has given chances to players like James Ward-Prowse, Calum Chambers and Luke Shaw – that shows a certain bravery and it has definitely been rewarded.”

Always good to see. I think we're creating a generation of very mature players which may become England's true golden (and sober) generation. Before we had good prospects quickly taken off rails by media, socialite living etc...I think that's why the national team never benefitted from legendary club players (and we've had a few in the last decade or so).

Just a shame that in many cases, these young players are given a chance often at the expense of other English players. Apart from the Barkley-Osman case, here we have Chambers being given a chance...at the expense of Clyne.

Hodgson deserves credit for picking them.

I agree with Melmacian about the quality of the players we've had in the England squad, and their motivations once they get there. Hopefully the mould has now been broken and the national team will be built on quality and desire, instead of the back pages. Having said that, can't help feeling that the media have helped us in this respect this time out.

One thing about Roy (apparently) is that he likes to get involved with all aspects of the England side, from St. George's to the development squads and upwards. He is more of a complete manager, rather than the flash foreigners of recent times who were only interested in the 1st team.
