Saint86 Posted 7 April, 2014 Share Posted 7 April, 2014 First and foremost, utterly devastated for Jay. One of my favourite saints players and I am gutted that I will have to wait 9months to see him playing again and won't be able to watch him in Brazil. It is horrendous for him and his family. Some serious picking up required there, to get this injury right before a world cup is probably one of the worst things that could happen to a player coming into his prime. That said, saints have just picked up a chance card and been dealt a serious problem with the removal of all pace from our attack. Kid wise, who do we have that can stick in in that role? Omar Rowe, Isgrove, Sinclair? I suspect we will be seeing some first team game time from some of them this season, especially since I suspect the development squad are all but finished. We have Mayuka coming back in from loan, do we think he can do a job? It seems unlikely judging by reports from abroad, but he will likely get a shot now. Failing that, the wheels seem to be falling of Burnley's bus with both Vokes and Ings out injured. That could stuff them up for promotion now and if that happens (well regardless really) we should move for Ings inho. Failing that, other players we might stand a chance of getting in our wellbeck (?) and zaha from united? that I kind of like the look of, although secretley I have coveted Bolasie for a long while. Then there are the players we were linked for abroad, nangollan, lens etc. We are going to have to move for someone. By the time Jayrod is back and firing well it will be towards the end of next season. In all honestly, I can't see Lambert commanding a starting berth beyond next year so that means we can move a wide forward/striker with the knowledge that either that player or jay will be the future head of attack, rather than a full stop replacement for Jay (I could not bare for us to replace him and the lad never recover or get his spot back! - MoPo is key for this imho.) Anyway, I know this thread is early, but will definitely be had at some point. All the best for Jay, I'd rather he takes as long as is needed to get back proper, he is a terrific talent, and will be a real miss for England. For those that don't think he was going, wind back the video of the injury and just look at Hodgson's face - Jayrod was on that plane for sure. Saint86 Posted 8 April, 2014 Author Share Posted 8 April, 2014 How is a thread starting with, "First and foremost, utterly devastated for Jay. One of my favourite saints players and I am gutted that I will have to wait 9months to see him playing again and won't be able to watch him in Brazil" disrespectful? He is out for a long time before he reaches anything resembling full fitness, he will have to learn to walk again if it is anything like theo's ACL injury.... So yes, it may be a sensitive issue, but behind it there are some mitigating points. Firstly, he is injured in the off season, so he whilst he may miss out on the world cup, it actually limits the playing time he will miss. - No consolation to Jay I'm sure. As i stated above, when Jay actually makes it back to full swing, there is a high chance it will be at the tale end of next season, and that will likely be Lambert's last season as a regular first teamer. Therefore whoever we get in now needs to be able to play in both Jayrod's and Lambert's position to be honest. Has it occurred to anyone that we may see Osvaldo in the red and white again next season due to this? God forbid. The fact is, Jay's injury poses us a massive deficit of pace and quality in attack. We sold puncheon, ramirez isn't a wide man, lallana is wasted out wide really... Isgrove may now get a chance (more likely not) and if not then I have thought for a few seasons that Rowe is the boy. And if we do look to getting a player in, maybe as a loan, maybe as a signing for the future, then we could do a lot worse than players like Ings, zaha, bolasie or at a stretch wellbeck etc. There is no point moping over JayRod's injury, it could potentially be career ending if he never fully recovers... Which would be really sickening, but the club will need to act this summer for sure. This discussion will be had many times over the summer, so may as well start it now... Manuel Posted 8 April, 2014 Share Posted 8 April, 2014 As has been suggested, the Osvaldo catastrophe will no doubt end up having a big impact on how much we can spend on a replacement. Whitey Grandad Posted 8 April, 2014 Share Posted 8 April, 2014 I don't think they'll want to limit Gallaghers involvement by signing loads of strikers. JRod doesn't just play up front though so it's not that simple. We need another wide forward/striker. Depends who is available but I think 1 signing is enough, no point throwing money all over the place and getting in debt. Just need to make sure that striker works out, Ramirez and Lallana are being utilised, and hopefully JRod will be back by September/October. He might be back in training by then but that will probably be a third of the way through the season.
Toon Saint Posted 8 April, 2014 Share Posted 8 April, 2014 Mayuka has 3 goals in 15 games for a poor side in the French league. No way does he have a future with us. Lloyd Isgrove - despite some half-decent performances in the Carling Cup and excellent pace - hasn't featured a lot for Posh in League 1. He's hardly knocking down any doors and expect him to be released in the summer. In terms of in-house options, Omar Rowe looks the best bet to supply some pace to our front-line given his performances for the U-21's. Not too sure about the progress of Jake Sinclair, though perhaps someone more in the know can enlighten me? Carlos Vela would be my 'dream' purchase to fill the J-Rod void - though imagine he wouldn't come cheap. That said, I'd be more than happy for us to go in for Ings. Young, talented, with massive scope for improvement, and a Saints fan to boot. His value will undoubtedly rocket if Burnley go up though, and the guarantee of regular PL football would probably mean him committing to Burnley for at least the season. Would be a hard deal to push through IMO.

It took him a few matches to get going this season but his recent goal tally has been 15 goals in the last 27 League matches.....a really good average, and hard to repeat. we'd all like to see him back ASAP, but we can't go two months into a new season without a top class frontline striker, (and please don't let anyone start claiming Sam.G can't do the job.) Sam's a great prospect ....but surely no-one can see him taking up that role so soon in his career. pangy Posted 8 April, 2014 Share Posted 8 April, 2014 After the Osvaldo saga and the way Mayuka didn't work out for us I would like to think we would go for someone prem proven or one of the top championship strikers. Remy would be my first choice but QPR are going to want serious ££ I would imagine £15 mill ish ?Lukaku will be wanted by most teams in the prem but I have a feeling he could go for £25mill plus,if Everton get 4th maybe they will try to buy him,However I reckon Chelsea won't sell them to a rival so I would imagine he will go abroad. Ings or Rhodes as a outside bet ??
itchen_dan Posted 8 April, 2014 Share Posted 8 April, 2014 Whether Jay was injured or not I would've gone for Borini this summer, however due to recent events this would now be the perfect signing i feel. Pacy, extremely versatile (left, right, middle) and can score a few. Would've been my Lambert competition but could come in and play Jay's role with absolute ease and probably chip in with 10 goals playing in our creative, attacking side. Definitely the sort of player that is at his best when playing around other good players so he doesn't feel the pressure of having to do it all by himself. saint1977 Posted 9 April, 2014 Share Posted 9 April, 2014 Borini is a good shout and no chance of Sunderland snapping him up if they go down nor Liverpool giving him a chance with CL football next year. I'd like to also highlight Troy Deeney, scored his 21st goal of the season last night in a Watford side suffering a playoff hangover. Has a mix of pace and power and works very hard, would suit MP's pressing game. He's 25 so one for the present but young enough to step up, we could probably get him for what we paid Burnley for Jay. More athletic than Jordan Rhodes. Ings will stay at Burnley, they are almost up now. Didn't recover from an ACL injury? Doesn't seem to have lost any pace. For our other new striker, it makes sense to use the loan system for a season as Everton have with Lukaku. Means we won't be saddled with extra wages/signing on fees and can bring Jay back later this year gradually and not rush. Also means we can give Sam Gallagher the right level of involvement and not spoil his development, with his frame he might pick up a few niggles in his late teens and early 20s as he finishes growing and fills out. doc oli Posted 9 April, 2014 Share Posted 9 April, 2014 Have never been a fan of loan players, they're never really 'ours' and more widely they don't seem to be a success any way (apart from Lukaku at Everton). But I would take a punt on Zaha seeing as Cardiff are doomed; and if he's not setting the world alight when J-Rod is back bigger and stronger we can just hand him back to United to help them stave of relegation next season.
